An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten: "Gerne hätte ich Ihrem Wunsche entsprochen, allein die Direction hat an 120 Stücke zur Sichtung vorliegen und da können Sie sich einen Begriff machen, wie einem diesbezüglich entgegnet wird. Anbei erlaube ich mir daher, die 3 mir übergebenen Bücher zu retournieren mit der Versicherung, dass ich Ihnen herzlich gerne zu Diensten gestanden wäre […]". - Frank besuchte nach ihrem Debüt bei einer heimatlichen Schauspielertruppe die Wiener Theaterschule Dorr, kam über das Berliner Viktoria-Theater (1871) nach Potsdam und Bremen und wurde, durch Alexander Sakosch empfohlen, von Heinrich Laube an das Wiener Stadttheater engagiert, wo sie als Hero und Maria Stuart große Erfolge errang. Nach einem Gastspiel 1875 in das Burgtheater-Ensemble aufgenommen, kehrte Frank wegen der Rivalität mit Charlotte Wolter an das Stadttheater zurück, spielte nach dessen Brand in Hamburg, Riga und Stuttgart und war 1887-99 Mitglied der Vereinigten Stadttheater in Frankfurt/Main. Danach ohne festes Engagement, spielte sie 1900 am Wiener Volkstheater, 1901 am New Yorker Irving Place Theater.‎

‎Leo Frank wuchs zusammen mit seinem Zwillingsbruder Hans (gest. 1948), ebenfalls Künstler, in Wien auf. Beide besuchten 1902-1906 die dortige Kunstgewerbeschule und 1907/11 die Spezialschule Franz Rumplers (1848-1922) an der Kunstakademie. Die ersten Farbholzschnitte Leo Franks entstanden 1906. In diesem Jahr nahmen beide Brüder bereits an einer Ausstellung der Wiener Sezession teil und fielen bei der Schulausstellung der Akademie 1911 durch ihr hohes Können auf. In den folgenden Jahren war sie auf Reisen. 1912/13 wurde Leo zum Wehrdienst einberufen, während Hans eine Ausstellung für beide in der Wiener Sezession organisierte. 1914 wurden beide als Soldaten einberufen. 1918 reiste Leo nach Griechenland, Italien und Ägypten. 1920 kehrte Leo nach Wien zurück und übernahm als Assistent von Alfred Coßmann (1870-1951) den Unterricht im Fach Holzschnitt an der Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt und wurde, wie sein Bruder, 1921 Mitglied des Wiener Künstlerhauses. 1927 wurden sie zu Mitgliedern der Society of Graver-Printmakers in Colour, London und in den dreißiger Jahren Mitglieder der Pasadena-Printmaker-Society of Artists. Darüber hinaus ergaben sich Beziehungen zur National Gallery of Canada. Während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus blieben Hans und Leo weiterhin geachtete Künstler, ohne ihre Auffassung und Einstellung zur Kunst zu ändern. 1933 wurde Leo als Nachfolger Alfred Coßmanns zum Professor im Fach für Kupferstich und Radierung an der Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt bestellt, was er bis 1945 blieb. Nach seiner Entlassung lebte Leo bis zu seinem Tod in Mondsee und dann in Perchtoldsdorf.‎

‎The outer panels of the Ghent Altarpiece had been overpainted to a considerable extent. The virtuosity of the Eyckian technique and aesthetics remained hardly visible. And yet, this had never been observed before the start of the conservation treatment. By removing the overpaint, the tonal richness and the coherent rendering of light and space once again came to the fore. Especially the suggestion of volumes and the spaciousness of the ensemble gained strength because of the virtuoso play of deep shadows and bright light accents, and not in the least because of the surprising trompe-l'oeil effect of the frames conceived as a stone framework. Or to put it in the words of the comments of one of the experts, dr. Maryan Ainsworth: The paintings live and breathe again in the time of the Van Eyck brothers. The sharp observation skills, the quick, accurate execution, the knowledge, curiosity and ingenuity about all the things that are depicted, are now unveiled after centuries. The profit for the knowledge of and further research into the essence of Eyckian aesthetics is considerable. And finally there is the discovery that the much-discussed quatrain was applied simultaneously with the polychromy of the frames: a real 'coup de foudre' in the discourse of the current art-historical research! The subtleties of the Eyckian technique could also be mapped out in more detail. How the Van Eycks managed to keep the final result and the desired effect in mind during every phase of the execution, from imprimatura to finishing touch. The artists made a statement about the art of painting, giving ?technique? as such a new prominence. The Ghent Altarpiece may be understood at some point as a major showpiece for a highly sophisticated pictorial technique. We hope that this publication of the results of the research and conservation campaign on the exterior of the altarpiece can help future researchers to ask better questions. Questions, and answers, that may produce a more balanced picture of Van Eyck's techniques, methods and materials. En 1942, il rencontre à Vézelay l'architecte Le Corbusier ; en 1955, il expose à Vézelay avec Bernard Buffet et Michel Ciry. ‎RARE beautifully illustrated alphabet book published during the twelfth year of Italian Fascist regime intended specifically for Italian children living abroad in order to indoctrinate them in the strength and glories of Mussolini's Fascist government. The propagandist book introduces key concepts in Fascist lexicon, such as Duce under the letter D, Tripoli under the letter T, etc. Carlo Testi's illustrations are typical for the style prevalent in children's literature in this period. 250x230mm. Unpaginated [88 pages]. Illustrated board Hardcover with cloth spine. Cover yellowing and stained. Front cover rubbed and slightly peeling. Rear cover heavily rubbed and peeling. Spine hinges and edges partly torn and peeling. Pages detached from binding (pages binding still intact). Small stamp on inner cover upper corner. Title-page upper corner creased. Title-page bottom corner slightly chipped. Pages slightly yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare illustrated alphabet book, a real treat to all serious collectors of old children's books and especially Italian Fascist period children's books, is otherwise in good condition.‎

‎Traveller's Malay Pronouncing Hand-Book‎

‎<p>Singapore: Fraser and Neave 1889. Sixth edition. Board_book. Good. This was one of the first books published for the ordinary Brit who was not a scholar to enable her/him to deal with "servants and other persons" in Malay. Its unique feature was to attempt to transliterate Malay into some sort of a phonetic system that could be more easily grasped by the native English speaker. The phrase book has four columns for the English phrase the translation into the Rumi script the phonetic version and a blank column for notes. Good Paperback. Sixth Edition 317 pages with another 26 page index to words used in the text. Weight 0.4kg. Post free within Malaysia The green cloth cover does not have much wear. At a couple of places in the book the hinge has cracked but no pages are loose. The binding is good the text is clear and there is very mild tanning throughout.</p> Fraser and Neave‎
