Queen Studio
Queen Studio postcard collection
Toronto ca. 1908-36. Very good. 10 9x14 cm b&w photo postcards on front side. Each in its own clear pocket attached to backerboard and covered with cellophane. On rear are 6 more cards with addresses postmarks and messages exposed. Backerboard is a bit cracked on this side and the cards are sliding around. A more secure form of permanent display will be needed. <br/><br/>One photo is of nine young men. The other photos are of various members of the group usually in cowboy or hunting attire. However we think they're playing dress-up not real cowboys since they're seated on barrels holding rifles in front of a painted backfrop of a log cabin and wilderness lake. unknown

Come imparare a studiare.

Randall Studio
Photographically-Illustrated Broadside Advertising a Lecture on Whistler by W.M. Chase
<p><em><strong>Platinum print affixed to paper</strong></em> <em><strong>20 x 25 inches overall</strong></em><br /><em><strong>Broadside with affixed platinum print photograph attached to board with red wax.</strong></em><br /><em><strong>With Randall's signature recto.</strong></em></p><p>A large and handsome broadside advertising a lecture entitled "Whistler the Man and His Art" which was delivered by William Merritt Chase at the photo studio of Herbert Randall in New Haven Connecticut and was sponsored by the city's Paint and Clay Club. The advertisement also lists the patronesses of the lecture and is illustrated by a stately portrait of Chase which was taken by Randall.<br /><br />American artists William Merritt Chase and James McNeill Whistler had to put it simply a complicated relationship. They met in the 1870s. Chase was already an admirer of Whistler who was more than ten years his senior and already very well-known. At first they struck up a friendship and at one point agreed to paint each other's portrait with the intention of exhibiting the two together. Chase painted a full size portrait of Whistler which he called "The Public Whistler." For this work Chase departed from his typical vibrant painting technique and mimicked Whistler's muted colors and style. In the meantime the two men's relationship began to strain as they traveled together and argued frequently. The final straw was Chase showing his portrait of Whistler without the latter in New York. The press coverage of the show presented the painting as an accurate ridiculing of Whistler's likeness and style and Whistler was insulted and declared himself finished with Chase and their friendship. Whistler's portrait of Chase has never been shown and in all likelihood was destroyed.<br /><br />Beginning around 1901 in what could perhaps be understood as an attempt to rewrite history or at least sway public perception of their relationship Chase began to tour with a lecture on his one-time close companion. Titled "Whistler: Man and his Art." Though he spoke of Whistler's hot-tempered nature the lecture was by all accounts a warm one. One review published in the Morris County Chronicle in 1902 recounts that Chase "gave an interesting description" of Whistler "consisting of personal reminiscence and criticisms on his many works" and that Chase "set forth the character of the man by his loyal devotion to art." Whistler passed away in 1903 and Chase continued his talks until the end of the decade.</p>

RESNE PHOTOGRAPH STUDIO (Bahaeddin Rahmi Ediz), (1875-1951).
LOVELY STUDIO MISE-EN-SCENE Four children in a great mise-en-scene of Resne Photography Studio.
Constantinople Istanbul: R. Bahaeddin: Resne Fotografhânesi. Istanbul'da Bâb-i Âlî Caddesinde No. 85. pre 1923. No Binding. Very Good. Original large-sized silver gelatin photograph. Mounted on cardboard. 35x30 cm; photo area: 24x18 cm. The calligraphic studio title is embossed on the lower of the cardboard. Scratching "4" on the upper right of the printed area slight creasing on the upper right of the cardboard and chipped extremities. Overall a good image. Fine gelatin silver mounted on the original photographer's cardboard showing four children probably three girls and their brother in an attractive and highly collectible photographer's mise-en-scene. A dark and shadowy print. Bahaettin Rahmi Bediz one of the prominent Muslim photographers of nineteenth-century Crete witnessed many political upheavals including the 1896 Cretan uprising the Balkan and World wars the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire the foundation of the Republic of Turkey the population exchange between Turkey and Greece. Bediz was born in Istanbul in 1875. He attended schools in Istanbul and Crete due to his father Ibrahim Rahmi Efendi's civil service appointments in both towns. Following his father's death twenty-year-old Bediz dropped out of Mekteb-i Sultânî Galatasaray High School and moved to Crete. His interest in photography is believed to have begun by chance when he was once asked to take a photograph of a group who came to his stationery shop in Heraklion. Bediz's career is divided into four distinct periods. Between 1896 and 1909 he photographed Crete and published around 200 postcards. Fluent in French he followed European publications related to his profession and acquired equipment from Paris London and Vienna. Bediz also contributed to the development of photography on the island by organizing contests. In 1909 due to ongoing severe conflicts on the island he moved back to Istanbul and opened a studio called Resne across the Sublime Porte on the historical peninsula. In 1927 he moved to Izmir where he was commissioned by various museums as a private photographer and participated in a number of archeological excavations during the following nine years. From 1936 to 1948 he continued his career in Ankara working for various institutions such as the Turkish Historical Society and the Ulus Publishing House. Bediz left many historical photographs behind as well as an unpublished book on the theory and practice of photography when he died in Istanbul in 1951. These photographs in SALT Research collections not only provide clues on his personal journey but also constitute significant documents revealing the socio-political aspects of the time.
