Montreal QC: William Notman & Son 1887. Mounted Photograph. Near Fine. Caption and date of 1887 from the Notman Photographic Archives at McCord who hold a glass plate negative of this image. CPR completed the transcontinental railway in 1885 and employed the Notman studio to photograph the countryside along the newly completed railway. This helped to solicit large groups of wealthy customers into seeing world class tourist attractions via their railway. A gelatin POP photograph measuring 7 x 9.25 inches wide mounted onto a Notman Studio Imperial Cabinet Card measuring 8 x 10 inches wide. Mount is slightly curved photo has some faint spotting. A gentleman in a hat can be seen reclining on one of the rocks beside the river perhaps Mr. Notman or his assistant while behind them the CPR railway bed is visible with the Cariboo Wagon Road and Gold Rush Trail rising up in the background. As head of the CPR William Van Horne famously stated "Since we can't export the scenery we will have to import the tourists." Views such as this helped them to achieve that goal. Three 19th c. photographs of Niagara Falls together creating a virtual panoramic view which includes both the American Falls and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Photos are titled in negative "920 - Horse-Shoe Falls From Canadian Side Niagara" albumen and silver salts print on paper 6 x 9.5 inches wide mounted onto 6.25 x 9.75 inch wide card "923 - Horse-Shoe Falls From Goat Island Niag." albumen and silver salts print on paper 6 x 9.5 inches wide mounted onto 6.25 x 9.75 inch wide card and "931 - American Falls. From Goat Island Niag." gelatin silver chloride print on paper 6-7/8 x 9-1/4 inches wide mounted onto 7-1/8 x 9-1/2 inch wide card. The silver chloride print has some silver mirroring near edges a barely discernible three inch vertical wrinkle at bottom center from original mounting card mount slightly curled verso w. browning. The two albumen photos both have fading near the edges card mount slightly curled with some browning. We found a similar view at the McCord Museum "American Falls from Goat Island Niagara ON about 1870 - VIEW-932" but could not locate this view no. 931. The photo of "Horse-Shoe Falls From Canadian Side Niagara" dates about 1870 according to the McCord catalogue and "923 - Horse-Shoe Falls From Goat Island Niag." being just three views later would date about the same. A nice image with many interesting architectural details a host of carriage drivers horses people in the park and the mast of a ship visible down the street in the harbor. Albumen and silver salts on paper titled in negative "Place d'Armes Montreal" at bottom right. Photo measures 7.5 x 9 inches wide mounted on card measuring 7.5 x 9.25 inches wide. Photo with some fading mostly along bottom edge near title card mount slightly curved with browning verso. McCord Museum has this image in their collection also unsigned as Object Number II-41752 and date it 1876. Wm. Notman unknown
Montreal QC: W. Notman Studio 1886. Mounted Photograph. Good Only. A Builder's Photograph shot just before No. 306 would have been put into service with the CPR. Mammoth size albumen and silver salts on paper print measuring 14-1/2 x 20-7/8 inches wide mounted onto card measuring 22 x 28 inches wide with "W. NOTMAN PHOTO" stamped in blind at bottom right edge. Photo is faded and yellowed card mount appears brittle w. some soil and chips to edges verso w. soil and stains from a previous mounting and framer's notes in pencil. This 4-4-0 CPR locomotive was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company New Shops in Montreal Quebec. It was completed and entered service on October 1886. Its builder's plate number was 1022. A horse-drawn Viking parade float with 16 "Vikings" aboard celebrating "Leif Erikson - Discoverer of America - Year 1000" as they stop to pose with parade officials gathered at bottom left of image. This photo appears to have been taken at the foot of Baker street just below the CPR Station Managers house prior to commencing to parade up the wooden sidewak-lined Baker Street. Date of 1900 inferred from the date ". YEAR 1000" on banner which would have been at the time a 900 year anniversary celebration for Mr. Erikson. Silver gelatin photograph measuring 7-1/2 x 9-3/4 inches wide card mount measures 11-3 /4 x 13-7/8 inches wide printed at lower right corner is "Columbia Studio Nelson B.C." Photograph has two small chips from right side card mount has a few edge bumps traces of soil and an abrasion on right side near chip in photo verso w. a name and stock number in pencil. A nice image of some pretty intense looking characters all about to enjoy a horse-drawn celebration through Nelson BC c. 1900. Columbia Studio unknown
