Im Vordergrund, drei Stufen über dem Betrachter, eine gewichtige Frau, die sich zu zwei im Hintergrund plaudernden Männern umdreht. - Paul Helms (1884-1961), hatte nach einer Lithographenlehre u.a. bei C. O. Czeschka studiert. Ab 1908 lehrte er an der Kunstgewerbeschule am Lerchenfeld in Hamburg. Die Großstadt Hamburg, ihr Hafen und ihre Menschen wurden seine bevorzugten Sujets. Ab Mitte der 1950er Jahre wandte sich Helms von den graphischen Techniken der Ölmalerei zu (vor allem Landschaftsmalerei und Nord- und Ostseemotive)‎

‎Der Blaue Reiter (kurz ?Künstlergemeinschaft Der Blaue Reiter?) wurde 1911 von Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke und Alexej von Jawlensky gegründet. Die Bewegung gilt als Expressionismus. Es gab keine wirklich organisierte Bewegung. Den Teilnehmern ging es mehr um die Aufrechterhaltung einer freundschaftlichen Bindung. Die neuen Kunstideen der Gruppe wurden 1912 in München vom Verleger R. Piper im Almanach ?Der Blaue Reiter? veröffentlicht. Alle Gründer der Gruppe waren in dieser Ausgabe mit Arbeiten vertreten. Der Name der Gemäldegruppe geht auf das Cover dieses Almanachs zurück, das Kandinskys Gemälde ?Der Blaue Reiter? aus dem Jahr 1903 zeigt. Die Trennung von der Neuen Künstlervereinigung im Jahr 1911 führte zu einer Wanderausstellung, Die erste Ausstellung der Redaktion des Blauen Reiters. Von der Galerie Tannhäuser in München aus besuchten wir die Galerie Der Sturm in Berlin und das Folkwang Museum in Hagen. Als nächstes folgten Köln und Frankfurt.‎

‎tentoonstelling catalogus Masereel ? Verhaeren: dialoog in zwart en wit, Frans Masereel wordt beschouwd als een van de opmerkelijke Belgische kunstenaars van de 20e eeuw. Masereel heeft zich tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog laten kennen als een geëngageerd pacifistisch kunstenaar: hij maakte honderden spotprenten waarin hij het nietsontziende oorlogsgeweld en het sociale onrecht aan de kaak stelde. Met de creatie van 25 images de la passion d?un homme (1918) realiseerde hij de allereerste beeldroman. Nadien volgden Mon livre d?heures, L'Idée, Souvenirs de mon pays, L?Oeuvre, La Sirène Masereel heeft de kunst van de houtsnede als het ware opnieuw uitgevonden: in zijn krachtige zwart-wit-composities wist hij een zeker realisme te combineren met een expressionnistische uitdrukkingsvorm. Naast zijn vele houtsneden maakte Masereel ook tekeningen, schilderijen, aquarellen, ontwerpen voor mozaïeken, decors -De houtsnijder en graficus Frans Masereel (1889-1972) heeft talloze literaire werken geïllustreerd, maar het poëtische werk van Emile Verhaeren heeft toch een bijzondere betekenis gehad in zijn oeuvre. Het is dan ook geen toeval dat het eerste geïllustreerde boek van Masereel er een van Verhaeren was: Quinze poèmes (1917). De twee geïllustreerde bundels met kortverhalen in hun kenmerkende expressionistische stijl ? Cinq récits (1920) en Le Travailleur étrange (1921) ? vormen een van hoogtepunten uit het oeuvre van de kunstenaar. Het Verhaeren-portret uit 1920 geldt als een bijna iconisch beeld van de dichter. catalogue d'exposition Masereel - Verhaeren : dialogue en noir et blanc, Frans Masereel est considéré comme l'un des artistes belges les plus remarquables du XXe siècle. Masereel s'est fait connaître en tant qu'artiste pacifiste engagé pendant la Première Guerre mondiale : il a réalisé des centaines de dessins dénonçant la violence impitoyable de la guerre et l'injustice sociale. Il crée le tout premier roman graphique avec 25 images de la passion d?un homme (1918).
