Beschnitten. - Gunz war bis 1859 als Sekundararzt am Wiener Allgemeinen Krankenhaus tätig und widmete sich nebenbei seiner Gesangsausbildung. 1859 begann er seine Bühnenkarriere an der Hofoper von Wien und folgte 1861 einem Ruf an das Hoftheater von Hannover, dem er bis 1881 angehörte. Gunz ging 1862 zur Fortsetzung seiner Studien nach Paris und hatte seinen ersten großen Erfolg als Solist 1863 in Düsseldorf. Seit 1888 unterrichtete G. am Hochschen Konservatorium in Frankfurt/Main.

Was muß der wohl für Begriffe von einem Künstler haben? Als ob man sich so zu reinem Vergnügen einen Bronchialcatarrh zulegte und Konzerte absagte um sich dafür wochenlang in's Bett zu legen?! Gut, er soll das verlangte ärztl. Zeugniß haben! Er möge sich noch an Dr. Eysell in Kassel wenden, der mich schon am 24. Nov. behandelte. Dort habe ich wohl auch zu meinem Privatvergnügen eine Einnahme von nahezu 2000 Mark zurückzahlen lassen?! Was für Aufregungen ich seit dem 24. Nov. durchgemacht, das lässt sich gar nicht beschreiben. Seit 11. Dez. ist mein Urlaub zu Ende u heute ist mein Zustand derart, dass ich mich noch auf unbestimmte Zeit bei der Generalintendanz krank melden musste. Beifolgendes Zeugniß war eigentlich für meinen Chef bestimmt, da derselbe bei mir dergleichen für überflüssig erachtet, sende ich es für den ‚Käufer'. Pfui - ekelt mich die ganze Sache doch so an, dass ich nur ein Gefühl übrig habe, das des tiefsten Bedauerns: meiner ahnungsvollen Scheu nicht nachgegeben zu haben! […]". Gura beschwert sich beim Adressaten, dem Direktor eines Wiener Theaters, über dessen niedriges Honorar: "Hauptsächlich empört mich der trocken- rücksichtslose Geschäftsstil, in dem Sie mir schreiben, als ob Sie es mit einem umherziehenden Durchgänger zu thun hätten […] Wenn Sie auf Ihrer Auffassung (entgegen Ihrer früheren Ansicht) beharren, daß ich in Wien auf meine Rechnung u. Gefahr zu konzertieren habe, mithin jetzt schon alle in Folge meiner nothgedrungenen Absage erwachsenen Unkosten zu tragen habe, dann erkläre ich alle unsere Unterhandlungen (mit Einsendung dieser Unkosten) für abgebrochen, und wir haben auf dieser Erde nichts mehr mit einander zu schaffen […]". - Eugen Gura debütierte 1865 in Albert Lortzings ‚Waffenschmied' und galt "als einer der bedeutendsten Wagner-Interpreten seiner Zeit im Baß-Bariton-Fach" (DBE), sang u. a. 1876 den Gunther in der Uraufführung der ‚Götterdämmerung' bei den Bayreuther Festspielen und trat dort bis 1896 auch als König Marke im ‚Tristan' und als Hans Sachs in den ‚Meistersingern' auf. Neben seiner Bühnentätigkeit war Gura auch als Konzert- und Liedersänger erfolgreich.
