NORBAG (North Redwoods Book Arts Guild)
Collection of Book-Arts Inspired Christmas Cards
NORBAG 2005. Trade Paperback. NORBAG founded in 1995 is a group of amateur and semi-professional book artists who meet regularly to learn new techniques and to exchange work. Just as various amateur press associations and local printers' chappels echo the fine press movement local book arts guilds use the same techniques and book forms as professional book artists. One common element of book arts guilds and amateur press associations is the regular exchange of work among the members. From the very beginning NORBAG organized a Christmas card exchange. Present here are cards from the earliest exchanges from the founding year of the organziation with a few earlier examples. There is also a run of cards from 1999 to 2005 lacking 2004. The cards offer an interesting look at the amateur book arts as the participants explore screenprinting embossing various book structures collage techniques and paper styles. This collection includes more than 100 cards from about three dozen different artists many contributing cards in multiple years. All in all an interesting look into the amateur book arts world. Most cards fine; a few with bent corners. Most are signed by the artist but some are unidentified. 5 parts in Japanese (5 oblong folio volumes, 390 x 275 mm) with 90 lithographed plates, all but one hand-coloured. Original blue wrappers, sewn in Japanese style, paper labels on upper covers. Includes French translations (5 large octavo volumes in the publisher's printed wrappers). Together in original blue cloth folder with toggles. The "Kwan-Ko-Dzu-Setsu" (illustrated catalogue of archaeological objects) constitutes an interesting and rare early example of Japanese lithography, illustrating Japanese ceramic art, with highly unusual examples from the treasury of Todaiji Temple. It was opened only once or twice each century by an imperial commission of which the editor, the renowned antiquarian Noritané Ninagawa (1835-83), was a member. - Occasional light staining. Bindings rubbed, some stitching broken, hinges of folder weakened, but altogether very well preserved. OCLC 29078824.

The book and its contents are in generally clean bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping rubbing and edge wear. There is one small nick / frayed spot to the bottom spine end of the book cover. The covers have spots of ground-in dirt and one spot of fading to the front cover. The text pages are clean and bright. Illustrated with photographs of people in dramatic poses. "In Western classical rhetoric elocution was one of the five core disciplines of pronunciation which was the art of delivering speeches. Orators were trained not only on proper diction but on the proper use of gestures stance and dress. Another area of rhetoric elocutio was unrelated to elocution and instead concerned the style of writing proper to discourse. Elocution emerged as a formal discipline during the eighteenth century. One of its important figures was Thomas Sheridan actor and father of Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Thomas Sheridan's lectures on elocution collected in Lectures on Elocution 1762 and his Lectures on Reading 1775 provided directions for marking and reading aloud passages from literature.
