Gebonden, Hardcover, 175 pages, met prachtige illustraties. ISBN 9789055447534. Beeldhouwer Johan Tahon (°1965, Menen) onderzoekt al meer dan vijfentwintig jaar de menselijke figuur. Zijn sculpturen hebben ondertussen een heel parcours afgelegd. Hoogtijd werd het dus voor een eerste boek dat de gehele creatieve periode van Tahon zou bundelen en dat boek is Observatorium geworden, recent uitgegeven door Ludion. Naast een oeuvrecatalogus van de periode 1982-2008 biedt het heldere essays van Paul Depondt en Wim van Mulders, fotoreeksen van Stefan Vanfleteren en Mirjam Devriendt en een reeks gedichten van Peter Verhelst. Elk op hun beurt bezochten ze Tahons atelier en proberen ze zijn artistieke praktijk in essentie te grijpen en vast te leggen. Deze caleidoscopische blik op zijn atelier biedt inzicht in zijn werkproces en benadrukt hoe belangrijk die creatieplek, die broedplek van ideeen en waarnemingen, uiteindelijk voor hem is. Het boek is fraai vormgegeven door Luc Derycke. