The Boers or Afrikaners were a unique type type of enemy – an army of prairie veldt ranchers who fought guerrilla-style on horseback. Their logical counterparts were Canada's mounted police and cowboys and in 1900 Donald Smith better known as Lord Strathcona raised a mounted company of 400 men from western Canada half from the NWMP and half from the horse and cattle ranches. Based in Calgary and under the command of Col. Sam Steele they were called the Strathcona Horse." see p. 27 "Shooting Cowboys - Photographing Canadian Cowboy Culture 1875-1965" by Brock Silversides 1997 Fifth House. The Carbon Studio unknown
