Original blue printed paper wrappers bound in. Printer's device on leaf facing opening of text. One folding leaf of manuscript facsimile printed in collotype at the Clarendon Press. Rear pastedown with the bookseller's ticket of W. & G. Foyle. Madan 54. Minor offsetting to endleaves from binder's glue as usual other trivial imperfections but A FINE COPY clean and fresh internally with generous margins and in a virtually unworn lustrous binding.<br/> <br/> This is an intriguing item in every way: it is "a noteworthy experiment in versification" Madan by a future poet laureate; it is printed by a pioneering private press; and it is in a binding with unique features. Described by Day as a "poet's poet" who was "one of the most important experimenters and students of English prosody" Robert Bridges 1844-1930 was inspired by his friend William Stone to attempt to write verse in the quantitative hexameters employed by Classical poets such as Virgil where scansion is determined by the number of long and short syllables rather than by the stresses on syllables accentual scansion generally used in English verse. The poem takes the form of an epistle to Bridges' friend "L. M." hymn writer Lionel Muirhead extolling the virtues of studying science--an uncommon subject for a poem perhaps but one that allowed Bridges who read Classics at Oxford before attending medical school to combine two passions. The Reverend Charles Henry O. Daniel 1836-1919 is called by Cave "by far the most important of all the . . . Victorian printers for pleasure." With the help of his wife and two daughters Daniel produced 60-odd pieces mostly during the last quarter of the 19th century. This corpus of works was responsible for a renewed interest in the Fell types which had been bequeathed to the Oxford University Press after having been ignored for many years and then taken up by Daniel for continuing use at his press. Daniel was a friend of Bridges and published several of volumes of his poetry. Our binding is a pleasing marriage of Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau design elements with gilding in the style of the former and with very unusual hand-painted endpapers in the curving attenuated lines characteristic of the latter. The painting is similar in style to that on bindings produced by the Royal School of Art Needlework and was perhaps executed by someone--likely a woman--who studied there. Daniel Press unknown

Collection of original drawings and watercolors
Paris ca. 1900-1910. A collection of pencil pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings on 66 mounts one unmounted some mounts with numerous smaller drawings all drawings tipped at corners. Mounts measuring 360 x 173 mm. In a cloth folding case. Some chipping to edges and age darkening to mounts generally in very well-preserved condition with colors fresh and bright. Richard Barabandy 1849-1915 born Riccardo Barabandi in Milan studied from 1864 to 1869 with Bartolomeo Giuliano at the Milan Academy of Fine Arts. He was appointed a professor of the Academy in 1879 and was active in the literary and artistic circles of the city counting among his close friends the poet Gian Pietro Lucini the writer Felice Cameroni and the sculptor Medardo Rosso. By 1889 the year of the great Exposition Universelle that celebrated the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution and helped to establish Paris as the art capital of Europe Barabandy was living in Paris. He changed his name to Richard Barabandy and found work as an illustrator for several Parisian newspapers including Triboulet Soleil du dimanche and l’Illustration.Barabandy did many covers for sheet music using his naturalistic Art Nouveau designs. Three are found here: C. CHAMINADE. Joie d'Aimer. Duo pour baryton et mezzo-soprano poésie de Edmond Guinard. – MADEL CLERC. En Jonque Barcarolle musical score – S.LOEN. Cantique pour la Nuit de Noel. Another title-page design is for his work on ornaments: BARABANDY. 40 pages d'ornements modernes á deux couleurs apparently unpublished. Röder. <br /> <br /> Plauen a city in Saxony near the Bavarian border and the Czech Republic became a center of textile manufacturing in the late 19th century. The local design school with its connection to the publisher Christian Stoll became one of the trendsetting German institutions way into the 1920s. <br /> <br /> Text in German. Binding rubbed with some wear along edges and at corners. A couple of small chips at the seam of the cloth binding. Cloth spine with one inch closed tear at tail of spine. Paper-covered spine worn at inside and endpapers browned. Title page age-toned with light foxing and some creasing at foredge. Plates with sporadic foxing few smudges and light staining in margins only minor affects of images on two plates. Plate 8 discolored and smudged in margins not affecting image. Some age-toning in general. Portfolio and plates in overall good to good at times very good condition. Christian Stoll hardcover

One volume with the list of plates. Modern half morocco clamshell case with divider and glassines. Some smudging and light soiling to the lower margins of the first few plates of each series. Celebrated 19th century little person. Uncommon tinted carte-de-visite photograph 2 3/8" X 4" New York NY 1862. Very good. Decorative backstamp on patterned verso of "Ranger's Photograph Parlors / 28 East Genesee St. / Franklin Buildings / SYRACUSE / N.Y." On the recto within a fine gilt double-rule border a 2 1/8" X 3 3/8" albumen full-length portrait of Houghton has been affixed with fine print caption in red beneath: "Maj. S.E. Houghton / 20 Years Old--Height 31 Inches--Weight 41 lbs." The image is clear and there's a bit of hand tinting -- the top of a small table next to Houghton appears green and a flowing drapery next to that is purple. The card itself shows a slight bit of wear and mild age toning. Houghton along with the better known General and Mrs. Tom Thumb and lesser lights such as Lizzie A. Reed Houghton was another of the sideshow celebrities many of whom adopted military titles who satiated the American public's taste for novelty. This particular card was reissued a number of times both prior to and after this card the only change being in his age. unknown
