Johnson, Samuel (Ed. By E. L. McAdam, Jr. & George Milne)
Johnson's Dictionary: A Modern Selection
New York: Pantheon Books 1963 WYSIWYG pricing--no added shipping charge for standard shipping within USA. Brown leather-textured boards gilt titles & decorations xiv 465 pp. Edge wear. DJ has small chips & tears; in Brodart archival cover. Samuel Johnson's plan in compiling his dictionary was to define words by quoting examples from English literature and thereby to create an anthology as well as a dictionary. The editors' purpose in this abridgement dictionary "is to furnish the modern reader enough of the original work so as to give him some sense of the unique quality of this landmark of literature and learning. There would be no point in repeating ordinary definitions of words found in any modern dictionary but where such a word is given an unusual sense or definition it is included. A large number of obsolete words are included and we have given a selection of the examples." Shipping weight 3 lbs. 3rd ptg. . VG-/G. 22 X 15 cm. Pantheon Books Hardcover

JOHNSON, Van (1916-2008)
Inscribed Photograph Signed
The freckled red-haired American golden boy of numerous films of the 1940s and '50s -- most memorably "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" 1944 and "The Caine Mutiny" 1954 -- continued appearing in films and on television into the 1980s. IPS 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. circa 1960. Very good. Faint inoffensive tape stain at each corner. Glossy head-and-shoulders portrait of Johnson in suit and tie facing right head turned toward the camera and grinning slyly left hand on cheek. In a light area at lower left he inscribes and signs huge and bold: "To Don -- / Kindest regards -- / Van Johnson" in thickish dark blue ink. An outstanding vintage example. unknown
