‎SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY AUTHORS: A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF FIRST PRINTINGS OF THEIR FICTION AND SELECTED NONFICTION. Revised Edition‎

‎Olathe KS: RB Publishing 2002. Searchable CD-ROM. Revised and corrected edition. Quasi-descriptive bibliography compiled to meet the need for a single volume bibliography providing comprehensive and accurate checklists of all book fiction by major authors identified with the science fiction fantasy and horror genres from the late nineteenth-century through the 1970s. This work loosely modeled on Merle Johnson's classic American First Editions provides the first comprehensive listing of book fiction by 215 authors highly regarded for their writings in the science fiction fantasy and horror fields. The bibliography is intended for those who wish to identify first and significant later printings and editions of books by these authors. The checklists are designed to provide listings of all book fiction for each author through 1977 in a compact but comprehensive and coherent format and to provide descriptions that will enable the reader to identify first and other significant printings and editions. To aid researchers and collectors in addition to describing the first printing the hardcover printing of any book preceded by a paperback printing or printings is described. Later printings or editions with title changes or revised texts and reprint collections with rearranged contents abridgments or enlargements are included as well. Anatomy of Wonder 1995 7-7. ‎Alexander Charles Wesley‎

‎Maud of the Mississippi. A Companion to Pauline of the Potomac. By Wesley Bradshaw pseudonym . . . a Thrilling Narrative of the Adventures of Miss Pauline d'Estraye a Young and Beautiful French Lady who after performing the most heroic deeds in Virginia in behalf of the Union was sent officially to the Department of the Mississippi‎

‎Philadelphia: C.W. Alexander & Co 1864. First Edition. Original pictorial wrappers printed in blue and black 9.25 x 5.75 inches i-iv 21-30 31-32 39-52 53-54 61-74 75-76 85-100 pages i.e. 64 pages as published. Full-page woodcut illustrations included in the pagination. Copyright date on the title page of 1863; the dated preliminary text dated January 15 1864. Somewhat worn some staining and light foxing especially toward the rear; a good sound copy. Fact or fiction the present account celebrates the covert role of women as gatherers of military intelligence during the Civil War. The spectacular illustrated cover is given a full-page reproduction by Alice Fahs' in her "The Imagined Civil War: Popular Literature of the North and South 1861-1865" p. 243. The text is accompanied by a number of naive woodcuts and presents the account of "Maud Melville" the non-de-guerre of "Pauline D'Estraye" who is herself a fictional character invented by "Wesley Bradshaw" pseudonym of Charles Wesley Alexander. The layers of literary deceipt are appropriate for a spy-thriller such as this.<br/><br/>"There is little evidence that the author's Civil War characters were based on real people. However at the beginning of 'Pauline of the Potomac' 1862 Bradshaw hinted at the fact asserting that in the tale he had merged stories from real wartime incidents. Some believe that the character of Pauline D'Estraye was Pauline Cushman 1835-1893 actress and Union spy who was born in New Orleans to a Spanish political refugee and a Frenchwoman. At age 18 she went to New York to earn her living and was recruited there by the manager of the New Orleans Varieties for his show. She and her husband another performer toured throughout the country. When the Civil War erupted he enlisted in the Union army as a musician; she continued to perform until commissioned as a secret agent by the federal government in 1863 with instructions to penetrate as far south as possible. Apprehended by Confederate forces near Tullahoma Tennessee she was tried and sentenced to hang in June 1863. Fortunately for her she was left behind when the advancing army of General William S. Rosecrans forced the Confederates to retreat. Although her usefulness as a spy came to an end she returned to the stage lecturing throughout the North in a federal uniform to great acclaim. Cushman's glamorous but slightly shady profession in addition to her feats of espionage was ideal material for the dime novels of the day. "Maud of the Mississippi" is one of several such novels that appeared during the war years. The heroine Maud Melville gathers intelligence for General Grant as she performs as an actress in towns along the lower Mississippi River. <br/><br/>¶ Fact or fiction Gen. Grant's woman spy Maud Melville was a coquettish young woman with nerves of steel and a genius for military strategy. She is sent by Grant into Vicksburg as a spy; her efforts help the Union army capture the city. Hints that she has captured the affections of General Pemberton are offset by her evident piety; Maud meets with such success that the present account concludes with the promise "Her daring exploits during General Grant's subsequent campaign and her final discovery and capture by the rebels in Georgia which are far more exciting than her previous adventures will be published immediately in a second volume of the same style and price as this book."<br/><br/>Scarce: we have located only one copy in on the market since 2008 namely in M & S Rare Books Catalogue Eighty Four item 16 - this copy<br/><br/>REFERENCES: Women in the American Civil War ed. ‎Junior Aid Recipe Book. Compiled by the Junior Aid Society of the Wesley M. E. Church Warehouse Point Conn‎

