He Discovered A Correlation Between Tree Rings And The Sunspot Cycle And Founded The Discipline Of Dendrochronology Which Is A Method Of Dating Wood By Analyzing The Growth Ring Pattern. He Started His Discoveries In This Field In 1894 When He Was Working At The Lowell Observatory. During This Time He Was An Assistant To Percival Lowell But Fell Out With Him When His Experiments Made Him Doubt The Existence Of Artificial "Canals" On Mars And Visible Spokes On Venus. After Douglass's Analysis Of Results From The Third Beam Expedition In 1929 For The First Time In History Dates Could Be Assigned To Southwestern Ruins With Certainty. Cliff Dwelling At Tsegi Canyon Mesa Verde And Canyon De Chelly Dated Back To The 13Th Century. It Was Determined That Aztec Ruin Was Constructed During A Period Ranging From 1111 To 1120. Pueblo Bonito Was Found To Be Built In The Latter Portion Of The 11Th Century. Douglass Returned To The University Of Arizona Where He Became The First Person To Formally Teach Classes In Dendrochronology. In 1937 Douglass Established The Laboratory Of Tree-Ring Research At The University Of Arizona. The A.E. Douglass Papers Are Held At The University Of Arizona Special Collections Library.Douglass Was Elected To The American Philosophical Society In 1941. He Contributed A Technique For The Accurate Detection Of Very Small Amounts Of Carbon Dioxide Produced During Metabolic Activities Using Barium Hydroxide. Tashiro Was Born In Kagoshima Prefecture And Moved To The Us In 1901. He Studied At The University Of Chicago Receiving A B.S. 1909 And A Ph.D. 1912. He Worked As An Associate In Physiological Chemistry And Became An Assistant Professor In 1918. The Next Year He Moved To The University Of Cincinnati And In 1923 He Received A Medical Degree From Kyoto University For Work On The Metabolism Of Nerve Fibres. This Was To Be A Major Tool For Studies In Animal Physiology. Apart From Detection Of Carbon Dioxide And Ammonia Production With The Use Of The So-Called Tashiro's Indicator He Also Examined The Possibility Of Assays For Acetylcholine. The Author's Personal Copies No Duplicates Of His Nineteenth Century Works On Paleontology And Related Areas Of Biology 127 Of His Published Writings Including Original Offprints Extracts Title Pages Manuscripts And Notes In German Or English With A Few Clippings And Photographs Laid In Loosely. Three Volumes Dark Brown Pebbled Cloth Over Brown Patterned Boards. Bindings Worn And Frayed Material Should Be Professionally Rebound With Archival Materials. His Obituary In The American Naturalist Sept 1898 Pp 717-718 Refers To A Total Output Of 143 Papers Being Reported By His Brother Which Possibly Includes Reprints And Translations As He Wrote In Both German And English And This Collection Appears Complete. Baur Was Last A Professor At The University Of Chicago 1892 -1898. Baur Wrote Extensively On Various Paleontological Topics. He Also Built On The Late Nineteenth Century Theory Of Evolution And Wrote Extensively On His Idea That Changes In Morphology Might Be Brought Out By A Change In Environment Including Nutrition Etc. Such That These Changed Characteristics Would Persist In Successive Generations So Long As The Changed Conditions Persisted For Which There Is Now Some Evidence For At Least Three Generations. He Cited Extensively To Personal Observations And Reports From Others. His Work Differs From Weizmann Etc. In That He Maintained That Changes In Environment Could Bring Out Changes In Morphology Without Changes In The Genetic Material Such Changes Persisting In Successive Generations When The Environmental Changes Also Persisted. In One Such 1891 Paper He Concludes With A Citation To Darwin's Letter To Wagner: "In My Opinion The Greatest Error Which I Have Committed Has Been Not Allowing Sufficient Weight To The Direct Action Of The Environment - I.E. Food Climate Etc. -Independently Of Natural Selection." Although Now Dismissed Some Because Of His Neo-Lamarckian Ideas His Departures From Rigorous Scientific Evidence In Genetics Is Perhaps Less Serious Than The Acceptance And Promotion Of The Ideas Of "Phlogiston" By Important Earlier Chemists And Of "Ether" By His Contemporaries Among Important Physicists; And The Emphasis Of The Neo-Lamarckians On Environmental Nutritional And Physiological Factors Is More In Keeping With Modern Understanding Of Individual Development Than The Emphasis Upon Purely Genetic Evolution Which Treats Only Classes Of Individuals By Arbitrary Groupings Into Classes Of Individuals . Charles Francis Saunders 1859-1941 was born to Quaker parents in Bucks County Pennsylvania. He and his first wife Elisabeth Hallowell Saunders d. 1910 were both avid naturalists; Charles began publishing essays on botany as early as the 1890s. Charles and Elisabeth also collaborated on a number of publications he as author she as illustrator. After a honeymoon trip to California and the Southwest in 1902 the couple moved permanently to California in 1906 and settled in a Craftsman bungalow on North Lake Avenue in Pasadena where Charles devoted himself full time to writing. He eventually published more than a dozen books inspired by California and the Southwest. Both Charles and Elisabeth were amateur photographers and many of their photographs were used to illustrate Saunders' books The Indians of the Terraced Houses 1912 and Under the Sky in California 1913. In 1921 Saunders married Mira Barrett Culin d. 1968 whom he had met at the Pasadena Garden Club. Also a writer Mira shared Saunders' interest in gardens botany and photography. For many years Mira published articles on Pasadena gardens parks and trees in the Pasadena Star News for which she took dozens of photographs. First with Elisabeth and then with Mira Saunders travelled extensively throughout California and the Southwest photographing all of the California Missions the regions' natural wonders Native Americans and flora among other things.
