‎Vimalakirtinirdesasutra. Edition altturkischer Ubersetzungen nach Handschriftfragmenten von Berlin und Kyoto. Mit einem Appendix von Jorinde Ebert. Ein Vimalakirti-Bildfragment aus Turfan‎

‎Hardback, 205 pages., 190 Abbildungen, 210 x 295 mm. ISBN 9782503509570. Languages: German.‎

‎Magische Texte des uigurischen Buddhismus‎

‎Paperback, XCVII+237 p., 207 b/w ill., 210 x 297 mm. ISBN 9782503518404. The book contains editions of nine Old Uighur translations of Buddhist magical texts, which are compared to their Chinese and/or Tibetan counterparts. No parallel could be found for one sutra, which may be considered as an original Uighur composition and thus deserves special interest. These works based on Central Asian fragments from several Turfan and Dunhuang collections, mainly from the collection of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, through new light into the history of the well established domain of Uighur Tantric Buddhism during the 11th through 14th centuries. Six of these sutras are newly identified texts, while the edition of the well-known sutra on the Great Bear has been improved. German translations and notes accompany the transliterated and transcribed texts. A glossary as well as plates of the edited fragments conclude the volume. Languages: German.‎

‎Buch von der Sundentilgung. SET. Edition des altturkisch-buddhistischen K'anti Kilguluk Nom Bitig‎

‎Paperback, LI+607 p., 120 b/w ill., 210 x 297 mm. ISBN 9782503526218. The book is the first comprehensive edition of all hitherto identified fragments of the K'anti Kilguluk Nom Bitig in Old Uygur (Old Turkic) culled from several collections of Central Asian manuscripts in Germany, Russia, China and Japan. The text is a translation in 40 chapters of a Chinese Buddhist work (Cibei daochang chanfa) which belongs to the apocrypha. It testifies to the strong influence of Chinese Buddhism at the beginning of the second millennium A.D. among the Uygurs. The objective of the work, which was intended to be recited during a ritual, is the expiation of sins. Another aim was to rescue the patrons' relatives from a life in unfavourable births among hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals etc. Remarkable is the insertion of what must have been originally about a thousand Buddha names numerous of which are preserved in the Old Uygur version. ‎Prajn'p'ramit' Literature in Old Uyghur‎

‎Paperback, 343 p., 88 b/w ill., 210 x 297 mm. ISBN 9782503528885. The seven texts edited in this volume give new insights into the Prajn'p'ramit' literature in Old Uyghur, an important corpus of Old Uyghur Buddhist texts. The volume presents each text with a transcription, transliteration and translation into English on facing pages. Besides the general introduction it also includes an extensive introduction to each text, philological and Buddhological notes, a complete glossary with Chinese counterparts and facsimiles of selected fragments. The volume also makes available for the first time an extensive edition of three important Buddhist texts, namely the Diamond Sutra, the Heart Sutra and the fragments of various commentaries. Master Fu's verse commentary both with and without the sutra text is considerably enlarged, including a large number of new fragments which were identified after the publication of the Berliner Turfantexte I. ‎altturkische Kommentar zum Vimalakirtinirdesa-Sutra‎

‎Paperback, 237 p., 210 x 297 mm. ISBN 9782503541570. The book is the first edition of the Old Turkish commentary on the Vimalakirtinirdesa-Sutra. All fragments that were identified belonging to this commentary are now preserved in the Berlin Turfan Collection. The relevant commentary may have been based on a Chinese text, whose author was a representative of the Tiantai school. However, some lines in the Old Turkish version are the additions of the Uyghur translator or, more specifically, author and clearly show the strong influence of the Yogic'ra school, which was then studied with keen interest in Dunhuang, the neighbouring city of Turfan. This fact indicates the close relationship between this Uyghur author and the Buddhism in Dunhuang. Moreover, the Old Turkish version of the Vimalakirtinirdesa-Sutra (published by Peter Zieme as Berliner Turfantexte XX) is preserved. The comparison between these two texts shows, however, that both texts were independently translated into Old Turkish. Languages: German.‎

‎uigurischen buddhistischen Kolophone‎

‎Paperback, 388 p., 210 x 297 mm. ISBN 9782503528021. Buddhist colophons are the texts added after Buddhist sutras and commentaries. They were written by the individuals who composed the text in question (authors), translated it (translators), had it copied or printed (patrons), copied it (copyists), or read it (readers). While Buddhist sutras and commentaries were copied several times and handed down nearly unchanged through time, colophons were as a rule unique. In comparison with the former, the latter can therefore be described as individual. Many colophons were added to the Uighur Buddhist texts. These colophons provide essential information about Uighur Buddhism and Buddhists such as the date of the composition or translation of the text, the names of the authors, translators, patrons and members of Buddhist families, the reasons for acting as patrons and the requests expressed by them. This book is the first comprehensive edition of the published colophons. The author examines their historical development. Unpublished colophons have been added. Languages: German.‎