‎Warehouse Point East Windsor Conn: The Church 1927. Octavo 23 x 15.5 cm. 92 pages. Includes table of contents. Advertising interspersed. Evident FIRST EDITION. A church cookbook with two hundred eighty attributed recipes from the North Central Connecticut community of East Windsor. Meat dishes document the "international" interest of the 1920s: English Hotch Potch Hungarian Goulash Italian Spaghetti Dutch Casserole and jarring though it always seems Arabian Pork Chops. Elsewhere an effort to include local American regions crops up: Virginia Vegetable Soup Philadelphia Cinnamon Buns Vermont Canned Chicken. A reference to whole grain in baking seems evident in one recipe calling for "entire wheat." ~ Warehouse Point is a historic neighborhood in what since 1768 has officially borne the name East Windsor. The area had been known as Warehouse Point since the mid-1600s when it functioned as a river transport station at the southern edge of Springfield Massachusetts Colony. The Wesley Church at 55 Main Street - now Wesley United Methodist of East Windsor - prospers its white clapboards rounded chancel stunning stained glass historic organ not to forget the bell dedicated in April 1900 all faithfully maintained. ~ The signature of the book's original owner may have belonged to Ruth Ethel Humason 1893-1949 who according to census records that place them in Warehouse Point had a younger sibling named Ina Louise 1895-1982. The identification rests on the slender evidence that a handwritten recipe labeled "Ina's Choc Frosting" is folded on a loose leaf within the pages of Junior Aid Recipe Book. ~ Shelfworn. Stapled in green wrappers now soiled with black lettering and a photograph of the church within a black border; back chipped and separated save for four strips of white cloth tape applied by a previous owner. Some pages splatter-stained and page fore-edges soiled with chipping and marring of text. Owner's name in ink on front cover: "Ruth E. Humason June 3rd 1927." Good only. Unrecorded. ‎Manuscript correspondence; Wesley‎

A light and touching correspondence from an absent husband perhaps in the military or in some sort of work camp environment to his absent wife; a nice glimpse of mid-19th century relations. He gives further evidence of his expertise in the kitchen at the expense of outdoor work noting "I can't bake the flower I can cook the rice and eggs tho" and closes with the sentiment "make your self easy about us until you can leave there altho I would like to be with you. My Dear be faithful and watch and pray and encourage your Father all you can take good care of James and kiss him for me." No envelope and no hints as to which New Castle Del. Ohio Penn. or Indiana. ‎London: W. Hodsoll 1827. Folio. i title 32-37 pp. Engraved.<br/><br/>Rather worn and frayed; slightly foxed; split at spine with leaves loose. First Edition later issue. KO 621 p. 647. RISM W 924.<br/><br/>"Given Wesley's fame as a keyboard player it is not surprising that keyboard music should form an important part of his output and the largest category of his music published in his lifetime. Despite a good deal of recent publishing activity however only a small proportion of his keyboard music is available in modern editions. In the organ music Wesley's grand manner is heard at its best in the op.6 voluntaries while a more intimate and miniaturist side to his musical character is apparent in the Twelve Short Pieces."
