[EROTICA]. GRUNDWORTH STUDIO (attributed to).
Six nude studies.
Paris c.1930s. . Six gelatin silver prints 22 x 16 cm. Very good condition and with very good tone. Framed. <br /> A series of six nude studies showing the same model posing in the photographer's studio. The style of the photographs which artistically combines high and low art allows to attribute the authorship to the Grundworth studio which is known to have been producing erotic postcards in Paris from the 1890s to the 1930s. <br /><br />Like most of the studios engaged in production of erotic photographs and postcards of the time little is known about it as despite the widespread circulation of these cards their production and distribution was illegal in France hence anonymity was essential. Given the time span and a number of different styles the name is unlikely to represent an individual photographer but more likely a group of photographers who were perhaps better known but wanted to hide their real identities.<br /> [Paris, c.1930s]. unknown

[FORNEY'S STUDIO, ABILENE, KANSAS]
ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF MARSHAL THOMAS J. SMITH OF ABILENE KANSAS
Abilene: Forney's Studio n.d. ca 1899. 1899. First edition. 6 1/2" x 4 1/4" silver gelatin photograph cabinet card of Thomas James Smith with an imprint of Forney's Studio of Abilene Kansas on bottom corner and with written information identifying the subject as "Thos. J. Smith Abilene Marshal 1870." Thomas J. Smith also known as Tom "Bear River" Smith 1830-1870 was a lawman in the Old West and briefly the marshal of the cattle town Abilene Kansas. Prior to Smith's appointment as Abilene marshal two St. Louis Missouri policemen had been hired. At that time Abilene was a wild cattle town with murders and shootings occurring daily. The town had numerous saloons and brothels and up until that point a police force was all but nonexistent. The two St. Louis lawmen resigned before their first day of service was complete. Smith arrived in Abilene in late 1869 insisting that he could restore peace to the town using his hands rather than using guns. Smith implemented a law of "no guns in town limits" which was extremely unpopular with many of the cowboys that drifted through town and over the next two months Smith survived two assassination attempts. On November 2 1870 Smith and a temporary deputy believed to be named James McDonald attempted to serve a warrant on two local farmers Andrew McConnell and Moses Miles. The two men were wanted in connection with the murder of another Abilene man John Shea. McDonald and Smith located the suspects in a small settlement ten miles outside of Abilene. A gunfight erupted in which Smith was badly wounded in the chest. Smith returned fire and wounded McConnell. His deputy fled the scene and as Smith lay wounded Moses Miles hit him with the butt of a rifle then took an axe and decapitated him. McConnell and Miles were captured and arrested in March 1871 Andrew McConnell got 12 years in prison and Moses Miles got 16 years in prison. Afterward the town of Abilene returned to lawlessness until the next marshal could be hired - legendary lawman and gunfighter "Wild Bill" Hickok. This cabinet card was sold to raise funds for a monument in Smith's honor. Text on reverse reads THOMAS J. SMITH who in 1870 was marshal and chief of police of Abilene Kansas at which time and place the great Texas cattle trade then centered. He was coldly and cruelly murdered in a cave by two men McConnell and Miles ten miles northeast of Abilene in October 1870 while attempting to arrest McConnell who had shot and killed his neighbor. His remains were interred in the Abilene cemetery. This photograph is sold only for the purpose of using the proceeds to purchase and erect a suitable monument to his memory. J. B. Edwards W. B. Giles C. A. Hodge Committee Abilene Kansas Sept. 28 1899. Good plus with some paper residue ink writing and partial Culver Service stamp on the reverse. Forney's Studio, n.d. [ca 1899]. unknown

