‎ROOSEVELT, ELEANOR‎

‎Personal Badges for the 1960 Democratic National Convention; with Typed Letter Signed‎

‎Los Angeles: np 1960. FIRST EDITION. Fine. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT'S OFFICIAL CONVENTION BADGES FOR THE 1960 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION. With a signed letter from Roosevelt to her good friend Mayris Chaney concerning her arrival at the convention. TWO BADGES: Decorative medals held with red-white-and-blue ribbon the first reading "Mrs. F.D. Roosevelt / Former First Lady" on two metal bars between beautiful engraved patriotic designs at the top and bottom surrounding the text "United States of America" and "1960 Democratic National Convention Los Angeles"; the second badge again with the beautiful patriotic emblems reads "Honored Guest". The medals include the original box.

On July 10 1960 the day before the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles Eleanor Roosevelt refused to ride in a limousine to a reception preferring to walk half a mile with reporters. The absence of former President Harry Truman underscored the Democrats' break with the past and cast a warm light on former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who attended the convention to support the faltering and ultimately doomed Presidential Campaign of Adlai Stevenson. In speaking for Stevenson Roosevelt questioned whether Kennedy's Catholic faith might cost him votes and said he didn't have the support of African Americans. Instead she backed a Stevenson-Kennedy political ticket. This trip in 1960 proved to be the final Political Convention which she attended. After the election Roosevelt chaired the John F. Kennedy administration's ground-breaking Committee which helped start Second-wave Feminism the "Presidential Commission on the Status of Women." In 1999 she was ranked in the top ten of Gallup's List of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th Century.

Her letter to Mayris Chaney included in this collection is typed on Roosevelt's personal New York City letterhead and reads in full:

June 24 1960
Dearest Tiny:

I have had another change in plans and will arrive the night of July 10th getting in at 7:30 p.m. but you need not meet me as Frankie is having a car and driver at my disposal.

Let's hope this is the last change! Anyhow it means I will be able to come to you sooner than I expected and this is a joy.
With much love
Devotedly
signed E.R.

handwritten Frankie is meeting me & - if avail we can come for you later after dinner.

Mayris Chaney Mrs. Hershey Martin was a renowned dancer who worked with Roosevelt in the Office of Civilian Defense and one of her closet friends for almost twenty years. Their friendship began in the early thirties after Roosevelt's bodyguard Earl Miller introduced his charge to Chaney and her dance partner Eddie Fox. Roosevelt felt so at ease with Martin that she quickly nicknamed her "Tiny" included her in the close circle of friends with whom she could relax in private at Val-Kill and the White House in their homes and on vacation and served as Godmother to Martin's daughter Anna Eleanor named after Eleanor Roosevelt. The letter includes the original mailing envelope.

A rich warm-toned image of Roosevelt sitting in profile looking magisterial. Beneath the image on the original matte Roosevelt has presented the photo to Charlotte Ann Lucas Crumpacker “Mrs. Edgar D. Crumpackerâ€. The Crumpacker’s were very active politically – Edgar Crumpacker served eight terms in Congress 1897 - 1913 as a Republican representative from Indiana and notably was part of Roosevelt’s 1905 inaugural committee. He is best known for introducing and championing the Crumpacker Bill – an attempt to fight the widespread suppression of the African American vote in the southern states. The bill unfortunately did not pass. Poindexter with the regards of his friend Franklin D. Roosevelt 1934". The recipient 1869-1951 was the eighth Governor of Hawaii appointed by Roosevelt in January 1934 and serving until August 1942. Poindexter welcomed Roosevelt to Hawaii in July 1934 when he was the first sitting president to visit the territory. Poindexter's administration saw the introduction of new welfare provision and labour laws in the mould of Roosevelt's New Deal. He was a firm advocate of Hawaiian statehood and held a plebiscite in 1940 in which the change was backed by two thirds of the electorate an important step on the winding path to statehood in 1959. Poindexter led the response to the attack on Pearl Harbor and controversially placed Hawaii under martial law. ‎ROOSEVELT, Franklin D.‎

‎Photograph inscribed to his personal secretary Grace Tully.‎

‎Likely Hyde Park before 1940. A relaxed Roosevelt presented to his long-term secretary Inscribed to Grace Tully: "For Grace from Franklin D. Roosevelt arrow in Roosevelt's hand to someone taking notes not you!". Tully along with Marguerite LeHand was Roosevelt's principal secretary during his years as president. The photograph shows a relaxed and jovial FDR taken sometime during his second term and likely at his Hyde Park residence in the Hudson Valley. The condition of his legs is clearly discernible beneath the trousers - an aspect of his condition he normally took pains to conceal. Just as visible is the mole over FDR's left eye which he had removed in 1940 and which some biographers speculate might have been a melanoma. The use of female secretaries broke with tradition with all prior presidential secretaries men. But LeHand's connection with FDR went back to 1920 before his polio attack and she was a consistent and loyal companion through the gruelling early years of his recovery. Tully's tenure dated from his 1928 campaign for governor of New York. When he won the presidency in 1932 Roosevelt had no hesitation about bringing these two loyal trusted and discreet assistants - both Irish Catholics from humble working-class origins - into his inner circle at the White House. Tully "occupied a front row seat at momentous events as secretary and friend to the man she called 'the Boss'. To her he had dictated letters to kings and to generals manuscripts for his radio fireside chats and such historical speeches as the one he delivered to Congress on Dec. 8 1941 asking for a declaration of war against Japan" New York Times obituary 16 June 1984. Tully recorded in her memoir "Franklin Delano Roosevelt was my boss for nearly seventeen years. In that span of time - final years for him - I watched him emerge from the twilight zone of poliomyelitis convalescence to move from one political stage to another one until he reached the summit of authority as President of the United States. I watched him pull the country out of our great depression and I watched him lead us to the threshold of victory in our greatest war. I long ago knew that it was my good fortune to work for a man of straightforward simplicity courage passion and honest - one of the great souls of history" Tully pp. 1-2. 249 x 202 mm mounted framed and glazed. ‎Photograph inscribed to his personal secretary Grace Tully further inscribed by Cardinal Mundelein.‎

‎c.1930s. Presented to his long-term secretary Inscribed by Roosevelt to Grace Tully "To Grace from FDR". The photograph shows Roosevelt talking cheerfully with Cardinal George Mundelein Archbishop of Chicago from 1915 until his death. Mundelein has additionally inscribed the photograph "To Miss Grace Tully with best Christmas wishes and my blessing for herself and those close to her. George Cardinal Mundelein". Grace Tully along with Marguerite LeHand was Roosevelt's principal secretary during his years as president. The use of female secretaries broke with tradition with all prior presidential secretaries men. But LeHand's connection with FDR went back to 1920 before his polio attack and she was a consistent and loyal companion through the gruelling early years of his recovery. When he won the presidency in 1932 Roosevelt had no hesitation about bringing these two loyal trusted and discreet assistants - both Irish Catholics from humble working-class origins - into his inner circle at the White House. Mundelein was a major supporter of Roosevelt within the Catholic hierarchy a constituency Roosevelt took pains to cultivate. "Mundelein's pro-Roosevelt speeches and activities certified for Catholic voters that Roosevelt was a safe noncommunist political leader. In return for Mundelein's support Roosevelt had put the unofficial American seal of approval on Catholicism. The alliance established by Mundelein marked an important watershed in the history of American Catholicism" Klejment and Roberts p. 70. Tully was Catholic and had previously worked as secretary to Patrick Hayes bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Tully "occupied a front row seat at momentous events as secretary and friend to the man she called 'the Boss'. That copy is at the Murray Green Library at Roosevelt University Chicago and the recipient of that copy is Jane Addams. TR’s extensive changes additions deletions and marginal notes provide the insight to his thought processes regarding this issue. It is a truly Progressive speech admonishing the Court and insisting that the Nation has the responsibility and moral duty to protect the worker against loss from injury during employment in either the private or the public sector.
