Stendhal; Bontempelli M. (cur.)
Ricordi di egotismo
br.

Stephen Crane 1871 1900
Red Badge of Courage
xli267 pages. Small octavo 7 1/4" x 5" bound in original publisher's red cloth with black label in gilt lettering to spine and cover in original pictorial jacket. Number 130 in the Modern Library Series. The Red Badge of Courage is a war novel by American author Stephen Crane 1871–1900. Taking place during the American Civil War the story is about a young private of the Union Army Henry Fleming who flees from the field of battle. Overcome with shame he longs for a wound a "red badge of courage" to counteract his cowardice. When his regiment once again faces the enemy Henry acts as standard-bearer.<br />Although Crane was born after the war and had not at the time experienced battle first-hand the novel is known for its realism. He began writing what would become his second novel in 1894 using various contemporary and written accounts such as those published previously by Century Magazine as inspiration. It is believed that he based the fictional battle on that of Chancellorsville; he may also have interviewed veterans of the 124th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment commonly known as the Orange Blossoms. Initially shortened and serialized in newspapers in December 1895 the novel was published in full in October 1895. A longer version of the work based on Crane's original manuscript was published in 1983. Condition: jacket edge wear with chips spine sunned else a avery good copy in like jacket. Stern Daniel; Forcina M. (cur.)
Storia della rivoluzione del 1848
br. Marie Catherine Sophie de Flavigny, contessa d'Agoult, in arte Daniel Stern.

Sterpos Marco
Studi carducciani vecchi e nuovi
br.

STEVESON Adlai 1900 1975
Typed Letter Signed
Chicago 1953. First. unbound. very good. Outstanding T.L.S. 4to. 1 page personal stationary Chicago August 31 1953 to political adviser and Pulitzer Prize recipient Leland Stowe in part: ".I am baffled by the sudden change of attitude about McCarthy by many people I have talked to but perhaps "baffled" is not the word exactly. At any rate there seems to be a feeling he is slipping fast since his attack on the clergy and for me to proceed too aggressively would be to reinvigorate him because of the Protestant political implications." Stevenson's dilemma: McCarthy a staunch Catholic aligned himself with Joseph P. Kennedy a powerful Democrat and another rabid anti-Communist. The relationship was so strong that McCarthy even dated Kennedy daughters Patricia and Eunice. In addition to this Senator John F. Kennedy who served with McCarthy did not support Kennedy's Republican opponent Henry Cabot Lodge. As all this was happening McCarthy became godfather to Robert F. Kennedy's first child Kathleen and would later select Robert as a Council serving on this committee. After all Joseph Kennedy had an agenda: he would support McCarthy as a national Catholic politician who in return might help pave the way for a younger Kennedy's Presidential candidacy. Fine condition. American politician and diplomat who served as Governor of Illinois from 1949-1953. In 1952 and 1956 he was selected as the Democratic Party's candidate for President. unknown
