Two volumes small octavo pp xvi 348; xii 345 two page publisher's catalogue dated January 1856 at rear of second volume illustrated with two frontispieces a red plate of the Dhurma Rajah's seal and wood engravings in the text. Both volumes are original green cloth and have been neatly recased and rebacked with the original spines which are lacking pieces at the head and tail laid down the original yellow endpapers retained. Volume 1 - the hinge after the frontispiece cracking but absolutely no weakness the fore-edge is a little uneven and in three places it is worn into a slight groove. Volume 2 is better throughout. Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker 1817 - 1911 was a British botanist and explorer. He was a founder of geographical botany and Charles Darwin's closest friend. For twenty years he served as director of the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew succeeding his father William Jackson Hooker and was awarded the highest honours of British science. His expedition to the Himalayas lasted three years and he was the first European to collect plants there; he was among many things responsible for the introduction of many Rhododendrons toBritish gardens. He never set out to emulate such figures as Lancelot Brown or Humphry Repton but remained at the cutting edge of contemporary horticultural techniques about which he wrote extensively; perhaps his greatest area of expertise being that of hot-house design and heating seen to great effect in this work . Folio pp iv ii 716 with an engraved frontispiece 60 engraved plates plates 66 - 80 in the appendix i.e. LACKING five plates in the appendix some age-toning internally the odd blemish here and there the frontispiece with two earlier minor repairs a partly unpressed copy which has resulted in a horizontal crease to the last sixty pages or so see illustration and a slight depression to earlier ones bound in a recent half calf with very slight signs of use with marbled endpapers. Plate 31 is bound slightly out of order and plate 59 has a small ink scribble in the margin and has the plate number corrected in ink. Blanche Henrey 805 mentioning a portrait as well as an allegorical frontispiece; the portrait is not present in our copy. Sir John Hill was an English composer actor author and botanist. He contributed to contemporary periodicals and engaged in literary battles with poets playwrights and scientists. A controversial figure John Hill's often provocative and scurrilous writings involved him in many quarrels both in the field of science and that of literature. Nevertheless his general approval of Linnaeus resulted in many of Hill's publications using the Linnean system for the first time. Second edition. Full Leather. Good. Small slim 12mo pp 2 124 a hand-coloured frontispiece map pages age-toned but otherwise very clean and sound a little browning to the frontispiece and title page with the book label of Baronet Bron=mhead of Thurlby Hall on the front endpaper original green polished cloth with gilt decoration on upper cover showing an ornate vase of flowers slight marks and bumps the spine label appears to have been hand-written on paper but is now largely lacking. RARE AND A VERY GOOD COPY. Godfrey Howitt - 1800-1873 - was physician to the Nottingham General Hospital from 1829 to 1839 and was keenly interested in science and literature. He wrote this standard work The Flora of Nottinghamshire and discovered a new species of catchfly which grew on the Castle Rock. Professor John Wilson "Christopher North" of Edinburgh made the "Ettrick Shepherd" in Blackwoods Magazine described his as "Ane o' the best botanists in England an' a desperate beetle hunter." His ardent love for collecting accompanied him to Australia and he bequeathed his natural history collection and library to the Melbourne Museum The Howitt Collection. He also gave £1000 to found scholarships in Natural History in the University. In 1847 he became one of the first physicians to the Melbourne Hospital and had the experience of being paid his fees in gold dust by miners who consulted him professionally. . First Edition. Cloth. Large thick folio title page dedication page preface two pages author's tributes ten pages then ii 1734 but actually slightly less as there are several errors of pagination illustrated with over 2100 woodcut figures lacking the extra engraved title page the 20-page addenda at the rear and the errata leaf but otherwise complete and very sound. The contents are extremely clean and tight there is the odd crease and an occasional tiny corner missing but overall in impressive condition. The front and rear endpapers are a little browned and marked both front and rear hinges are cracked and showing a little silver-fish damage but there is no weakness at all. Full panelled calf probably eighteenth century but possibly earlier a little rubbed a little worn at the edges scuffed on the upper cover rebacked fairly recently with a leather spine and red morocco label. Blanche Henrey 286. Very heavy - extra postage will be required. John Parkinson 1567 - 1650 was both the last of the great English herbalists and one of the first of the great English botanists. He was apothecary to James I and a founding member of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in December 1617 and was later Royal Botanist to Charles I. The Theatrum was the most complete and beautifully presented English treatise on plants of its time. One of the most eminent gardeners of his day he kept a botanical garden at Long Acre in Covent Garden today close to Trafalgar Square and maintained close relations with other important English and Continental botanists herbalists and plantsmen. . ‎Washington: Government Printing Office 1885. First edition. The front wrapper is a little foxed and browned the remainder of the text is bright and clean; a tight copy in very good condition. Pp. 2 1-185. Later wine-red cloth lettered in gilt on the spine original printed brown wrappers bound in place lg 8vo. The front wrapper reads "Extracted from the Annual Report of the Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries for 1884." This is one of the earliest monographs by Jordan who began his publication career in 1876. This significant monograph is much cited in ichthyologic literature. This copy is from the research library of ichthyologist Albert W. Herre with his signature on the front wrapper and title page. The front wrapper is inscribed: "To Earl S. Herald from Albert W. Herre" along the top edge. According to Wiki: Earl S. Herald 1914-1973 was an American biologist geriatric diver and television advisor. His main interest was in ichthyology. Herald received his M.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1939. In 1943 he received his Ph.D. from Stanford University for the dissertation "Studies on the Classification and Inter-Relationships of the American pipefishes" under George Sprague Myers. In 1946 he studied the effects of the atomic bomb tests on the reef fish of the Bikini Atoll. In 1948 Herald was appointed curator for Aquatic Biology at the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco; in 1949 he became director of the aquarium. From 1952 to 1966 Herald moderated the scientific television broadcast 'Science in Action' for the California Academy of Sciences. Herald wrote two books "Living Fishes of the World" and "Fishes of North America" and 93 magazine and technical journal articles. In 1973 he died in a scuba accident in the coastal waters off Cabo San Lucas in Baja California all adapted from Wiki biography. This is a rare monograph with significant associations. Like the Aloes they are members of the subfamily Asphodeloideae and they generally resemble miniature aloes except in their flowers which are distinctive in appearance. Horticulturally they are popular garden and container plants from Wiki. This is an important taxonomic revision of the genus Haworthia that was named after Adrian H. Haworth who was an English entomologist botanist and crustacean expert. This very rare offering is finely bound in attractive dark green morocco that is housed in a custom slipcase.
