La Nouvelle histoire de la litterature latine comprendra huit volumes et prendra en compte la litterature latine depuis ses debuts jusqu'aux debuts du Moyen Age. Le present tome 4 est edite par Klaus Sallmann. La version francaise a ete realisee par des universitaires francais, sous la direction de Francois Heim. Il est consacre a l'age de la transition de la litterature romaine a la litterature chretienne au IIe et IIIe s. apres J.-C. Rome reste encore la capitale et la metropole culturelles, mais deja se fait sentir a nouveau, dans le cadre du bilinguisme, l'influence de la langue et de la litterature grecques. Des developpements litteraire et religieux particuliers s'esquissent ici et la dans l'empire, en particulier en Afrique. A cote de la litterature technique des grammairiens et des antiquaires, on trouve les textes juridiques classiques (Paulus par ex. et Ulpien) qui seront determinants pour la suite. En complement et en contraste avec les ouvrages techniques, surgit la litterature chretienne : traduction de la Bible, Actes de martyrs, apologetique (Tertullien, Minucius Felix), theologie (Novatien et Cyprien), poesie (Commodien). Cette nouvelle grande collection est indispensable au philologue, philosophe, juriste, historien de la medecine, des sciences de la nature ou de l'Antiquite et de la litterature latine. ‎This long-awaited volume is a comprehensive study of the paintings of Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617), the most important artist in the Netherlands at the turn of the seventeenth century. A poem published in Haarlem in 1617 lamented the death that year of the most artful master Hendrick Goltzius, in his life [a] skillful painter, draftsman, and artful engraver. The fact that "painter" heads the list of his accomplishments is significant, for although Goltzius enjoyed international fame as a draughtsman and engraver, to his contemporaries he was equally renowned for his skill in the art of painting, which was considered the highest artistic calling. This volume on his paintings, the first since Hirschmann's short study of 1916, finally completes a full assessment of this artist of Haarlem, whose drawings were the subject of Reznicek's publication of 1961 and whose prints were catalogued by Leesberg in the New Hollstein series that appeared in 2012. Goltzius abandoned his engraver's burin and turned to painting in the year 1600. Exploring the new medium, he worked on small coppers, as well as large canvases and panels. Goltzius's determination to work in oil, after acquiring international fame as a printmaker, was a deliberate decision to embrace an even greater challenge and to seek greater recognition for his artistry. Although archival records show that Goltzius painted more portraits than has previously been assumed, it was the depiction of the human nude that was his primary goal. He mostly chose to paint biblical and mythological themes: the same subject matter, in fact, that he had treated in his engraved histories. The difference, however, was that Goltzius now began to paint figures that were nearly life-size. His manner of depicting figures may be considered an extension of what he had learned during his stay in Rome (1590-91) and subsequently pursued in his prints of the 1590s. Only rarely are traces of his Spranger-inspired, anti-classical past encountered in his paintings. Instead, Goltzius strove with his brush to portray human forms at once idealized and naturalistic. His points of departure were antique Roman sculpture, the sixteenth-century masters - Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Veronese, Durer, and Van Heemskerck - and Rubens, his contemporary. Four chapters are dedicated to a consideration of the reasons for Goltzius's conversion to painting, his biography in the years 1600 to 1617, an examination of the style and iconography of his works in oil, and a thorough review of the critical appraisal of his paintings from his day to the present. The extensive catalogue discusses 59 paintings by Goltzius, and also includes 160 pictures known only from descriptions and 38 rejected works. A lengthy appendix - the result of extensive archival research - includes, in the original language, all known sources that mention Goltzius and every known inventory listing of his paintings.The catalogue of accepted works is ordered iconographically, whereas the color plates of Goltzius's entire extant oeuvre are arranged in chronological order, visually demonstrating the development of his career as a painter. In addition to the color plates, 121 black-and-white figures provide material for comparison. A complete bibliography and three indexes enhance the accessibility and usefulness of this volume.‎