‎Hardback, 240 p., 98 ill., 210 x 295 mm. ISBN 9782503506357. The Sermon on the Soul is a Manichaean tract largely reconstructed from some 60 fragments in Parthian, Sogdian and Old Turkish. It played a big part in the East Manichaean tradition, attested in more than 30 manuscripts and inspiring later East Manichaean works, even hymns in the Chinese language. The sermon underscores the identity of the individual souls and the cosmic viva anima, of the spiritual nature of the soul and the five light elements, and it decribes the benificient, meritorious activities of the world soul on behalf of the wordly creatures. It gives an uncommonly optimistic description of life on earth and is remarkable for its well-designed parables. It is an outstanding example of Manichaean prose literature and contributes considerably to our knowledge of the Manichaean doctrine. Languages: German.‎

‎Lettres ou ne pas lettres. Melanges de litterature francaise de Belgique offerts a Roland Beyen.‎

‎Paperback, Francais, sous jacquette originale d'editeur, 16x24 cm., 650 pp. ISBN 9789058671646. Symbolae Facultatis Litterarum Lovaniensis - Series D : Litteraria 14.

‎Under Construction. Links for the Site of Literary Theory. Essays in Honour of Hendrik van Gorp.‎

‎Paperback, English, original editor's jacket, 16x24 cm., vi-408 pp. ISBN 9789058670281. Professor Hendrik Van Gorp was dean of the Arts Faculty, head of the department of Literary Studies and a prominent and unfailingly inspiring member of the section for General and Comparative Literature. At the end of the academic year 1999-2000 he retired from his academic post. On Saturday May the 6th he delivered his valedictory lecture: Tussen interpretatie en wetenschap: academische literatuurstudie? On this occasion his colleagues offered him 'Under Construction. Links for the Site of Literary Theory', a collection of essays written by international scholars. This volume is both an act of homage to Hendrik Van Gorp and a representation of the diverse areas of literary research in which he has been active: narratology, hermeneutics, the study of translation and adaptation, and the study of literary dynamics.‎

‎Joannes della Faille s.j. Mathematics, Modesty and Missed Opportunities‎

‎Paperback, 177 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9789074461535. Every study on sir Anthony Van Dijck contains the portrait of Joannes della Faille s.j. While the portrait is well-known, much less is known about the sitter. Yet Joannes della Faille (1597-1652) was one of the finest mathematicians of his generation. He was one of the first students of Gregorius a Sancto Vincentio s.j. and arguably his best. Della Faille published only one book 'De Centro Gravitatis' in which he calculates the centroid of an ellipse sector. Although this book is elegantly written it was soon superseded by other books on the same subject. This means that della Faille became no more than a footnote in the history of mathematics. Newly discovered manuscript evidence shows that della Faille's research on conic sections was probably on par with that of Pascal and Desargues, whose mathematical work was only saved from oblivion in the nineteenth century. Della Faille did not have that luck and consequently was nearly forgotten. In this study della Faille's results are discussed and a plea is made for reappraisal of his work. ‎Half a century of European Financial Integration, From the Treaties of Rome to the 21st Century‎

‎Hardbound, with dusjacket, Pages: 128, Format: 28 x 23 cm,120 colour illustrations . ISBN 9789061537908. ... With the creation of the Common Market in the sixties the first prudent steps were taken towards financial unification. The turmoil on the exchange markets in the seventies encouraged the European authorities to take more control of the flow of capital. The European Economic Community equipped itself with a fully fledged financial column from 1985 onwards, when a programme for the full liberalisation of goods, services, people and capital was set up. With the Treaty of Maastricht European and monetary union and the creation of a central European bank became definite objectives. The conversion to the Euro in 1999 was the provisional conclusion of a long and exciting process. The introduction of the single currency was also the engine of integration in other sectors of the financial markets, such as bonds or shares. Nonetheless many legal and technical obstacles are yet to be overcome.‎

‎Corpus of Cuneiform Texts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art II Literary and Scholastic Texts of the First Millennium B.C‎

‎Hardback, XLIV+490 p., 220 x 285 mm. ISBN 9782503517407. This important scholarly work is volume two in a series of four volumes that will publish all the more than six hundred cuneiform tablets in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Included are 106 religious, scientific, scholastic, and literary texts, written in Sumerian and Akkadian and primarily dated to the latter part of the first millenium b.c. They shed new light on the civilization of the ancient Near East - on its complex beliefs and customs and surprisingly vast knowledge of mathematics and astronomy - for both the contemporary scholar and interested reader. The texts are organized in five sections: Documents of the Temple Cult include hymns and prayers, rituals and petitions; Documents of the Incantation Priest, Diviner, Physician, and Magician reveal various categories of omens; Literary Texts present myths and legends; The Scholastic Tradition contains a variety of texts and lists, including mathematical and astronomical texts; and the final section covers Unidentified Fragments. Among the most important texts are No. 42, a fragment of the Babylonian version of the ancient Flood story, and No. 81, which attests to the intellectual achievement of Babylonian astronomers. Eighteen distinguished international scholars in the field have contributed transliterations and translations of each tablet, and these are accompanied by commentaries and by insightful introductory essays on each genre. The volume was assembled and edited by Ira Spar, Professor of Ancient Studies at Ramapo College of New Jersey, and W. G. Lambert, Professor Emeritus of the University of Birmingham, England. Lambert also contributed several entries and a general introduction that provides contextual information about the transmission of the literary and scholastic tradition in pre-Hellenistic Mesopotamia. The precise facsimile drawings of every tablet hand-made by Ira Spar are a valuable visual accompaniment to the text. This publication reaffirms the Museum's ongoing commitment to promote wider knowledge of Ancient Near Eastern civilization. And significantly, it appears at a time when better understanding of the history and culture of that region of the world holds particular relevance. Volume one of this series (1988) documents 120 tablets, cones, and bricks from the third and second millenia b.c. Volume three (2000) covers private archive texts from the first millenium B.C. Volume four, in preparation, will include an edition of cuneiform tablets written in the first millenium b.c. and inscriptions on bricks, cylinders, and prisms of royal records of the kings of Babylon and Assyria. ‎Dictionary of Old English, Fasc. A‎

‎Microfiche, 2331 p., on 8 microfiche., 140 x 225 mm. ISBN 9780888449221. The fifth and most recent fascicle of the Dictionary of Old english, the letter A, consists of 1505 headwords in 2331 pages on microfiche. The material on which A is based represents a fresh look at all surviving Old English (except multiple copies of texts), an estimated three million running words. Although the Dictionary of Old English is meant to serve as a bilingual translation dictionary, it is also a historical dictionary, an inventory and description of the English language from its earliest appearance in written records, ca.600. It is intended to complement the Oxford English Dictionary for the earliest period of the language; indeed, the Dictionary of Old English will catalogue the Old English vocabulary deliberately excluded from the OED because it failed to survive past 1150. The dictionary draws on as wide a range of texts in date, dialect and genre - as possible. It differs from previous dictionaries in several important features: a listing in a simplified paradigmatic order of every spelling that is attested for a word in the dictionary corpus; frequency counts for each word in the corpus so that readers can determine what proportion of the evidence has been cited; usage labels where they are statistically significant, noting restrictions to a class of texts, to an author, or to a particular period or dialect; exhaustive citation for all words of twelve or fewer occurences. ‎Saint-Benigne de Dijon en l'an mil, 'totius Galliae basilicis mirabilior'. Interpretation politique, liturgique et theologique‎

‎Paperback, 331 p., 10 b/w ill. + 28 colour ill., 210 x 270 mm. ISBN 9782503529387. Languages : French.‎

‎Mortality and Imagination. The Life of the Dead in Medieval English Literature‎

‎Hardback, XIII+304 p., 11 colour ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503524313. More than any single volume has so far attempted, Mortality and Imagination is devoted to the history and literary 'life' of the dead in medieval writing. There have been many books on the medieval culture of death, but this book is the first devoted to the use and representation of the dead in English medieval writing. Mortality and Imagination is a history of the literary 'life' of the dead - in their narrative, aesthetic, and ideological formulation - a theme which up to now has been explored only fragmentarily, available only in studies of particular genres. Kenneth Rooney's book explores a wider range of texts and genres than has been attempted before, and reads the vernacular representation of the dead against the impact of one of the most intriguing cultural phenomena of the Middle Ages - the macabre - a rhetorical and artistic idiom designed to evoke the dead at their most horrifying. Tracing the models for the representation of the dead available to English writers, he offers fresh readings of texts both familiar and neglected, including sermons, tale collections, romances, drama, lyrics, and other genres in the period c.1100-1550. This book is a stimulating appraisal of the impact, in medieval insular contexts, of an international idea of great longevity and significance, and makes an important contribution to the study of death, belief, and society in pre-modern Europe. ‎John Gower. Manuscripts, Readers, Contexts‎

‎Hardback, XII+242 p., 15 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503524702. The essays collected here represent the current state of research into the works of John Gower, poet, philosopher, and contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer. They assess Gower's literary output within the context of manuscript production and readership/ownership in late medieval England and the triangle of Latin, French, and English as literary and official languages in Ricardian England. Sections of the volume focus on manuscripts and the circulation of Gower's works in languages other than English. In addition, the literary and philosophical contexts that inform Gower's poetics and politics are considered here, resulting in readings of the poet's rhetorical and ethical agenda as well as his texts' intervention in and reaction to social outsiders in his contemporary London. A wide variety of critical discourses inform the readings presented here, including medieval English, French, and Latin literary studies, art history, manuscript production and reception, postmodern ethics, and historical studies. ‎What Nature Does Not Teach. Didactic Literature in the Medieval and Early-Modern Periods‎

‎Hardback, XIV+530 p., 3 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503525969. This interdisciplinary volume takes as its subject the multi-faceted genre of didactic literature (the literature of instruction) which constituted the cornerstone of literary enterprise and social control in medieval and early modern Europe. Following an Introduction that raises questions of didactic meaning, intent, audience, and social effect, nineteen chapters deal with the construction of the individual didactic voice and persona in the premodern period, didactic literature for children, women as the creators, objects, and consumers of didactic literature, the influence of advice literature on adult literacy, piety, and heresy, and the revision of classical didactic forms and motifs in the early modern period. Attention is paid throughout to the continuities of didactic literature across the medieval and early modern periods?its intertextuality, reliance on tradition, and self-renewal?and to questions of gender, authority, control, and the socially constructed nature of advice. Contributors particularly explore the intersection of advice literature with real lives, considering the social impact of both individual texts and the didactic genre as a whole. The volume deals with a wide variety of texts from the early Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, written in languages from Latin through the European vernaculars to Byzantine Greek and Russian, offering a comprehensive overview of this pervasive and influential genre. ‎Life and Works of Tolomeo Fiadoni (Ptolemy of Lucca)‎

‎Hardback, XVIII+276 p., 2 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503529233. Tolomeo Fiadoni (1236-1327) was one of the most remarkable of medieval writers. Living to almost one hundred years of age, Tolomeo bore witness to some of the most important events of the period. He studied and travelled with Thomas Aquinas and was elected Dominican prior in Lucca and Florence. He attended the saintly Pope Celestine V during Celestine's doomed reign, lived at the papal court in Avignon, served in the households of two cardinals, and associated with the infamous Pope John XXII. At the age of eighty, Tolomeo was appointed bishop of Torcello in the Venetian Lagoon, where his superior, the Patriarch of Grado, subsequently excommunicated and jailed him. Tolomeo is known today for his major contribution to republican political thought, most notably his continuation of Thomas Aquinas's only political treatise. However, he also wrote treatises on imperial and ecclesiastical power, a commentary on the six days of creation, a massive Church history, and a European history from 1063 onward. Drawn from all known surviving sources, The Life and Works of Tolomeo Fiadoni is the first full-length study of Tolomeo's life. It discusses each of his works, and addresses numerous problems of authorship and dating. Its companion volume, The Worldview and Thought of Tolomeo Fiadoni (Ptolemy of Lucca), provides an in-depth analysis of Tolomeo's beliefs and thought. Languages : English, Latin.‎

‎Romance and Rhetoric. Essays in Honour of Dhira B. Mahoney‎

‎Hardback, VIII+281 p., 2 b/w ill., 3 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503531496. Reflecting the work of Dhira B. Mahoney, in whose honour this book is published, these essays discuss the intersections between medieval rhetoric and various sorts of medieval literature, with particular focus on romance. This volume honours the academic career of Professor Dhira B. Mahoney, recently retired from the Department of English at Arizona State University, who is well known for her rhetorical readings of medieval literature. Professor Mahoney?s scholarship employs rhetorical theory in readings of late medieval literature, particularly prologues and epilogues, women?s writings, and Arthuriana. As a response to her work, Romance and Rhetoric offers rhetorical readings of a variety of literary pieces from the late Middle Ages, especially for those authors and genres on which Professor Mahoney has published. Its collected essays provide interdisciplinary studies of art, social and literary history, manuscript transmission, and women?s studies in relation to texts in Middle English, Latin, German, and French. In particular, the essays in this volume focus on the writings of courtly authors such as Chaucer, Lydgate, Malory, Guillaume de Machaut, Christine de Pizan, Chretien de Troyes, and others. In keeping with the ancient tradition of analysing rhetorical principles in the structure of an art work, they also examine the rhetoric of the manuscript art connected to these authors and the genres in which they wrote. This volume thus fills a gap in medieval literary scholarship, as it evaluates with scrutiny how rhetorical teachings or medieval poetic strategies inform the writing of romances. ‎Mind Matters. Studies of Medieval and Early Modern Intellectual History in Honour of Marcia Colish‎

