Philadelphia: Printed and Published by Merrihew & Gunn 1837. First edition. Boards soiled and spotted and the edges rubbed; spine split nearly the length of the joint and front board loose; some light foxing throughout; a good sound copy only. 12mo original rose linen spine printed drab boards 84 pages. Poe enthusiast Joseph Jackson was fresh off his triumphant 1920 attribution to Poe of the uncommon pseudonymous anti-Dickens English Notes Boston 1842 by "Quarles Quickens" when in Jackson's own words "the publicity given that discovery set a good many booksellers delving for copies. One Philadelphia bookseller who had not been fortunate enough to uncover a copy . . . did run across an anonymous little book which seemed to him to have a Poesque touch although he could not exactly explain why he was thus impressed. He had no knowledge of the copy which came into his possession but when I was looking over his stock he handed it to me with the remark: 'This looks as if it was written by Poe.'" From this characteristic bookseller remark--a certain offhand scholarly optimism cloaked in the guise of expertise with enough of modesty to serve as a disclaimer and nothing so vulgar here as the mention of a profit--there of course soon burst a moderate boom for this title. In the foreword to the new edition of the Philosophy of Animal Magnetism Philadelphia 1928 which inevitably followed Jackson makes a show of professing a suitably demure initial skepticism before launching into a series of confident assertions regarding Poe's identity as the author--Poe must have visited Philadelphia in 1837 as he had nothing else much better to do; the address of the printers in Carter's Alley puts them on the same block as the editor Samuel Atkinson which "would suggest that Poe had called on Atkinson and that the latter had referred him to the printers as likely to publish the book;" the use of italics and small capitals for emphasis is particularly characteristic of Poe "It is true that his publishers in later years dispensed with the use of small capitals but the printers of 'Animal Magnetism' Merrihew and Gunn Philadelphia were a new firm and did not remain long in business. They evidently followed the author's copy literally"; the appearance of the word "Literati" in the dedication to the receptive mind inevitably suggests Poe etc. etc. Jackson's case was sufficiently convincing to collector J. K. Lilly who reportedly paid $2500 for a copy of the first edition of The Philosophy of Animal Magnetism and--given the well-known difficulties of proving a negative allied to the book trade's understandable reluctance to give up a profitable attribution--later bibliographers have seemed equivocal about showing Jackson's claims the door. BAL vol. 7 page 150 notes "Jackson attributes this piece . . . to Poe" thus leaving outside the Poe canon while bibliographer of animal magnetism Adam Crabtree remarks "Although there is no general agreement on the matter this book has been attributed to Edgar Allan Poe." Scribner in 1941 offered a copy of the first edition for the then-substantial sum of $175 under the fig leaf of "Attributed by some authorities to the pen of Poe." Only Merle Johnson seems to have sufficient temerity to note as early as 1936 that this title "is now definitely established as not the work of Poe." All this having been said still an interesting early American work on the subject including instructions on how to induce magnetic somnambulism. Crabtree 385. XXXIV 178 1 -Verbesserungen pp. � The scarce first edition on Karl Schelling's rare work on "Life and its Appearance".<br><br>Karl Eberhard Schelling 1783-1854 was the younger brother of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling 1775-1854 together with Fichte and Hegel the central thinker of German Idealism. <br><br>Karl Schelling was a trained physician who studied in Jena and there attended some of Hegel's lectures 1801-2. He later settled in Stuttgart 1805 as a general practicioner where he wrote his main though now forgotten main work "�ber das Leben und seine Erscheinung". In a letter to Hegel F.W.v. Schelling suggests him to read an article by his brother the physician concerning animal magnetism in Jahrb�cher f�r Medizin als Wissenschaft 1807 and it is this topic that is developed in his "On Life and the Appearance of it". Karl Schelling here advances a theory of life that involves a World Soul in which induvidual souls participate. His theories of aether sleep and death bear many resemblances to Hegel's philosophy of spirit.<br><br>It is also Karl Schelling who treats Hegel's sister Christianne when she falls ill and it is likely that the treatments which he is said to have undertaken for free involved "magnetic" therapy. Hegel himself was very interested in animal magnetism as his Philosophy of nature also bears witness to. There is no doubt about the fact that Hegel was quite impressed and intrigued with Karl Schelling's now scarcely known but interesting work. hardcover

