L'acculturation du monde rural aux 16e et 17e siècles », p. 159-261), cherchent à élucider «la furie sanguinaire des chasseurs de sorciers ». Plus que la sorcière – ou le sorcier – et son rôle, les auteurs démontent, chacun pour sa région, les complexes réseaux de causalité qui ont provoqué la définition du crime de sorcellerie, les dénonciations, les aveux, les exécutions. Partout la population, des villageois aux princes, s'est révélée complice de la justice, acharnée à dénoncer, à témoigner à charge, anxieuse de se démarquer des accusés, satisfaite de se purifier par la cérémonie expiatoire de l'exécution publique. La chasse aux sorcières est un phénomène de réaction collective à une situation instable et angoissante. Au Luxembourg, les guerres, la peste, le réveil religieux et les ordonnances judiciaires servirent de catalyseur à un malaise général. Plus inattendu peut-être est l'essai de W. Frithoff (« Prophétie et société dans les Provinces-Unies aux 17e et 18e siècles », p. 265-362) qui analyse le phénomène prophétique chez un des peuples les plus alphabétisés de l'Europe moderne à travers deux crises : celle de la guerre de Hollande (1672) et celle marquée par la panique de 1734... L'ensemble du livre évoque ainsi la «majorité silencieuse». Silencieuse jusqu'au moment où, sous la pression de mutations et d'événements qui remettent en cause l'équilibre de la société, cette majorité parle, vaticine, dénonce et, dans les flammes où brûlent les sorcières (ou les livres ou les juifs), essaie d'anéantir sa propre angoisse."
