‎Grim, Ralph Early; Foreword by Frances E Grim‎

‎Memoirs of Ralph Early Grim‎

‎No place but Champaign Illinois: Privately Printed 1991. Very scarce said to be limited to only 6 copies. Appears unread. Fine condition. NOT a library discard. A bright clean square tight copy. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are fresh crisp and unmarked. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Oversize Hardcover. 8.75" wide by 11.25" tall by 1.75" thick. Posthumously printed memoirs of Ralph Early Grim 1902-1989 geologist and Research Professor Emeritus Department of Geology University of Illinois Urbana. The February 2009 newsletter of THE CLAY MINERALS SOCIETY photocopy laid-in contains a tribute to Grim from the University of New Mexico's Dewey Moore. In it Moore writes: "The contrast between his rather humble origins and his lofty reputation as a scientist and world traveler was perhaps the stimulant for him to write his memoirs. After his death his wife Frances E. Grim had them transcribed and a few perhaps 6 copies bound. The original copy of MEMOIRS OF RALPH EARLY GRIM is in the University of Illinois Main Library archives; one copy rests in the Clay Minerals Society's archives." Handsomely bound in the original maroon pebble-grain full leather stamped in shiny gold on the spine and front cover. From Dewey Moore's tribute: "In 1951 Grim shifted to the University of Illinois Geology Department. From this base Grim put his mark on the clay minerals profession: guidance at the 1951 meeting in St. Louis that served as the incubation for what was to become The Clay Minerals Society; his 1953 publication of CLAY MINERALOGY; and the publication of his APPLIED CLAY MINERALOGY 1962. From this point on most of us are familiar with Ralph Grim's history. His books proved to be the vehicles that carried clay science into maturity as a discipline. His professional activities led to many accolades from his peers. The ultimate honor for a mineralogist is to be awarded the Roebling Medal by the Mineralogical Society of America. Ralph Grim accepted this award in 1974. For what could be called the corresponding award for consulting the Ivory Coast in western Africa bestowed on Professor Grim in 1973 the title of Chevalier Knight. Ralph Grim earned this highest honor for a non-citizen for developing local professionals to take over the duties of the Ivory Coast Geological Survey during his 15 visits to the country and for discovering a huge iron deposit in the western part of the country." This large heavy book will require extra postage for Priority and International shipments but only the standard charge for media mail. First Edition 1 of only 6 copies. Oversize Hardcover. Fine condition/No jacket probably as issued. vi 689pp. Privately Printed Hardcover‎

Tribute to geologist and mining engineer Clarence King 1842-1901 published for the King Memorial Committee of the Century Association by G. P. Putnam's Sons. This volume contains the first appearance in book form of King's 38-page short story HELMET OF MAMBRINO. However the bulk of the volume consists of personal memoirs and biographical sketches of King -- with chapters contributed by James D. Hague John Hay William Dean Howells Henry Adams John LaFarge Edmund Clarence Stedman William Crary Brownell Edward Cary Samuel Franklin Emmons Daniel C. Gilman and Rossiter W. Raymond. Bibliography of King's publications. Synoptic Index. When Congress established the United States Geological Survey in 1878 it was King who was put in charge. King initiated the practice of using Hoffmann's contour lines to denote topography on maps and was among the first to make extensive use of the laboratory to solve geophysical problems. In addition to his many scientific contributions "from early youth King had shown literary qualities of a high order and it has always been a source of regret among his friends that he left so little evidence of it. A series of sketches appearing first in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY and afterward in book form under the caption of MOUNTAINEERING IN THE SIERRA NEVADA 1872 and his HELMET OF MAMBRINO in the form of a letter to his friend `Don Horacio' Horace F. Cutter in San Francisco published in the CENTURY MAGAZINE May 1886 serve but to show his latent capability." -- DAB p. 386. Cowan p. 328 A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA 1510-1930. ‎The Minerals of the Bergen Archways Bulletin of the New York Mineralogy Club Vol. 2 No. 2.‎