‎Hardback, X+308 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503527567. Marcia Colish is one of the most influential scholars of the history of medieval and early modern thought, the author of numerous books and scores of articles in the field, as well as a pioneering President of the Medieval Academy of America. This volume honours her accomplishments with papers by her many colleagues, friends, and former students, who are themselves prominent scholars from across a range of disciplines. The chapters are diverse chronologically and topically, yet they are all stimulated by themes that Prof. Colish has explored during her long and distinguished career. They address the richness of European intellectual history between the twelfth and the sixteenth centuries, treating the multiple heritages of philosophy, theology, political theory, historiography, classical reception, and many other subjects to which her scholarship extends. The volume demonstrates the power of ideas in the development of European history generally, revealing that the careful study of the works of the 'mind' does indeed 'matter'. Languages : English.‎

‎Worldview and Thought of Tolomeo Fiadoni (Ptolemy of Lucca)‎

‎Hardback, XVIII+276 p., 1 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503529264. Tolomeo Fiadoni (1236-1327) was one of the most important political theorists and historians of the Middle Ages. He was central to developing a theory for the practices of Northern Italian republicanism and was hostile to kingship, portraying it as despotic and inappropriate for virtuous and freedom-loving people. He was the first writer to compare Aristotle's examples of Greek mixed constitutions - Sparta, Crete, and Carthage - with the Roman Republic, the ancient Hebrew polity, the Church, and medieval communes, yet he remained a staunch defender of the absolute secular and spiritual monarchy of the pope. Blythe explores various tensions in Tolomeo's work that are often overlooked in scholarly treatments of him, and which derive from cultural preconceptions and the diverse influences on him: Aristotle, Augustine, apologists for papal power, his life in the Dominican Order, his educational experience with Thomas Aquinas, and his social position as a member of Northern Italy's ruling class. These factors exerted contradictory influences on Tolomeo and led him to a sometimes unsuccessful intellectual struggle for consistency. This book is the first full-length study of Tolomeo's thought and it gives full consideration not only to the political writings for which he is most known, but also to his historical and exegetical works. It is the companion to The Life and Works of Tolomeo Fiadoni (Ptolemy of Lucca). Languages : English, Latin.‎

‎Studies on Medieval Empathies‎

‎Hardback, approx. X+380 p., 11 b/w ill. + 6 colour ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503530314. Empathy is a deep feeling or intuition for kinship transcending self-preoccupied individuality. This book is about empathy in the Middle Ages, before it had a name. The authors begin by tracing the origins of empathy in pre-Christian Antiquity and early Christianity, especially in mysteries of divine justice, by which the good often suffered and the wicked prospered and, as with surgical healing, compassion was manifested by inflicting pain. The authors also explore many facets of empathy's development in the Latin West, criss-crossing the artificial borders of academic departments to reveal interlocking connections that give emotional power to images, whether verbal, pictorial, or performative. In a powerful multi-disciplinary collaboration, they identify conditions and limits of empathy, and areas in which the dynamic between insiders and outsiders forced subversive explorations of what it meant to be human. The doctrine of Christ as mediator of divine love dominated medieval thought about empathy as a human instinct. Taken together, like magnetic poles, two pictures in this book represent that mediation in action. The cover illustration, a mid-ninth-century ivory plaque from Carolingian Gaul, depicts Christ, the Divine Word, Love incarnate, glorified, enthroned, and adored by angels as creator, judge, and teacher. The second, Plate 1, from the same period and region, represents the act that sealed the mediation of divine love to humanity: Christ the man, tortured and dying from love.Languages : English, Latin.‎

‎Positivismes. Philosophie, Sociologie, Histoire, Sciences Actes du colloque international, 10-12 decembre 1997, Universite Libre de Bruxelles‎

‎Hardback, 314 p., 155 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503508108.

‎Gerrit Paape (1752-1803). Levens en werken‎

‎Gebonden, geillustreerd, deels in kleur, 14,5x24 cm, 850 pagina's. ISBN 9789460040641.

‎paperback, 224 pagina's. ISBN 9789075697865.
