‎Persian Miniatures from the Baburama: Six Original Paintings‎

‎Persia: Unpublished 1875. No Binding. Near Fine. 8x14.5cm Six Persian miniatures apparently retelling the Barburama the life story of Emperor Babur founder of the Moghul dynasty. Each of the leaves is 11x17.5cm with an inset tempera painting set within a triple red frame 8x14.5cm. Overleaf manuscript in Farsi written in black ink with red ink underlining. Condition: a couple of wormholes to margins and on the verso mounting tape running along the head of the manuscript pages. Excellent bright images. Probably dating from the mid nineteenth century Christian era. This identification must be tentative but these images appear to correspond to the following episodes in the standard version of the Babur's life the Barburama: 2 Babur being entertained in Ghazni 4 Babur and his party hunting for rhinoceros in Swati 5 Babur encounters an old woman 6 Awards ceremony at Sultan Ibrahim's court before being sent on an expedition to Sambhal - or perhaps amzah Sulan Mahdi Sulan and Mamaq Sulan pay homage to Babur. A drummer musicians and a dancing girl are all depicted. 7 Babur hunting dogs 8 Sultan Muammad Vays offers Babur a healthy horse to replace his ailing one. Near Fine 1875 Unpublished unknown‎

SECOND EDITION circa 1919 first published circa 1910 by Henry Frowde miniature children's book approximately 67 x 59 mm 2½ x 2¼ inches buff boards double string knot binding large colour plate on upper cover of the cat in doublet and hose pretty green and mauve floral endpapers 31 pages. Charming coloured frontispiece of a shepherd boy dancing with a shepherdess vignette to title page all text printed green. Lower cover lightly stained minute hole in lower hinge no inscriptions. A very good plus clean tight copy. The cat becomes court jester and has his simple friends promoted to be Lord and Lady but they get bored and return to their humble life. The cat rises very high at court but is overthrown and he too returns gratefully to the cottage hearth. Pencil inscription on blank following front endpaper head and tail of spine and corners very slightly rubbed inner dentelles slightly chipped gilt on lower edges and at lower corner damp damaged so that red showing only see image tip of lower page corners also affected by damp and tips creased throughout most of the volume. A good plus clean copy. Bondy Miniature Books page 131; Welsh Bibliography of Miniature Books page 58 does not list this edition without Calendar etc. but there is a copy at Lambeth Palace listed on Copac; Griffiths Bibliography of Common Prayer page 414 No.4 no mention of Henry Frowde.
