Original embossed brown cloth covers. 203 pages. 18 engravings including frontispiece depicting "Adam and Eve in the Garden" "The Prodigal Son" "Samson Killing A Lion" "Christ's Agony in the Garden" "Moses in the Bullrushes" "John the Baptist" and more. Miniature 'thumb bibles' such as this one were abridged versions of the Bible intended for children and decorated with pictures. Only four libraries in the world hold this edition per OCLC Worldcat's records. Pencil ownership inscription on front pastedown reading "Sallie Hitch's Book Presented By Her Father". Sallie practices her name on the rear endpaper and leaves a small pencil doodle. Textblock tight though front hinge has separated from the textblock. Covers whole. Faint titles to spine. Tipped-in to volume II page 570 of Letters of a Family During the War for the Union 1861-1865 Printed for Private Distribution by Georgeana Woolsey Bacon and Eliza Woolsey Howland 1899 with a manuscript note in the margin dated 1899 and reading in part "Furniture & hangings by L. Marcotte & Co . everything made to perfect scale . sold to L.C. who refused it . Re-sold to the women's prisoners of the Insane Asylum at Philadelphia where the poor women when 'good' are allowed to play with it." Unrecorded in OCLC we assume this was printed for private distribution by a member of the Bacon or Howland family. The model fairy house and furniture was possibly made for the New York Metropolitan Fair of 1864 preparations for which are mentioned often in the collected family letters. Unrecorded in OCLC C.O.
