From childhood he displayed an interest in art and drawing and was a prolific doodler, spending much time sketching scenes of ordinary life and the Belgium countryside. In 1889 he studied briefly at the Tekenacademie in Bruges. His early work, already Symbolist in style was informed by his readings of writers such as Friedrich Nietzsche and Maurice Maeterlinck. From February 1903 to January 1904 he worked for Edmond Deman in Brussels, a publisher of symbolist writers, whose work Spilliaert was to illustrate. In 1904 Spilliaert stayed in Paris, where he was on the fringe of Picasso's circle and discovered the work of Munch and Toulouse-Lautrec, whose influences he acknowledged. He continued to spend most winters in Paris to keep in touch with the city's cultural life. Although often associated with the key figures of Belgian Symbolism, L on Spilliaert in fact demonstrated a peculiarly individual style. Born in Ostend, he worked there for most of his career. An introvert and insomniac who suffered from poor health as a young man, Spilliaert wandered the night-time streets of the North Sea resort, creating mysterious and highly atmospheric depictions of its dark docks, beaches and promenades. Almost entirely self-taught, he drew influence from such painters as Odilon Redon and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, as well as the writers Edgar Allan Poe and Friedrich Nietzsche. This book brings together over a hundred works from international collections, including a series of haunting self-portraits that Spilliaert created in his twenties. Few explanations can accommodate the full daring and frenzy of such a painting which chaotic composition and barbaric style seem revolutionary, and look far beyond the early twentieth century. Since the purchase of the work in 1987 by the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), The Entry has acquired cult status. Heck plaatst ze in een bijzondere enscenering die de bezoeker uitnodigt om niet alleen de ogen te gebruiken, maar ook het lichaam, de herinnering en het onderbewustzijn. Hauruck d?Orange laat goed zien hoe Heck diverse media en beeldtalen naast en door elkaar gebruikt, vol verwijzingen naar zowel de kunstgeschiedenis en literatuur als folklore, populaire cultuur en autobiografie. De film speelt op humoristische wijze met clich s uit het detective-genre en vertegenwoordigt een bepaalde democratische do it yourself mentaliteit. Dit blijkt ook uit het enorme handgemaakte ?manifest? dat de bezoeker verwelkomt bij binnenkomst in GEM: alles mag en niets is wat het lijkt. Metamorfose Het ?Hauruck? uit de tentoonstellingstitel Hauruck d?Orange is een veelvoorkomend woord in Hecks schilderijen. Het is Duitse spreektaal voor een aansporing: komaan! ?Orange? refereert daarbij natuurlijk aan de nationale kleur van het land waar zij zichzelf met deze tentoonstelling op de kaart zet. In de tentoonstellingsruimte spelen drie andere kleuren de hoofdrol. Samen vormen ze een ?verwassen? versie van de Duitse en Belgische vlag, wat voor Heck verwijst naar het vervagen van identiteit. Het idee van metamorfose ? het overgaan van het een in het ander ? komt vaker terug in haar werk, bijvoorbeeld in tweekoppige wezens of hybride mensfiguren. Kati Heck woont en werkt in Pulle, Belgi . Ze volgde de opleiding schilderen aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen. And yet, this had never been observed before the start of the conservation treatment. By removing the overpaint, the tonal richness and the coherent rendering of light and space once again came to the fore. Especially the suggestion of volumes and the spaciousness of the ensemble gained strength because of the virtuoso play of deep shadows and bright light accents, and not in the least because of the surprising trompe-l'oeil effect of the frames conceived as a stone framework. Or to put it in the words of the comments of one of the experts, dr. Maryan Ainsworth: The paintings live and breathe again in the time of the Van Eyck brothers. The sharp observation skills, the quick, accurate execution, the knowledge, curiosity and ingenuity about all the things that are depicted, are now unveiled after centuries. The profit for the knowledge of and further research into the essence of Eyckian aesthetics is considerable. And finally there is the discovery that the much-discussed quatrain was applied simultaneously with the polychromy of the frames: a real 'coup de foudre' in the discourse of the current art-historical research! The subtleties of the Eyckian technique could also be mapped out in more detail. How the Van Eycks managed to keep the final result and the desired effect in mind during every phase of the execution, from imprimatura to finishing touch. The artists made a statement about the art of painting, giving ?technique? as such a new prominence. The Ghent Altarpiece may be understood at some point as a major showpiece for a highly sophisticated pictorial technique. We hope that this publication of the results of the research and conservation campaign on the exterior of the altarpiece can help future researchers to ask better questions. ISBN 9789462302501.‎ ‎Deze uitgebreide en gedetailleerde levensbeschrijving van de Belgische kunstenaar James Ensor is opgevat als een biografische kroniek, afgewisseld met fragmenten van brieven aan en van Ensor en met teksten uit kranten en tijdschriften. Via schitterende reproducties van een groot aantal meesterwerken ontdekt de lezer het oeuvre van de kunstenaar en diens boeiende artistieke ontwikkeling. Dankzij het onderzoek dat de auteur van deze biografie en het Ensorcomit in de voorbije jaren verricht hebben, werd over het leven van de kunstenaar meer bekend. De studie van onuitgegeven brieven leverde nieuwe gegevens op. Zo vernemen we bijvoorbeeld dat Ensors vader begin 1885 in een Oostends caf door twee jongelui werd gemolesteerd en daarbij zware verwondingen opliep. Het voorval liet bij Ensor diepe sporen na. In 1892 bestelde de kunstenaar in Duitsland een honderdtal maskers, die hij in zijn atelier ophing en waar ze een pakkend effect hadden. De schilder maakte graag grapjes met de zoon van zijn Brusselse vrienden Ernest en Mariette Rousseau, en putte creatieve inspiratie uit enkele foto?s van hun spelletjes en zotternijen. Ensor bezat ook literair talent. In 1888 beschreef hij in een brief aan de jonge Ernest Rousseau een droom, een groteske fantasie die van zijn wervelende geest getuigt. Het feitenmateriaal in deze biografie stemt overeen met de gegevens in de oeuvrecatalogus, die door dezelfde auteur werd samengesteld (Mercatorfonds 2009). Onder meer de titels van de werken werden aan deze catalogue raisonn ontleend. De belangstelling voor de kunstenaar en zijn uitzonderlijke oeuvre zal ongetwijfeld nog toenemen naar aanleiding van de openstelling, in 2020, van het vernieuwde James Ensorhuis in Oostende. De artistieke erfenis van James Ensor is enorm rijk en gevarieerd. Auteur Xavier Tricot zegt daar zelf over: ?Reeds meer dan dertig jaar verdiep ik mij in het werk en de persoonlijkheid van Ensor en nog altijd blijven zijn ongelofelijke verbeeldingskracht en stilistische bravoure me verwonderen en verrassen.
