Drifting
Hollywood: Mirisch-McCrea Productions 1959. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff blue wrappers with two 2-pring brass clasps. 3pp 35pp all rectos only white stock with occasional blue stock. Very good. Outer wrappers a bit edgeworn and soiled with light vertical fold running down center. Original typed and mimeographed script for the fifth episode of the one and only season of the half-hour Western series "Wichita Town" which starred Joel McCrea and his son Jody McCrea. This script is dated June 3 1959 and aired on October 28 1959. Signature on front wrapper of a Bill Moore apparently a production person. The first 3 leaves consist of the "Shooting Schedule" also signed by Moore a scene-by-scene chart of sets filled with Moore's extensive inked notes throughout. The 35-page script that follows is occasionally marked with Moore's underlining and margin reminders of props needed etc. Tipped in loose at the front is a 1-page partly-printed "Call Sheet" a fascinating internal document scheduling all the film work for one day's shooting of this script 27 July 1959: Actors required makeup schedule sets needed for each scene production requirements etc. With stiff competition from shows such as "Gunsmoke" "Lawman" and other Western shows "Wichita Town" only ran for 26 episodes premiering on September 30 1959 and with the final episode airing on April 6 1960. DUST JACKET: Lightly Creased; Lightly Chipped; Moderate Fading Due to Sun Exposure; In Archival Quality Jacket Cover. The First Thirty-five Years. SUB-TITLE: An Anecdotal History. BOOK NUMBER: 24E3. SYNOPSIS: "Well here we are and good morning to you. The very first good morning of what I hope and suspect will be a great many good mornings between you and me. Here it is January 14 1952 when NBC begins a new program called Today and if it doesn't sound too revolutionary I really believe this begins a new kind of television." - Dave Garroway opening the first Today show. Since those historic words went on the air - for the past thirty-five years - millions of people each weekday morning have turned on their television sets to watch the Today show. The history of this lustrous show is - in many ways - a history of television and of American culture; a virtual Who's Who of stars personalities and political figures have been presented on Today. The Today Show: An Anecdotal History is the first book to tell Today's history with comments and stories from the stars of the past such as Dave Garroway Estelle Parsons Jack Lescoulie Frank Blair Lee Meriwether as well as the more recent personalities-Hugh Downs Tom Brokaw Joe Garagiola Barbara Walters Frank McGee . . . to name just a few. In addition we are introduced to the countless people behind the scenes from producers to unit managers to stagehands and the coffee lady - the people who work with the current cast of Jane Pauley Bryant Gumbel Willard Scott and Gene Shalit. This nostalgic book shows the complex dynamics of producing the first and longest-running morning TV show . . . Today. This is the book for all television enthusiasts. Illustrated with over eighty photographs it is full of inside facts and trivia plus the humorous the serious the congenial and the revealing moments that only a live show can produce. Davlin, Mary Clemente
A Game of Heuene: Word Play and the Meaning of Piers Plowman B
A Game of Heuene is a stylistic study of word play in the B-version of the Middle English narrative poem, Piers Plowman. In a close reading of Passus I, IX, XI, and XVIII, Davlin shows the frequency of word play and its effectiveness in multiplying meaning, developing themes, and suggesting relationships. Like other notorious 'shifting, unstable' elements of style in Piers Plowman, its word play is enigmatic and demands of the reader intense attention and play of mind. Davlin argues that such demands are a way of involving the reader in the text as 'a game of heuene' (Langland's phrase for language, IX, 104), which teaches how to read experience as well as words in order to find Treuthe. The difficult form of Piers Plowman,is thus mimetic of its protagonist's struggle to experience Treuthe, and also ludic, requiring the reader to share aesthetically in Will's experience by playing the 'game of heuene', learning 'kyndeli to knowe -Treuthe'through deciphering its enigmas. A Game of Heuene advocates and demonstrates close reading with attention to word play, and should be useful to beginning students of Piers Plowmanas well as to scholars; its explication opens the meaning of particular passages and proposes a new understanding of the meaning of the entire structure and style of the poem
