Als Sänger und Schauspieler in Lokalstücken war er in seiner Heimatstadt erfolgreich und sang u.a. den Grafen in der Uraufführung von Lortzings "Opernprobe" 1851.

Wünscht Josef Wesely “[d]as Beste für 1938!” - Nach abgeschlossener Tanzausbildung am Kärntnertor-Theater debütierte Hassreiter daselbst 1850, wurde 1866 Erster Solotänzer an der Münchner Hofoper, war in Stuttgart tätig und von 1870-90 als Erster Solotänzer an der Wiener Hofoper. Nach dem großen Erfolg seines Balletts ‘Die Puppenfee’ wurde er zum Hofballettmeister ernannt und bildete als Vorstand der k. k. Hofopernballettschule mehrere Generationen bedeutender Tänzerinnen und Tänzer aus. Der vielfach, u. a. mit dem Franz-Josefs-Orden und dem Goldenen Verdienstkreuz sowie zahlreichen ausländischen Auszeichnungen geehrte Tänzer schrieb zu zehn Balletten das Libretto, zu 48 die Choreographie, gastierte im Ausland und wurde 1915 Ehrenmitglied der Hofoper.
