‎San Francisco Shanghai / Macao / Hong Kong: The Trans-Pacific Chinese Junk Expedition Inc 1939. Letters are dated: Nov 20 1938; Jan 18th 1939; Jan 27th 1939; and Feb 16th 1939. Though typewritten and mimeographed all four are personally signed by Halliburton. Letters typewritten to buff paper envelopes with blue seal of the "Sea Dragon" with illustration printed to front. Modest wear to paper some light age-toning and rubbing to papers. Envelopes rubbed and worn. Withal a VG lot. Pages within the letters: 5 3 4 3 Total of 16 typewritten pages. Two black and white Kodak photographs are included printed in 1957 presumably from a negative of Robert Pullen's famous shots of the "Sea Dragon" taken just before its doomed maiden voyage. Letters: 14" x 8-1/2". Photographs:.

Who took the first aerial picture of Mount Everest after receiving express permission by stunning the Majarajah of Nepal with bi-plane aerobatics Richard Halliburton was a legendary American travel writer and adventurer. Reading stories of his feats and antics seem surreal - after all who flies an airplane upside down over the Taj Mahal Halliburton was born in January of 1900 in Brownsville Tennessee. Deciding at an early age not to settle down and grow old with a wife and family as the rest of his family and friends seemed to be doing. After graduating from Princeton Halliburton traveled on as many adventures as possible and published his first novel The Royal Road to Romance in 1925 at the tender age of 25. His first novel became a bestseller and was followed by more published adventures in 1927 and 1929. He enjoyed fame and adventures for a little over a decade before deciding in 1938 that his next grand feat would be to cross the Pacific ocean from Hong Kong to the San Francisco International Exposition in a Chinese Junk ship made expressly for his purposes. It is on this voyage that Halliburton and the entire crew of the Junk the "Sea Dragon" were lost at sea having gotten caught in a typhoon. In 1945 a 150-foot ship outline with Chinese lettering washed ashore in California this thought to possibly be some of the wreckage of the "Sea Dragon." Letter I: Halliburton describes the arrival in China and purpose of the expedition as well as his interest in junks stemming from a 1 ft. scale model he sailed as a child. He explains that he chose to use a junk for his journey because of their stability and notes that it is possible it will not be the smoothest ride. He quips: "If the junk should be small the storms violent and the voyage long - all the better. For if there is no hazard no battle where is the sport" He introduces the "friends" of the expedition to his crew of Captain John Welch Henry von Fehren "Bru" Potter among others. Halliburton also spends a significant amount of time discussing the war with China and Japan and the Japanese belief systems. Letter 2: The second letter discusses the search for an appropriate junk and the ultimate decision to build their own that could be modified for the journey. Working with the man said to be the best ship-builder in Hong Kong Mr. Fat Kau and the appropriation of a few more crew members a chef and a radio operator. Letter 3: The third letter posted from Canton desribes their taking the Sea Dragon out for a "shake down" cruise with Mr. Fat Kau as his guest who though a builder of ships had never sailed on one and with high seas nearly everyone aboard became seasick. Halliburton notes the dry deck despite the high waves and believes he was right about the Sea Dragon's sea-worthiness. Much of the rest of the letter is spent discussing Canton the disputes between the Chinese and Japanese the destruction the looters and other conditions in the city. Letter 4: After setting out on their voyage the Sea Dragon needed to return after only 2 days due to sickness on the boat. Though Halliburton seems only a trifle annoyed at the delay of their voyage he is excited enough to try again and leaves his readers with this: "In about another week we plan to leave again to slip away as quietly as possible and head east once more around the southern tip of Formosa - and straight on to Midway. If all goes well the next letter the fifth will carry an American stamp for Midway Island is American. When this the fourth letter reaches you we'll be a thousand miles along the way - I hope. Many thanks again for your interest and good will. Faithfully Richard Halliburton" The Trans-Pacific Chinese Junk Expedition, Inc unknown‎

‎Europa-schachturnier München 1941‎

‎1404 ad pages with cross-tables diagrams and pictures. Octavo 8" x 5½" issued in original wrappers. Bücherei des Grossdeutschen schachbundes Book 9. Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5627 First edition.