‎A la Renaissance, l'essor de l'imprime et le renouveau des etudes sont a l'origine de grandes mutations qui modifient en profondeur les voies de diffusion de l'ecrit et les pratiques de la lecture. Guillaume Bude, parce qu'il joue un role de premier ordre dans la transmission des textes grace a sa position centrale dans le reseau humaniste francais et europeen, s'impose comme un temoin majeur de ces evolutions. Cette etude commence par l'exploration des conditions materielles de la lecture dans la premiere moitie du XVIe siecle en se fondant en premier lieu sur les temoignages qui fourmillent dans l'ensemble de son oeuvre. Elle s'attache ensuite a analyser ses reflexions theoriques sur la lecture et sur l'etude des lettres pour mettre en lumiere l'originalite de son art de lire qui se fonde principalement sur la notion d'encyclopedisme ainsi que la revendication de la liberte du lecteur. La presentation de cet art de lire se trouve enrichie par l'analyse des representations metaphoriques de la lecture qui fait apparaitre les contradictions et les angoisses inherentes au renouveau de la lecture, en grande partie liees, pour Bude, a la difficile conciliation entre christianisme et lettres profanes. ‎Les Disputatiunculae tenues depuis plusieurs annees au Musee de la Maison d'Erasme ont pour ambition de lancer un coup de projecteur sur des aspects moins connus du monde du livre a l'epoque de la Renaissance. Pour tenter d'expliquer le rayonnement de cet homme insupportable mais fascinant, le projet est ne de reunir une galerie de portraits qui montrent les attitudes parfois contradictoires de Calvin et de son entourage. Les relations de multiples personnages avec le reformateur mettent en lumiere une diversite des approches et des contacts, positifs ou negatifs. Il n'y a pas seulement les amis fideles, ni ceux qui sont devenus des ennemis mortels. Entre les deux, il y a d'autres rencontres, que ce soit avec de nobles princesses ou d'humbles tacherons de la Reforme. Ici, le maladroit Mulot benefice d'une indulgence inouie, tandis que la, Marie d'Ennetieres fait eclater la misogynie du reformateur. Et ainsi de suite dans une cinquantaine de rencontres. La recherche, fondee sur les sources contemporaines, offre des images contrastees. Les qualites eminentes qui caracterisent le reformateur n'empechent pas de denoncer ses defauts, dont certains sont tout aussi eminents. Cette volonte d'eviter tant la calvinolatrie que la clavinophobie donne a ces etres du passe un visage plus humain. Ces peres de la Reforme melangent projets grandioses et mesquineries tout comme les hommes d'aujourd'hui. Languages : French, Old French.‎

‎Separe du Breviaire et du Psautier, le Livre d'Heures etait devenu des le XIIIe siecle le livre de devotion du laic. Il correspondait a l'extension de la pratique de la lecture dans les couches de la societe, alliee a un evident detachement par rapport a l'emprise de l'eglise. L'intensification du culte porte a la Vierge Marie firent d'elle le theme central du Livre d'Heures qui s'organisa autour du petit Office qui la celebrait. Il contient aussi le textes d'autres Offices, dedies en general au Saint Esprit, a la Croix et aux morts ainsi que toute une serie de prieres et invocations variant selon la devotion de leur possesseur et commanditaire. Ce Livre n'etait pas destine aux Offices celebres dans l'Eglise; il etait sense etre utilise par n'importe quel laic, regulierement, aux heures canoniales, dans la solitudes de sa journee domestique. La pratique de recueillement que ce livre impliquait etait en meme temps un hommage et un lien avec la Vierge mais aussi un plaisir pour les yeux, car il fut des le debut, abondamment illustre et decore. Le Livre d'Heures devint ainsi un des joyaux dont s'enorgueillaient les plus riches et les plus nobles qui pouvaient se permettre les services des meilleures miniaturistes de l'epoque. Il fut aussi, plus modestement, celui de tout un chacun, a la mesure de ses moyens financiers. Le nombre impressionnant de le Livres d'Heures executes firent que l'on les appelle couramment aujourd'hui, les "best sellers" des derniers siecles de l'epoque medievale et ceux des annees qui suivirent l'introduction de l'impression. L'abbaye benedictine d'Einsiedeln (Suisse) est depuis des siecles une importante eglise de pelerinage. Sa bibliotheque abrite, parme des tresors insignes, douze Livres d'Heures qui sont ici etudies et publies pour la premiere fois. Leur provenance, la date d'execution et l'artiste ou l'atelier responsables de leur illustration etaient restes inconnus. Il s'est avere que parmi eux se trouvent aussi bien un manuscrit parisien d'une grande elegance , oeuvre d'un maitre repute, qu'un Livre d'Heures pittoresque et extremement rare illustre par une moniale alsacienne et destine a une nonne d'un Monastere suisse. Le corpus d'Einsiedeln comprend egalement un precieux et minuscule manuscrit flamand, ainsi qu'un Livre d'Heures "retouche" et transforme en Suisse au XVIe siecle a partir d'une ebauche abandonnee, realisee au nord de la France un siecle plus tot. Leur etudes nous a pose des problemes concernant leur datation, leur