The Manual of Horticulture 58th Edition 62nd Year Kelway's Manual
Langport: Kelway 1913. RARE. One of the most lavish of nursery catalogues. This volume was dedicated to Gertrude Jekyll and contains a short printed preface by her. James Kelway was born in 1815 and became a gardener like his father William. At the age of 18 James was appointed as Head Gardener on the Dillington estate near Ilminster which was being revamped by its new owner James Lee Lee. Over the next 17 years James learned not only how to manage a large garden but also took advantage of the walled gardens and large greenhouses to develop his love of hybridising new varieties of plants. When he moved to Langport in 1851 he was already an experienced horticulturist. He started with a piece of land of less than two acres but over the next fifty years he built up a nursery business with over 200 acres of its own and many more leased from local farmers. He established Kelways with a world wide reputation for both vegetables and flowers. His first love was the gladiolus but he also worked on other herbaceous plants such as delphiniums pyrethrums and of course peonies which were to become Kelways flagship product. His son William and grandson James continued his work into the 20th century and although the business was hard hit by the two world wars it has survived and thrived to this day. Kelways issued their most impressive catalogues called Manuals of Horticulture between the 1890s and the outbreak of the First World War. These were like modern-day gardening encyclopedias full of horticultural advice articles from gardening publications photographs and of course their seeds and plants for sale. Lacaita was a notable gentleman botanist who collected many plants. He developed a fine garden at Selham West Sussex during which he no doubt developed contact with the Ingwersens who inherited some of his library. A flora of Styria - Central Austria. Animals are important components of any ecosystem and it is impossible to describe structure and functioning of the Fennoscandian tundra ecosystems without including this part of the system. However the strong diversity between functionally highly different fauna groups makes it impossible to study all groups in great detail with the funds and expertise available in Fennoscandia. Relatively few productivity studies were carried out on animals in Fenno scandian tundra regions before the IBP projects started in 1969-1970. Within IBP more fauna groups have been investigated in the Norwegian tundra project than in the other countries due to better financial support. Even in Norway however only a limited number of invertebrate and vertebrate taxons is studied. General lack of information on the same animals in various parts of the Fennoscandian tundra makes it more difficult to present structural and functional comparisons of fauna for the whole region than in plants and microorganisms see Part 1 of Fennoscandian Tundra Ecosystems. McPhail was gardener to Lord Hawkesbury at Addiscombe Place in Surrey. The brick frame was of his own design and a notable feature of this book is the detailed weather observations covering a complete year together with the precise treatment given to the plants on each day. The frame proved immensely popular and within 40 years Rogers 1839 was to state " an excellent invention that has certainly rendered the forcing of this vegetable more simple.there are few gentleman's gardens and few principal market gardens without them". . Paxton was an English gardener architect engineer and Member of Parliament best known for designing the Crystal Palace and for cultivating the Cavendish banana the most consumed banana in the Western world. Edinburgh and London: John Murray 1828. Second edition greatly improved and enlarged. Illustrated with six engraved plates octavo pp xxxviii 527 sadly the plates are heavily foxed which has also affected the neighbouring page howver the remainder of the text is remarkably clean and very tight and sound; bound in a contemporary half calf rubbed rebacked sympathetically with a new calf spine. lightly tipped-in at the first page is a small advertisement leaf warning of 'sundry ignorant and uneducated persons' attempting to pass themselves off as having been trained by Henry Steuart - this seems to be scarce. Steuart 1759 - 1836 was a Scottish landowner agricultural improver soldier and classical scholar. Owing to bad health Steuart abandoned most of his literary work and experiments in arboriculture became the chief interest of his life. In September 1823 a deputation from the Highland and Agricultural Society which included Sir Walter Scott and Lords Belhaven and Corehouse visited Allanton and reported on the improvements effected there by Steuart's system of transplanting large trees. Though he had had to contend with an unfavourable soil and an exposed position he attained at no extraordinary expense the power so long desired of anticipating the slow progress of vegetation and accomplishing within two or three seasons those desirable changes in the face of nature which he who plants in early youth can in ordinary cases only hope to witness in advanced life. From this time Steuart frequently corresponded with Sir Walter who imitated several