The second Europaturnier the first one took place in Stuttgart in May 1939 was held in Munich in 8-14 September 1941. The event was organised by Ehrhardt Post the Chief Executive of Nazi Grossdeutscher Schachbund and was a 16 person round robin event. Max Euwe had declined the invitation for München 1941 due to his "occupational obligations" as manager of a groceries business. This time he refused to participate because Alexander Alekhine was invited. Euwe mentioned futile reasons. The real motive was Alekhine's offence of Euwe in his antisemitic articles. Alekhine wrote six Nazi articles which first appeared in the Paris newspaper Pariser Zeitung in March 1941. He wrote a series of articles for Die Deutsche Zeitung in den Niederlanden called "Jewish and Aryan Chess." The articles were reproduced in Deutsch Schachzeitung. Among others Alekhine had written about the "Jewish clique" around Euwe in World Chess Championship 1935. The event was won by Gösta Stoltz who scored a spectacular victory 1½ points ahead of Alekhine and Erik Lundin and won 1000 Reichsmarks. His trophy donated by the Ministerpräsident Ludwig Siebert of Meissen porcelain is worth close to $1000. Alexander Alekhine and Erik Lundin tied for second through third with 10½ points. Efim Bogoljubow captured fourth with a score of 9½. Bjørn Nielsen and Kurt Richter tied for fifth through sixth with scores of 9. Jan Foltys was clear seventh with 9 points.

Condition:

Lacks frontispiece wrappers soiled corners bumped small tear at front head hinge else a good to very good copy. ‎Schach-Olympia Munchen 1936 I. Teil & II. Tiel: Im Auftrage Des Grobebeaustschen‎

‎Leipzig: Druck von Metzger & Wittig 1937 2 volumes: 1764 ad pages with diagrams tables and plates; 1924 ad pages with diagrams tables plates and index. Octavo 8 1/2" x6" issued in beige cloth with blue lettering to spine and front cover. Volumes 6 & 7 from the 1936 Olympics coverage. Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5534. 1st edition. The German Chess Federation wanted to organize an Olympiad as a counterpart to the Olympic Games at Berlin in 1936. Munich was chosen to be the venue - for the local chess club was celebrating its centenary - and teams of eight plus two reserves were invited to take part. But since the German Chess Federation was not a member of FIDE the event was not recognized as belonging to the official series of Olympiads. Twenty-two countries entered for this mammoth tournament and of these only Spain later withdrew. However the dates coincided with the international tournament at Nottingham with the result that not only was the English team unable to enter but also a number of grandmasters were absent from the top boards of their respective countries. The favorites seemed about equally handicapped by this. In all the history of chess there had been very few international matches in which the number of players on each side exceeded that in normal Olympiads. Accordingly it was difficult to compare the teams and to size up their chances beforehand. The following were considered to have good prospects of gaining a high place: Hungary a solied powerful side led by grandmaster Maroczy; the German team which had prepared itself thoroughly for this event; and countries such as Poland Sweden Yugoslavia Czechoslovakia and Austria whose chess traditions were strong. The Olympiad opened on August 17th with 208 participants the Dutch and Brazilian teams had only nine players. A chess tournament on such a scale had never been witnessed before 1680 games were played! and only the most recent Olympiads have surpassed it in size. From the very beginning the struggle was fierce. Moreover owing to the numerous adjourned games and the bye caused by the odd number of teams even those 'on the inside' found it hard to assess the situation clearly. For two-thirds of the distance the lead altered between German and Poland with the Czechs and Yugoslavs in hot pursuit. Hungary had the free day early on in the fourth round and for that reason did not figure among the chief pace-makers at first. Nevertheless the leaders had the disquieting feeling that their dangerous rival was not far behind. The Hungarians gaining one sound victory after another gradually overcame every obstacle. As the teams in front had the bye so their advantage disappeared until at last in the sixteenth round when Germany were free Hungary assumed the lead. From then onwards they held it securely entering the last round four points ahead of the field; a modest win over Norway was sufficient to give them first place. Hungary's achievement in defeating in an all-play-all tournament all the opposition without conceding a single drawn match remained unequaled in the Olympiads until 1960. Poland finished second and Germany third. Foldeak Chess Olympiads Condition: Spine ends chipped soiled corners bumped and rubbed through book plate removed from paste down of first volume else about very good issued without jackets.
