Pergamena miniata derivante da legatura veneziana del XVI sec.
Pergamena miniata cm 26 x 39 originariamente appartenente a rilegatura raffigurante al piatto anteriore l'immagine di una figura chimerica, poggiante sul verde di un prato con fondo rosso, compresa in una bordura a filetto in rosso, e al piatto posteriore una decorazione in rosso e blu, presumibilmente ottenuta a mezzo di stampino compresa in doppio filetto rosso e blu. Un altro filetto in rosso degna lo spazio del dorso compreso tra i due piatti. La pergamena, che originariamente avrebbe potuto ricoprire un registro (con buona probabilita' l'animale fantastico potrebbe essere simbolo di un'impresa araldica), fu riutilizzata nel XVII secolo, sfruttando la parte al verso come copertura di un volume a stampa. Questa pergamena dovrebbe rientrare, in particolare per quanto riguarda la decorazione al piatto posteriore, tra i rari esempi di 'legatura a stampo' veneziana, in uso appunto in questa citta' gia' nel XVI secolo. Questa tipologia ornamentale, abbandonata per quasi due secoli, verra' ripresa nella meta' del XVIII secolo, in particolare dai Remondini di Bassano, per la realizzazione delle loro celebri carte xilografiche. Una simile legatura, seppur datata come produzione del XVIII secolo, risulta documentata in: G. Bologna, Legature, Milano, 1998, p. 137.

In16°. Pagine 141, (1). Rilegatura in piena pergamena rigida coeva. All'interno diffuse gore e bruniture. Tre pagine presentano parte del testo un po' sbiadito ma comunque abbastanza leggibile (vedi foto). All'interno è presente una piccola incisione. Stato di conservazione complessivamente buono. Raro e curioso trattatello sulle tecniche di preparazione ed utilizzo dei colori, opera di autore anonimo pubblicata in Francia nel XVII secolo e poi più volte tradotta in italiano.

A Fine crisp copy in Fine slipcase with repeat colour plate. Books in this little series are often found lacking frontispiece as with use the string cuts through its inner margin. Text in German. The sweet pictures show a mother talking to her baby then as a toddler schoolgirl her birthday at Christmas etc. the last showing the young girl at her Confirmation. In the original publisher's thin cream card wraps decorated with a green and pink border and 2 young women holding a scroll with the title on upper cover in the middle of the lower cover is printed in small letters: "Deposé". Edition unknown 1797 miniature book 24mo approximately 95 x 57 mm 3¾ x 2¼ inches French text engraved hand coloured allegorical title page with Cupid Beaute Decence and 5 putti foliage etc. 12 HAND COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES some allegorical 8 pages of almanac at front 8 at rear dated from September 1797 to August 1798 plus 48 pages of little verses numbered thus: 12 24 13-24. Most of the verses are preceded by the name of a tune or 'Air' to which they should be sung. Bound in dark olive green morocco triple gilt ruled border with tiny corner ornaments to covers gilt decoration to spine no lettering or label all edges gilt gilt and orange floral pastedowns no endpapers. Slightly worn at head of spine and corners tiny chip at tail of spine old paper strip used inside rear cover to recase contents in the binding title page dusty in the margins bookseller's label pasted to blank verso of title page 1 or 2 pale fox spots plates very nice. A good complete copy of an uncommon book one copy in the French Libraries none in WorldCat none listed in Library Hub Discover it is mentioned in a list of French Almanacs in the Journal général de la littérature de France Volume 2 page 218. No music. Tiny chip at tail of spine 20 mm ¾" crack at foot of lower hinge leather slightly stained corners slightly worn faint inscription and old sums on front endpapers rear endpapers slightly soiled fore-edge of title page well thumbed as are many pages mainly near beginning light stain to margin of pages 52 54 and 55 all easily legible many pages dusty some very lightly soiled name in ink in top margin of page 101 another on page 52 of Part II final page of index in Part II browned. A good set of 2 uncommon titles frontispiece defective in Part I frontispiece and title page lacking in Part II. Copac lists a few copies of The Little English Warbler first published in 1803 in Edinburgh by Oliver & Co.; Welsh Bibliography of Miniature Books No. 4443 listing only The Little English Warbler; Bondy Miniature Books page 150 listing only The Little Warbler "the best known English collection of songs" published in Edinburgh in 1803.