‎New York: New York Mineralogy Club 1919. 6.25" wide by 9.25" tall. Original light green printed wrappers. Cover lightly soiled. Text pages are NEAR FINE. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Illustrated with map line drawings and 4 photographic plates. Table. Reprinted for the Club from the AMERICAN MINERALOGIST 1919. From the text: "Bergen Hill is about 19 kilometers 12 miles long and 1.6 kilometers 1 mile wide comprising a range of bluffs of Triassic diabase. It commences at Bergen Point and runs behind Jersey City and Hoboken to a point in Weehawken about opposite Thirty-fifth Street in New York City. Here it comes close to the Hudson River and continues north for some 29 kilometers 18 miles to Piermont being known as the Palisades. The Bergen Hill region has long been noted as a locality for zeolites and associated minerals. When the announcement was made that the Erie Railroad Company had begun the construction of an open cut thru the hill local collectors interested in mineralogy looked forward to the collecting of fine specimens. This interest was fully justified from the history of past borings thru Bergen hill. Among the zeolites and related minerals found were: stilbite laumontite gmelinite analcite natrolite apophyllite pectolite and datolite and of common occurrence with these were quartz calcite pyrite chalcopyrite sphalerite and diabantite. While the minerals from the extrusive basalts of West Peterson Great Notch and Upper Montclair are found in cavernous openings amygdules vugs etc. the Bergen Archways minerals were confined to veins. Prehnite heulandite and thomsonite found so abundantly at the former localities were not noted tho Dana lists these minerals from Bergen Hill. A brief description of minerals found by the writer follows." This copy is from the library of scientist and author Robert B. Sosman with his tiny ink stamp. No creases. NO owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. Pages are fresh and crisp. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Volume 2 only. Two other volumes were published: Volume 1 first appeared in 1959; Volume 3 in 1998. Illustrated with over 100 photographs including 16 full color plates. Bound in the original red cloth lettered in shiny gold on the spine. First printing with complete number row 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 987654321 on the copyright page. From the Dust Jacket: "Since the publication of Volume I of this work in 1959 the amount of new information that has accumulated is so large and so different in character that a companion volume became a necessity. Not only have obscure and forgotten gemstone deposits been profitably reopened but extensive new primary sources have been discovered all over the continent. Beautiful specimens of record size and quality have been found as well as entirely new species. Recent mineralogical analyses have yielded surprising data on the origin structure and properties of gemstone classes which is particularly important in identifying problem samples. This volume follows the format of the first: each class of stone -- precious industrial rare massive and organic -- is covered separately with deposits described in precise detail state by state and characteristic features shown in many black-and-white and color illustrations over 100 in all. Pertinent geological and mineralogical information is supplemented by interesting facts about the people involved in mining current price lists of various stones and numerous quotations from the literature and from personal communications. There is an updated geographical index and all the material is keyed to a bibliography of over 2600 entries dating from colonial times to the present -- the first and only definitive reference of its kind ever assembled." . ‎Quantitative Classification of Igneous Rocks Based on Chemical and Mineral Characters with a Systematic Nomenclature signed‎

‎Chicago Illinois: The University of Chicago Press 1903. Bound in the original maroon cloth lighted rubbed. Moderate fraying to spine ends. Inner hinge cracks have been neatly and securely tape-reinforced. WITHDRAWN stamp and other typical library markings. Text pages are clean. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. INSCRIBED SIGNED and dated Jan 1903 by the distinguished geologist Henry Stephens Washington 1867-1934. Most of this book's contents were first published in 1902 in the JOURNAL OF GEOLOGY v. 10. This 1903 edition was the first between hard covers; plus it added tables and a glossary. QUANTITATIVE CLASSIFICATION OF IGNEOUS ROCKS is the basis for the CIPW system of igneous rock taxonomy named CIPW for Cross Iddings Pirsson and Washington. According to Charles Milton Henry S. Washington's part in this was certainly one of his "most significant and enduring contributions to the science of geology: transforming the 'coordinates' of an igneous rock composition -- the list of essential oxide amounts reported in the bulk analysis -- into the chemical coordinates now known as the 'CIPW' norm. The ingenious schedule of calculations. is one of the signal triumphs of the golden age of petrography. What survives -- and thrives -- of the CIPW system is the norm calculation itself. Generations of petrologists have discovered. the norm often provides a characterization of rock composition more immediately meaningful than the oxide vector. The norm also proved invaluable in the critical business of characterizing the components and defining 'systems' studied in the phase equilibrium experimentation." -- National Academy of Sciences Biographical Memoirs V. 60 1991. See also Washington's biography in the DSB v. 14.; and the online tribute to him on the website of the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. The book's subtitle is: "With an introductory review of the development of systematic petrography in the nineteenth century by Whitman Cross." . INSCRIBED / SIGNED by Henry S. Washington.
