Chaque numéro se compose de huit pages et comporte une une rehaussée en couleurs , par Robida pour le Monde comique et par Grévin dans le Petit journal pour rire. Contributions artistiques de Lefman principalement pour le Monde comique, et de Bertall, Daumier et Gillot entre autres pour le Petit journal pour rire. En même temps que le Journal amusant parut, de 1856 à 1904, Le Petit journal pour rire, version « populaire », de format plus petit et de huit pages, moins cher aussi, dont la plupart de ses illustrations étaient reprises du Journal amusant. Le premier rédacteur en chef en fut Nadar. Il eut pour directeur Eugène Philipon, puis Th. le Cerf. À partir du numéro 9, la première de couverture présenta une composition originale, laquelle se para de couleurs à partir du numéro 50. De 1859 à 1889, Grévin en fut l'auteur, puis, à partir de 1889, B. Gautier prit la relève. Le Petit Journal pour rire subit, lui aussi, des interruptions pendant la guerre de 1870 et la Commune. Gift inscription on front free endpaper from the author to Thomas Ridgway dated Feb. 1941. Edward Robins 1862-1943 was an American author and a president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The recipient Thomas Ridgway 1874-1943 was also an active supporter of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and was writing a biography of actor Edwin Forrest when he died. The subject of this biography is Anne Oldfield 1683-1730 an English actress. In Very Good Condition: slightly cocked; cover slightly rubbed; occasional light foxing; otherwise clean and tight.
