The joint proprietors of a children's clothing shop, Mary (1699-1741) and Ann (1701-1771) Hogarth, wee sisters to the famed William Hogarth (1697-1764). "in his 1730 trade card for his sisters, you sense he is somewhat bemused by the subject he portrays. A youth and his family are gathered round and appear to be engaged in a bit of drama, with arms gesturing. The gentleman is wearing a long coat with turned back cuffs and the indication of fancy stitching at button holes and pockets. The sisters sold "ready made frocks?stript Dimity & Flanel Waistcoats." A coat hangs in the background and what appear to be vest pieces or patterns are on the table to the right. Bildseite. - In Florenz und Paris aufgewachsen, erlernte die Künstlerin die deutsche Sprache erst während eines Besuchs bei Verwandten in Deutschland und strebte, nachdem ihre Familie bleibend nach Deutschland zurückgekehrt war, 1870 eine Karriere am deutschsprachigen Theater an. An der Leipziger Theaterschule studierend, debütierte sie drei Jahre später am Berliner Nationaltheater als Luise in "Kabale und Liebe" und wurde, noch im selben Jahr, von Franz von Dingelstedt in den Verband des Wiener Burgtheaters berufen, wo sie 1882 zur Hofschauspielerin ernannt wurde und 1887 einen Vertrag auf Lebenszeit erhielt. Als ihr Gatte, Alfred Frh. von Berger, 1910 die Direktion des Hauses übernahm, zog sich die "'Märtyrerin ihres ewig frühlingshaften Mädchentums', dem sie sich auch dann nicht entreißen kann, als ihr Alter längst ein reiferes Fach erfordert hätte" (Felix Salten; zit. n. Haeusserman, Das Wiener Burgtheater, Wien u. a., Molden, 1975, S. 55), von der Bühne zurück. - In altem Sammlungsumschlag.
