Elke compositorische beslissing wordt gemaakt in het moment, heel bewust of net impulsief. De beslissingen die Weyer maakt, hebben telkens een andere schaal en betekenis. Met energieke penseelstreken, druppels, vegen en schrappingen maakt ze een flux van vormen en lijnen. Elk schilderij is een documentatie van Weyers proces met verschillende verflagen, afschrapingen en overschilderingen. Met haar gebruik van levendige kleuren bewijst ze zichzelf ook als een sublieme colorist. De sterke, heldere kleuren tonen zichzelf dwingender en lenen zich het beste om een impuls te weergeven. Het belangrijkste is wat Anke Weyer zelf toelaat binnen haar proces; wat zichtbaar mag blijven en wat verborgen moet worden. Weyers manier van schilderen maakt het werk heel persoonlijk en onthullend. Ze toont fragmenten, mutaties en vergissingen die de menselijke natuur in zijn meest natuurlijke vorm aanraken. De titels van de werken zijn heel ambigu. Het zijn woorden, zinnen of afkortingen met hun eigen gevestigde betekenis die uit hun gebruikelijke context werden gehaald. In plaats van een beschrijving van het werk te geven, zijn de titels eerder een aanvulling op het geschilderd beeld. Dit zorgt ervoor dat er een open dialoog mogelijk is tussen het kunstwerk en de toeschouwer Weyers tekeningen in pastel stralen duidelijk dezelfde energie uit als haar schilderijen. De manier waarop ze de levendige kleuren, strakke lijnen en kleurvlakken aanbrengt op papier kan bijna als agressief worden ervaren. Naast het aanbrengen van de verschillende lijnen en vlakken, veegt ze ook doorheen de pastels met haar handen waarmee ze verschillende sporen en afdrukken nalaat op het papier. Ze werd geboren in Mons maar bouwde haar loopbaan uit in Brussel waar ze rond 1650 actief was. De kunstenares onderhield contacten met het hof van aartshertog Leopold-Wilhelm die vier van haar werken in zijn collectie had. Van haar hand zijn een dertigtal schilderijen en een tekening bekend. Meer dan een derde hiervan is voluit gesigneerd en gedateerd. Michaelina schilderde meesterlijke historiestukken, indringende portretten, ontwapenende genretaferelen en verstilde bloemstukken. Haar veelzijdigheid is zonder meer grensverleggend te noemen. Typisch voor haar oeuvre is de uitdagende thematiek, de virtuoze techniek en het grote formaat. Alle werken zijn ontstaan tussen 1643 en 1659. Haar meesterstuk is ongetwijfeld de De triomf van Bacchus in het Kunsthistorisches Museum in Wenen (doek, 270 x 354 cm, afb. 1). Michaelina Wautier verschijnt hier als een halfnaakte bacchante en kijkt als enige van de aanwezige figuren naar de toeschouwer. Meer dan tien levensgrote figuren trekken in een stoet voorbij. De manier waarop ze de mannelijke naakten heeft weergegeven, laat zien dat ze de kans kreeg om modellen naar het leven te tekenen, uniek voor vrouwen met artistieke ambitie in de vroegmoderne tijd. Een portrait historie met de heilige Agnes en de heilige Dorothea (afb. 2) is nu al een publiekslieveling geworden. Twee blozende meisjes poseren als twee jonge martelaressen in een intieme ruimte. Ze kijken niet naar elkaar maar zijn in gedachten verzonken en communiceren ongezien. Het portret dat ze schilderde van de Italiaanse jezuiet Martino Martini heeft haar reputatie pas goed gevestigd (afb. 3). Like so many artists from his generation, he became influenced by the Latem expressionism and was post expressionist in his early works. In the early fifties he experimented with geometric abstraction. After a few years his work became again figuratif. In his still lifes there is a great emphasis on colour and composition. In the following 10 years he laid the base for his later work. From 1960 on he devoted himself entirly to geomatric abstraction and in the end his work became monochrome. You can find his work his in the museums of Ghent, Brugge, Oostende, Rotterdam, Doornik and Brussels. There is a growing interest in his work. And this resulted in a catalogue raisonnee, written by the late Erik Pil and published by Ludion in 2007.
