Jasin Rabbi Joseph. 1883 1968. Rabbi of the Fort Worth Congregation Beth El 1904 1908.
TWO TYPED LETTERS SIGNED BY ZIONIST AND FORT WORTH TEXAS RABBI JOSEPH JASIN.
Gloversville NY: September 10 and October 8 1919. 1919. Very good. - Two typed letters each filling most of a sheet of 11 inch high by 8-1 /2 inch wide New Jewish Chronicle letterhead with a decorative heading in black. Both letters are signed "Joseph Jasin". In the September letter a red ink decorative arrow draws attention to 1 paragraph. There is some soiling to the bottom edge of the October letter as well as a pencil note and a "date answered" stamp. Folded three times for mailing. Very good
Following an interview with the Pond Lyceum Bureau in New York City Jasin writes to the bureau about his interest in giving his lecture "Modern Myths and Miracles". In October he follows up with a second letter both times emphasizing that the materials he left with the staff should be returned to him.

Joseph Jasin 1883-1968 a native of Poland and an early Zionist arrived at a young age as a newly ordained rabbi at the Reform Jewish Congregation Beth-El formed in 1902 in Fort Worth Texas. He reinvigorated the religious school and doubled the membership of the congregation. He remained in Fort Worth until 1908 when he was drafted to New York as secretary of the Federation of American Zionists the forerunner of the Zionist Organization of America. At that time Zionism seemed like an impossible dream and Jasin and fellow Reform Zionists found themselves denounced by all but a very few American Reform rabbis and by Orthodox and Conservative Zionists as a turncoat for following Reform. Later in life Jasin went on to a pulpit in Pasadena California where he established a prison chaplaincy and developed an interest in parapsychology. He remained an organizer editor and innovator throughout his career.
Gloversville, NY: September 10 and October 8, 1919.

La grande rvolution
Haarlem Rozenkruis Pers Pays-Bas Bibliothque de la Pierre Angulaire n31981 in 8 22 x 14 cm 145 pages. Couverture souple illustre. First state with "brite" uncorrected on page 281 and back wrapper with Steinbeck's photograph. First edition first state.

East of Eden is a novel by Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck published in September 1952. Often described as Steinbeck's most ambitious novel East of Eden brings to life the intricate details of two families the Trasks and the Hamiltons and their interwoven stories. The novel was originally addressed to Steinbeck's young sons Thom and John then 6½ and 4½ years old respectively. Steinbeck wanted to describe the Salinas Valley for them in detail: the sights sounds smells and colors. The Hamilton family in the novel is said to be based on the real-life family of Samuel Hamilton Steinbeck's maternal grandfather. A young John Steinbeck also appears briefly in the novel as a minor character. According to his third and last wife Elaine Steinbeck considered it his magnum opus. Steinbeck stated about East of Eden: "It has everything in it I have been able to learn about my craft or profession in all these years." He further claimed: "I think everything else I have written has been in a sense practice for this."

Condition:

Corners bumped book-plate removed from front paste down spine head with small split. The Moon is Down
188 pages. Small octavo 7 1/2" x 5 1/4" bound in original publisher's blue cloth with silver lettering to spine and cover blind stamped in original pictorial jacket. First edition second state with the improper period removed from page 112.

Pearl Harbor marked a turning point in Steinbeck's fiction. With "The Moon is Down" 1942 Steinbeck creates the story of a close-knit community that is forced to face the brutal realities of Nazi occupation. The book was inspired by European refugees and it is a bit of Steinbeck's propaganda during the early days of World War II. While some American critics faulted the novel for its sympathetic portrayals of Nazi soldiers the book was widely popular in Europe. "The Moon is Down" was distributed by the resistance fighters in Europe and was even banned in Italy. The penalty for reading the book was death. As Dr. Winter and Joseph talk about time occupations and machines Dr. Winter says "They hurry toward their destiny as though it would not wait. They push the rolling world along with their shoulders." Only one of the soldiers has ever experienced war before and even Colonel Lanser is under the illusion that he will avoid the inevitable terror of war-time occupation. "Lanser had been in Belgium and France twenty years before" Steinbeck writes "and he tried not to think what he knew--that war is treachery and hatred the muddling of incompetent generals the torture and killings and sickness and tiredness until at last it is over and nothing has changed except for new weariness and new hatreds." In his fast-paced dialogue-ridden play-like style Steinbeck creates a hopeless situation. The soldiers gradually go mad or they die mysterious deaths as they go out alone searching for human companionship and kindness. It becomes obvious to the villagers that resistance is not futile. As their collaborative hatred grows and as martyrs are made of their most-beloved citizens the people become a force. Dr. Winter says "all invaded people want to resist." And Mayor Orden says "I am a little man and this is a little man but there must be a spark in little men that can burst into flame." It's much more than about simply living or dying winning or losing. The book forces the reader to reevaluate conceptions of humanity and justice.

Condition:

Book plate on front paste down. In the beginning of the book Steinbeck's writing is so clear so realistic you would swear you were inside the bus stop's coffee shop. Unfortunately the reader can become lost in the last part of the book when Steinbeck's writing becomes too allegorical.
