Si tratta di quel genere di comunicazioni che si ottengono dapprima attraverso il cosiddetto "piattino" (o bicchierino) o con la "planchette", e che successivamente diventano comunicazioni scritte direttamente sul foglio in stato di particolare concentrazione, senza un intervento diretto della coscienza e della volontà di chi scrive. Rimane aperto il problema se a produrre il fenomeno sul cui effettivo verificarsi non esistono dubbi siano realmente, come molti sostengono, delle entità, ossia degli spiriti (e in tal caso si tratta quasi sempre di amici o parenti di chi scrive) oppure se le comunicazioni abbiano origine nell'inconscio dello scrivente, ovvero siano effetto dello psichismo collettivo dei presenti all'esperimento.‎