He decided that the effect was electrical and that its ends was carrying charges of opposite sign much as soft iron is magnetized by a lodestone. This paper is a forerunner of his "Tentamen Theoriae electricitatis et magnetismi" - published 1759 and one of the most original and important books in the history of electricity. It is the first reasoned fruitful exposition of electrical phenomena based on action-at-a-distance.<br><br>"Aepinus� first reseraches on the thermoelectric properties of this stone Tourmalin which was then of extreme rarity were fundamental. He recognized the electrical nature of the attractive power of a warmed tourmaline and attempted not altogether successfully to reduce its apparent capriciousness to rule. He was particularly struck by the formal similarity between the tourmaline and the magnet in regard to polarity which inspired him to reconsider the possibility then occasionally discussed that electricity and magnetism were basically analogous. Internally fine. � Very scarce first French edition of Oersteds main work in theoretical chemistry and dynamical physics containing the main statements of his"Naturphilosophie" which guided him to his later discoveries and contains the germ of his epochal discovery of electromagnetism eight year later in 1820. All over in nature the same force is active and matter is dependent on two fundamental forces a repelling and an attractive force manifesting itself in different forms such as electricity magnetism chemical actions heat and light. he proposes that experiments should be made whether electricity in one of its most latent forms could act on the magnetic bodies as such - his experiments of 1820 established this connection in the form proposed here i.e. electricity in its galvanic form.<br><br>This French edition translated from the German "Ansicht der chemischen Naturgesetze." 1812 was published when Oersted received an offer from Marcel de Serres of translating it. Oersted himself took part in the translation or adaptation which was necessay on account of the great difference in the opinions that might be presupposed among French and German readers. The plates are copied from Schoonebeck's plate to the first edition.<br>The work on Barometers thermometers etc. "is the earliest account dealing exclusively with the subject and especially valuable as the first work laying rules for graduation of the thermometer."Sotheran No. 929 note - "His detailed description of the principal meteorological instruments of the period is enriched with several new ideas such as the calibration of the thermometric scale on the basis of two points of change of state: the point at which water freezes and - a much more contestable point - that at which butter melts." DSB.<br>The work on the magnet deals with all aspect of its effects and its uses in compasses and navigation etc. invention of the compass magnetic mountains in America declination orientation of compass-needles in magnetic fields and it sums up all the knowledge then known on the subject. A few brownspots but internally clean. � Scarce first edition of Hans Christian Oersted's first printed book The Science of the General Laws of Nature. <br><br>Oersted is universally known for his discovery of the Electro-Magnetism in 1820. In this his first printed book Oersted proposes at least three theses that he were to follow for the rest of his life and which he made the foundation for his discovery of Electro-Magnetism: the crucial role that experiments and thereby empiricism play in the perception of nature; the fact that each individual phenomenon in nature in accordance with the philosophy of nature must be understood as a whole; and that the laws of nature are the same everywhere in the smallest and in the greatest parts of the universe. The sort of philosophy of nature that Oersted studies and develops is by him comprehended as a product of human striving towards with its reason to "include and penetrate the entire nature and to explain it in its full context" from "Science of the General Laws of Nature" - own translation which is why this philosophy is also the science of the general laws of nature that are the same everywhere. It thus not only includes the science of movement but also that of electricity magnetism light warmth and chemical connections such as they all follow directly from ordinary forces of nature and Oested's discovery in 1820 of the connection between magnetism and electricity must be seen in this connection.<br><br>Both H.C. Andersen and S�ren Kierkegaard admit to having been influenced by the writings of Oersted. "He was an enthusiastic follower of the "Naturphilosophie" school in Germany whose main object was the unification of physical forces thus producing a monistic theory of the universe.