of Steuart's experiments at Abbotsford. When in 1828 Steuart published this work Scott reviewed it enthusiastically in the Quarterly March. When Scott visited Allanton in January 1829 in company with Lockhart he noted in his journal: Sir Henry is a sad coxcomb and lifted beyond the solid earth by the effect of his book's success. But the book well deserves it. The book was also favourably reviewed by Southwood Smith in the Westminster Review by Professor Wilson Christopher North in Blackwood's Magazine April 1828 and in the Edinburgh Review March 1829. It had a large circulation in America. In his preface to the second edition Steuart claims to have made the first attempt to apply the principles of physiology to practical arboriculture and to have created the new science of phytology. Bound in possibly original marbled paper and more recent half calf slightly worn. Soulsby 437. The frontispiece is often lacking but the one we have here is not the usual frontispiece ! It is possibly a little smaller than the page size though this is not certain as it has been repaired and mounted; the offsetting to the title page which is obviously of some antiquity is definitely from the plate currently bound in. So - is it a variant or has it been added by a previous owner Interestingly I can only find one copy of this particular image online in the Wellcome Collection R. Burgess Portraits of doctors & scientists in the Wellcome Institute London 1973 no. 1778.10 ; listed as by Gustav Lundberg. It is "the first textbook of descriptive systematic botany and botanical Latin". It also contains Linnaeus's first published description of his binomial nomenclature. Philosophia Botanica represents a maturing of Linnaeus's thinking on botany and its theoretical foundations being an elaboration of ideas first published in his Fundamenta Botanica 1736 and Critica Botanica 1737 and set out in a similar way as a series of stark and uncompromising principles aphorismen. Small octavo pp xxviiii 228 a folding chart at the rear a little stained light age-toning and foxing with 7 woodcut chapter heads and tail-pieces the hinge at the title page cracking slightly but still perfectly sound bound in later green cloth. RARE. From the library of the nurseryman Will Ingwersen with his bookplate on the front endpaper. The folding chart lists the number of plants which can be grown in an acre either Scots or English. The title page states that Hall was late gardener and nurseryman to the Hon. Family of Cromarty. The letters V.D.M.E.D. appear after his name. Apart from that bleak information I can find nothing further on the author. The intriguing thing is that over half the book is devoted to catalogues of florists' flowers which is not mentioned in the title. These were obviously for sale but prices are not given. Nor are there descriptions but the extent of the lists makes them invaluable for cultivar names. Hyacinths Tulips Ranunculus Anenomes Bulbous Iris Auriculas Carnations Pinks finishing with evergreen and flowering shrubs and a few seeds. Hyacinths by no means the longest list contains over 300 cultivar names alone. Whilst it is perhaps not surprising that Harman Payne failed to spot this book for his Florist's Bibliography it is strange that it also evaded the eagle eye of Ray Desmond who fails to mentiong the author in his Dictionary. Illustrated with a frontispiece and nine engraved plates of which eight are folding Apparently lacking one plate small octavo pp iv xxxv i 43iii 4 35-309 vii much of the text rather browned and age-toned a fair few signs of use though all very tight the first fifty pages or so have a fair anount of pencil notes and underlinings see illustration with a little more on pages 179-199 contemporary calf rubbed and cracked but soundrebacked with a fairly recent calf spine raised bands new endpapers apparently by Bayntuns. The folding plates are rather worn and creased occasionally frayed at the margins; two have old sellotape repairs and one is rather badly torn across but without loss. The pagination is erratic and appears incorrect but it actuall ties in exactly with the contents pages at the rear. In this copy "An advertisement of J. Evelyn Esq." as mentioned by Blanche Henrey is bound immediately after the title page. LACKING ONE PLATE. Quintinie was in charge of the royal fruit and vegetable gardens under Louis XV. "His book shows his deep knowledge of every aspect of kitchen gardening" - Taylor. George London and Henry Wise were garden designers and nurserymen and formed one of the most important garden design practices in the history of British gardening. The Thirkleby Park library copy with book label on the front endpaper and Thomas Frankland's stamped signature on the verso of all the title pages. Sir Thomas Frankland was a notable botanist. Illustrated with a folding plate at the rear small octavo pp xiv 175 i age-toned endpapers unevenly browned but otherwise clean and sound internally contemporary calf rather worn and bleached rebacked at some point with the original spine laid down the corners repaired probably at the same time all still tight and sound. An early signature on the front endpaper - S. Smith Prior Park 1784. Richard Mead 1673 - 1754 was an English physician. His