Bibliography of King's publications. Synoptic Index. When Congress established the United States Geological Survey in 1878 it was King who was put in charge. King initiated the practice of using Hoffmann's contour lines to denote topography on maps and was among the first to make extensive use of the laboratory to solve geophysical problems. In addition to his many scientific contributions "from early youth King had shown literary qualities of a high order and it has always been a source of regret among his friends that he left so little evidence of it. A series of sketches appearing first in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY and afterward in book form under the caption of MOUNTAINEERING IN THE SIERRA NEVADA 1872 and his HELMET OF MAMBRINO in the form of a letter to his friend `Don Horacio' Horace F. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I his contributions were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947 he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics.". This is from the libraries of and bears the tiny ink stamps of both Henry Stephens Washington 1867-1934 and later Robert B. Sosman. In his tribute to Washington available online Charles Milton notes that Washington was "one of the most eminent members" of the National Academy of Sciences and fluent in 10 languages. Also discussed are his work at the Carnegie Institution Geophysical Laboratory as vice-president of the Geological Society of America and his PROFESSIONAL PAPER 99 that is "known to every geologist in the world." A geophysicist and physical chemist Robert Browning Sosman authored THE PHASES OF SILICA 1965 New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press. Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I his contributions were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947 he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics.".
