This diversity is due in part to the highland ranges of the Fouta Djalon and Loma-Man and Nimba mountains. This also contains the signature of Joannes Fraser and many neat manuscript annotations and corrections throughout the text; some place names are underlined lightly in red ink on the map also. Bound in contemporary quarter leather and paper-covered boards the spine with raised bands and gilt decoration marbled endpapers. The boards are rubbed at the top and bottom margins with a little loss of the surface. The spine is faded and slightly rubbed. The rear free endpaper is missing a corner. A presentation inscription on the title page to 'Monsieur Prevost' signed by the author. From there it went to the French botanist Edmond Bonnet with his small Bibliotheque book label on the front endpaper. From there it moved to the library of the American zoologist Charles Atwood Kofoid with his attractive bookplate and accession numbe of C8999. A scarce book and a very desirable provenance. . First and only edition illustrated with six engraved plates drawn by the author slim octavo pp xx 100 a little foxing marking and age-toning but overall very sound internally original boards a later but still early cloth spine unlettered the binding again slightly worn but sound. With the book label of the physician and botanist Thomas Bell Salter. Of the utmost rarity. At the age of 19 Lindley was taken under the wing of William Jackson Hooker who at that time was still living in Halesworth before his move the following year to Glasgow. Lindley was impressed with a book he found in Hooker's extensive botanical library - Richard's "Demonstrations botaniques ou Analyse du Fruit considere en general" of 1808. He translated the work into English working for three days non-stop. When published it included six plates from Lindley's original drawings. The title page claims it includes the author's latest corrections and Stearn points out that the preface rejects Linnaeus' system of classification in favour of the the natural orders of Jussieu. This is the first book and the first published illustrations of the "father of modern orchidology" - one of the most importand and dominant figures of Victorian botany. First Edition. Boards. Good. Twenty-five years later it attracted the sarcasm of William Robinson. This is the true first edition of 1845. There was a re-issue around fifteen years later - this is distinguishable only in the shape and design of the gilt wreath on the upper cover. This may well be a special subscriber's copy as it contains pages xviii - xxii and the errata page which are not always present; it also has the text printed on the verso of each page only so there are 125 blank pages for notes; most copies have pages paginated to 134. .