work "A Short Discourse concerning Pestilential Contagion and the Method to be used to prevent it "1720 was of historic importance in the understanding of transmissible diseases. The present work on poisons "fully displayed his commitment to Pitcairne's style of iatromechanics stating that mathematical learning would soon distinguish a physician from a quack. His most original contribution was his discussion of venomous snakes which had been instigated by his studies with Paul Hermann at Leiden. Mead dissected several vipers and accurately described the mechanism of the fang and its operation. He also confirmed Galen's observation that a puncture wound was necessary for the venom to take effect in part by swallowing a sample of venom without ill effect - ODNB". The other poisons and antidotes discussed cover tarantulas and rabid dogs through to poisonous minerals and plants opium and noxious vapours. First Edition. Full Leather. Good. Greenwood, Colonel George
The Tree-Lifter; or a New method of Transplanting Forest Trees

Illustrated with a stunning tinted lithograph frontispiece two folding plates of ring growth octavo pp x 235 24 page publisher's catalogue edges uncut slight age-toning but otherwise very clean internally the front hi nge is slightly weak and is exposed for about 40mm at the top original green cloth with only slight signs of wear the spine head slightly pulled. A work that seems little-known as indeed is the author within horticultural circles. Greenwood had an estate in Hampshire at Brookwood Brockwood House near Bramdean. The tree-lifter was the Colonels invention for transplanting trees up to 30 feet in height with their ball of earth intact a feat the apparatus apparently made possible for a single individual to do at a rate of one tree per day. The somewhat aptly-named Colonel Greenwood was very enthusiastic about the importance of trees to the landscape and the first edition was published in 1844. Colonel Greenwood is said to have excavated local archaeological sites and was a keen geologist referred to as the father of subaerialism ascribing the greater inequalities in the earths surface to atmospheric influences. He published a further book in 1857 entitled Rain and Rivers. His main thesis was the supremacy of rainwash as an agent of land sculpture and the realtive unimportance of streams and rivers. It was said in his obituary that 'had he fallen amongst geologists in early life instead of amongst thoroughbreds he would doubtless have occupied a leading place among men of science'. He does not appear in Hadfield's History of British Gardening nor more surprisingly in Desmond's Dictionary. Third edition. Cloth. Good. Longmans Green & Co. Hardcover

Hubbard with his signature. RARE. Hubbard was the foremost grass taxonomist of the twentieth century. Wedwood was the son of M.L. Wedgewood with whom he collected until his death during the First World War at Gallipoli aged just 22. M.L. Wedgwood created a herbarium of British plants at Marlborough College MBH as a permanent memorial to her son. The second edition was edited by Albrecht von Haller who added the four appendices as well as descriptions of 70 new plants. He was employed at a number of estates in Scotland and improved the design and layout of gardens and glasshouses. He set off by way of Rome and Naples to Ceylon thence overland from Tuticorin to Lahore. He continued to Calcutta and on to the Straits Settlements. In Penang he visited the Botanic Gardens whose curator Charles Curtis was formerly employed by James Veitch & Sons as a plant collector before moving on to Singapore where he visited the Botanic Gardens. He then visited Johore before returning to Singapore in February 1892 when he climbed Bukit Timah the highest point on the island with Walter Fox curator of the Gardens. He then travelled to Buitenzorg West Java where he visited the Botanical Gardens. He also explored the crater of Kawah Papandajan volcano and visited Lake Bagendit near Garoet. His travels then took him to Japan where he met Charles Sprague Sargent of the Arnold Arboretum and they undertook a joint plant collecting expedition including ascending the Hakkoda Mountains together. After visiting Korea he reached Australia in 1893. However he found Australia disappointing and wrote that it was easier to collect seed in Japan where there was cheap labour; in Australia "no one will help". He complained that the seeds of many plants "were so tiny he did not know if he was collecting seed or dust". He sent to Kew a collection of dried specimens of 250 species from Western Australia. Ten of these are etched views of gardens or features of garden scenery one of them named as a view of Keszthely. The other ten are lithographed plans two facing each other between pp. 54 and 55 uncoloured and eight including two double-page spreads mounted on stubs with beige and green tint. Among these are plans of the Buxton Pavilion grounds Stoke Cemetery Keszthely and Yeaton Peverey. Milner succeeded his father Edward Milner as director of the Crystal Palace School of Gardening for the prospectus of which see Gardeners' Chronicle 2 April 1881 p. 437. It has been inferred by some that some of the content is based on Edward Milner's works as well as H.E.
