Written as a Medieval Revival epic poem of a young wife Princess Phillipina on quest to the Holy Land during the Crusades searching for her errant knight husband Prince Conrad. In keeping with the Arts & Crafts inspired traditions married with the modern this entire piece was originally as manuscript on a translucent material and then exposed to light on light sensitive Japanese vellum style paper in bifolium with each carefully folded and bound in Japanese style. The Valentine’s Day cyanotype card tipped-in as colophon and signed in the original before reproduction is dated 1917. Southern California before World War I was a center of Arts & Crafts fine press productions and the Christmas cards created by Benton are in keeping with the style including the commissioning of noted stained glass artist and painter Sharp 1864-1944 to create the illustrated border & ornament for the 1915 card laid-in here. Benton 1858-1927 was a well-known southern California Architect and proponent of the Mission Revival Arts & Crafts style whose major commissions included the Mission Revival Arlington Hotel in Santa Barbara Arrowhead Hotel in San Bernardino and the San Marcos Hotel in Chandler AZ. He was a founding member of the Landmarks Club to restore the San Juan Capistrano and San Diego Missions and also led the project on the Mission Inn at Riverside whose stained glass windows were executed by Sharp.
