In 1950 bezoeken ze samen de Bi nnale van Veneti . Als burgemeester van Antwerpen wil Craeybeckx werken aankopen voor het Middelheimmuseum, dat in 1951 zijn deuren opent. Vanbeselaere zou graag, in navolging van andere Europese musea, hedendaagse kunst presenteren in het KMSKA, waar hij hoofdconservator is. De Bi nnale van Veneti wijst Craeybeckx en Vanbeselaere de weg voor beide museumcollecties. Vanaf het openingsjaar van het Middelheimmuseum worden in het park Bi nnales georganiseerd, waar het KMSKA mettertijd een hele reeks sculpturen van klein formaat verwerft. In Recall Sculpture staan deze kleinsculpturen uit de jaren 1950 tot 1970 centraal. Werken die de voorbode zijn van de huidige hedendaagse kunst. De sculpturen van Consagra, Pomodoro, Scha r, Heiliger, Marini en vele anderen konden geen beter onderkomen vinden dan in het Middelheimmuseum. He was presented as a kinetic artist because his works incorporate movement, but this slow, sometimes barely perceptible movement allowed him to sow doubt in the minds of his viewers. If the spectator is to believe his own eyes, he must stand perfectly still, and attentive to movements that will undermine the superficial appearance of a work at rest. Movement is not the fundamental message of a work that transmits no signs, and makes no grand gestures. ‎Hans Memling's God the Father with Singing and Music-making Angels formed the upper register of an enormous polyptych painted for the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria la Real in Najera, Spain. The three large panel paintings are undoubtedly among the most monumental works of early Netherlandish painting. Since 1895 they have belonged to the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA), where a team of conservators and scholars have devoted themselves in recent years to their complex conservation. To mark the completion of this project, the KMSKA organized a symposium in March 2017 in cooperation with the University of Antwerp. This latest volume in the Me Fecit series publishes the contributions presented on that occasion. Their wide-ranging themes include the commissioning and iconography of the panels, their acquisition by the museum, the depicted vestments and what the work has to tell us about fifteenth-century musical practice. Close attention is paid to technical aspects such as the materials and the painting technique used for the panels, Memling's underdrawing, the frames, and the conservation treatment - not least the oxalate-containing layer that posed the greatest challenge. There is a musical aspect to the project too: precise replicas have been made of the depicted instruments, which were then used to perform fifteenth-century compositions with playing techniques inferred from the paintings. ‎This collection of essays examines diverse facets of the cultural patronage and collecting of Mary of Hungary. Mary of Hungary?s extensive artistic patronage and the collections she formed of an array of artworks, objects and books were by no means an isolated phenomenon within the Habsburg dynasty. On the contrary, the Regent of the Netherlands and loyal adviser to her brother, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, emulated the examples of the Habsburg women who preceded her, and in turn provided an exemplar for those that came after. She continued the traditions, trends and practices her ancestors and peers had established, which had been initiated by female members of the Trast mara dynasty, most notably Isabel of Castile This collection of essays examines the cultural patronage of Mary of Hungary in the light of her multiple identities: a humanist-trained patron of the arts; a Habsburg princess closely implicated in the visual construction and projection of Charles V's political identity across the alliances and divisions of early modern Europe; and a female regent bound by the imperial, dynastic and political ideologies cultivated by the sixteenth-century Habsburg monarchs. Beyond forming one of the most important art collections of the European Renaissance and playing a prominent role in the patronage of the artists she received under her protection, Mary used art to construct an image of herself that undeniably contributed to the consolidation and dissemination of both her political legitimacy and that of her dynasty among the courts of Europe.‎