attribution et leur localisation, ainsi que la determnation du role que peut jouer un maitre au talent reconnu lors de l'illustration partielle ou totale d'un manuscrit modeste. Cette etude se propose de donner au lecteur la possibilite d'entrevoir quelques aspects de la piete du laic medieval par l'etude iconographique, liturgique et stylistique de ces douze Livres d'Heures realisees en France, dans les Flandres, dans le Rhin superieur ou en Italie, entre la fin du XIVe et le debut du XVe siecle. ‎A prized possession of the Cistercian convent of Marienbrunn in Rulle near Osnabruck in northern Germany was its richly illuminated gradual dating to c. 1300, which is of great significance in the history of medieval art for several reasons. With 52 historiated initials iconographically complex in their literary quotations from the liturgy, the manuscript ranks as one of the most lavishly decorated books of its type to survive. Painted in an elegant courtly Gothic style, it is ascribed in a prefatory inscription to the nun Gisela von Kerssenbrock, who wrote, notated, and decorated the manuscript "with golden letters and beautiful images." Such an encyclopedic listing of a scribe-artist's labors is unparalleled in medieval scribal colophons. The high quality of the miniatures ranks her among the most gifted women artists of the Middle Ages. Gisela is depicted in two self-portraits within the manuscript, in one of which she is leading the nuns of Rulle in singing the Christmas hymn, visual evidence that she was the choirmistress at this convent. The manuscript's images reflect the intellectual ambience of encloistered nuns who were steeped in the annual liturgical cycle of feasts with its associated bible readings, theological commentary, sermons, music, dramatic ritual, and artistic decoration. As it was used in the nuns' daily celebration of the mass, the book is an eloquent witness of the communal religious life of medieval women rather than their private meditations or mystical experiences.This study explores the imagery and texts associated with major feasts of the liturgical year and the novel ways in which music and text are woven into the artistic program of Gisela's manuscript. In particular, her book shows the seminal importance of the Easter celebration for convent life, as well over half of its illustrations are clustered in the Easter season; and the manuscript repeatedly gives artistic expression to the nuns' hopes of heaven. ‎Of all the Old Testament books, the Book of Job remains acutely contemporary today. Written between the 6th and 3rd c. The number of miniature illustrations included in these fifteen manuscripts, dating from the 9th to the 16th century, comes to more than 1800 of which 2/3 of the about 380 illustrated herein are previously unpublished manuscript images. The first section looks at the role that landscape imagery had in the hierarchy of book decoration, and how it responded to late medieval mnemonic systems and devotional practices. The second section is concerned with landscape within encyclopedic and allegorical manuscripts, and will analyze how artists constructed space to communicate specific lessons or ideas, for example to frame debates about the role of agricultural labor or to present the dynastic ambitions of the Burgundian court. ‎These three volumes catalogue the extensive corpus of mycological drawings in the Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo. Executed mostly in watercolour between 1625 and 1630 and depicting fungi native to Umbria and the environs of Rome, they constitute the first sustained attempt to survey all the larger fungi of a region, recording in detail the stages of their growth. Laden with notes on colour, smell, taste, weight, season and the locality in which the specimens had been found, the almost six hundred folios were commissioned by Federico Cesi (1585-1630), founder of Europe?s first scientific academy, the Accademia dei Lincei. They were acquired by Cassiano dal Pozzo after Cesi?s death and were greatly admired by those who saw them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thought to have been lost until their rediscovery in 1979 in the library of the Institut de France in Paris, the drawings are also remarkable for their pioneering use of the microscope, a novel instrument given to Cesi in 1624 by Galileo and used throughout the pages of these manuscripts to enhance the direct observation of nature. Also included are drawings of fungi commissioned by Cassiano and his brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, and an early set of copies of the Cesi originals in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Each drawing is reproduced in colour with accompanying text, and two introductory essays discuss the scientific investigations and collecting activities of Cesi and Cassiano and the importance of these drawings in the history of science and art.
