Roosevelt, Kermit ; [SIGNED]
THE HAPPY HUNTING-GROUNDS SIGNED
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. Very Good. 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. Autograph; x 182 pages; Brown cloth boards with beige title and beige and orange design at front board with silohuette of two hunters standing over a water buffalo trophy. Three leaves have 1/8 inch chip at top margin. Frontispiece and 15 additional black and white photographs taken by the author. Kermit Roosevelt's signature on ffep; SIGNED on the ffep book actually signed NOT one of the tipped in labels. Provenance: Purchased from Roosevelt family members from of a group of books belonging to Kermit and Belle Roosevelt. A few passages underlined in pencil including: "My father explained to me that this trip to Africa was a holiday that he was allowing himself at fifty after a very busy life -- that if I went I would have to make up my mind that my holiday was coming at the beginning of my life and be prepared to work doubly hard to justify both him and myself for having taken it." Illegible to me pencil note on rear board. In this collection of essays Roosevelt recounts his travels around the globe on various hunting trips with his father and siblings. The title essay is Kermit's reminiscence of his father Theodore Roosevelt. The other five essays include three that had been previously published in magazines. Written in the spirit of his father Theodore Roosevelt's wilderness books The Happy Hunting Grounds is a collection of hunting stories some of which recount the expeditions Kermit took with his father. Theodore once said of his son "It is rare for a boy with his refined tastes and his genuine appreciation of literature -- and of so much else -- to be also an exceptionally bold and hardy sportsman." Kermit Roosevelt 1889 1943 was a son of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. He was an explorer a graduate of Harvard University a soldier serving in two world wars with both the British and U.S. Armies a businessman and a writer. Kermit Roosevelt accompanied Theodore Roosevelt on expeditions to Africa and the Amazon. Theodore Roosevelt's book Through the Brazilian Wilderness recounted the father-and-son expedition into the Amazon Basin Brazilian jungle in 191314. ROOSEVELT, Franklin D
THE HAPPY WARRIOR. ALFRED E. SMITH. A Study of a Public Servant
Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin Company 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper with edgewear and a closed split along the spine crease. Cloth in dustwrapper. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the future President on the front endpaper: "Inscribed for Garrett A Roach/with all good wishes from/Franklin D. Roosevelt/October 31 1928." Below his inscription his son Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. has also INSCRIBED and SIGNED the book "To Albert A. Roach/With best wishes/Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr." with the date "1-29-49" below in another hand. In his foreword Roosevelt states: "It is difficult in the tumult of a political campaign to set forth facts without bias but I have tried in the first part of this little book to analyze fairly some of the causes that make Alfred E. Smith one of the most interesting Americans of this generation. In no way is this written as a partisan plea. The excuse lies in the deluge of letters coming to me from men and women in every circumstance of life and from every part of the United States asking every conceivable kind of question about him." Alas Smith lost to Herbert Hoover in a landslide a few months later and the following year the longest and deepest downturn in the history of the United States and the modern industrial economy occurred: The Great Depression.

Houghton Mifflin Company hardcover