[JAPAN - STUDIO PHOTO ALBUM] TAMAMURA, KOZABURO.
Japanese Photograph Album of the Late Meiji Period.
Japan. Circa 1890s. 50 hand-tinted albumen prints 30 captioned with studio stock references mounted on thick gilt-edged card leaves19.5 x 25 cms in an album 27.5 x 35 cms; elaborately lacquered boards scuffed and chipped inlaid with mother of pearl with loss over quarter calf renewed bevelled edges gilt dentelles endpapers gilt-flecked some fading and spotting to the images and toning to the margins of the card leaves but a very good handsomely bound collection.<P> Beautiful studio album containing a collection of 50 hand coloured photos of Japan with a splendid lacquered and decorated cover. The photos were commercially produced images which were sold to foreign visitors who had the studio place photographs in an album of their choice. This album is unusually interesting because unlike many where photographs were more randomly placed the images have been selected and arranged geographically beginning in Tokyo and moving southwards: Nikko Yokohama Miyanoshita & Hakone Lake Mount Fuji Kyoto Osaka Kobe and Nagasaki. <br> <br>There are fine images and portraits of geisha including an uncaptioned image of geisha seated possibly by the Kamo River in Kyoto entertaining a male guest. A lute is placed on the rice mat together with a tray of beer. One of the geisha is looking straight to camera a striking composition. Another uncaptioned in the Kyoto group is likely to be in Arashiyama shows a sandalled figure on a mountain path overlooking the leisure boating below. <br>There are also images of pagoda fishing rice planting street vendors and markets. <br> <br>More than half the photographs appear to be from the studio of the Yokohama based photographer Tamamura Kozaburo c.1856-192 who at his height was described as "the best photographer in Yokohama". As Terry Bennett has attested Tamamura's business strategy of selling souvenir albums of views and costumes to foreigners became a "winning formula". see Terry Bennett "Early Japanese Images" Tuttle 1996 and "Photography in Japan 1853-1912" Tuttle 2006<P> <b>When referring to this item please quote stockid 215089</b> . hardcover

It is likely that they belonged to the family of a doctor named Tanaka Fusa who had a clinic in Nishio town in the Hazu district of Aichi Prefecture. The photos are accompanied by mid-20th century patient registration forms from Dr. Tanaka's clinic. <br> <br>Three of the photos show large group of women approximately 200 in total and were produced by the Kiyokuan Studio in Kyoto a studio established by Kobayashi Teisuke in 1900. They were most likely female high school students on their school excursion to Kyoto each adopting the same hair style Hisashigami style which was very fashionable among high school girls towards the end of the 19th century. Another family group photo bears the mark of well-known Meiji era Kyoto photographer Hori Masumi 1857-1911. Two later photos are of the wedding in the grounds of Kyoto's Heian Jingu of Ueki Ukichi and his bride Ujiko in May 1929. A Ueda Ukichi is listed as a law student at Kansai University in the early 1920s so this may be the same person. There is an early twentieth century photo of a group of schoolboys each carefully named on the covering tissue and a 1929 photo from a Nagoya studio of a group of dignitaries also individually named on the covering sheet.<P> <b>When referring to this item please quote stockid 214646</b> . unknown

[No photographer given - Houston Studio]
MINING PHOTOGRAPHY WEST VIRGINIA A photograph depicting a group of children and four "First Aid Cabinets" produced by the Mine Safety Appliances Company
Fairmont West Virginia: Houston Studio 1930. First Edition. Very good. One albumen print photograph with thin black border about 10" x 8" backed onto linen. In very good condition with some creases nicks and very minor discoloration at the extremities but generally preserved. The photograph is somewhat mysterious depicting a group of fourteen young boys and girls another nine who are a few years older and two male adults. In front of the group are four briefcases. As best we can tell these are labeled "Miner's First Aid Cabinet" and the logo appears to be that of the Mine Safety Appliances Company. Perhaps these were young miners and first aid nurses in training or maybe it was a summer camp. Regardless a nicely sized image which captures youth life in coal country during the height of the coal boom in early 20th century America. Houston Studio unknown

[PHOTOGRAPH - HAND COLOURED]. LAFAYETTE STUDIO.
Crown Prince Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia.London 1935. Matt silver print ca. 28 x 36 cm watercolour pastel gouache and oil paint. Mounted on paper in a passe-partout. Signed "Lafayette" in pencil on the mount. In a wooden frame ca. 53 x 64 cm under glass.
Impressively coloured photographic portrait of the Saudi crown prince Saud 1902-1969 by the eminent London photographic studio Lafayette. Prince Saud the future King Saud of Saudi Arabia had been appointed crown prince in 1933 and fought in the 1934 war against Yemen. After the war his father encouraged him to travel abroad and over the next few years he visited Saudi-Arabia's neighbours Europe and the United States. While in London Prince Saud had his portrait taken by the Lafayette studio originally established in Dublin in 1880. It is no coincidence that Prince Saud chose a firm that had photographed numerous emperors kings sultans earls early movie stars etc. The firm would also provide hand coloured prints on request and the current photograph is an example of the very high quality they provided. The photograph of Prince Saud was coloured by painting over the photograph with watercolours and pastel. A subsequent treatment made it possible to use tiny drops of oil paint to highlight the gold trimming on his robe the jewels and pearls on his sword and the small lights in his eyes. In very good condition with only very minor craquelure. A colour portrait of the future King Saud of Arabia: a photograph enhanced by an expert painter from the leading British firm for the genre.l For Lafayette: Russell Harris Narrated in calm prose. unknown
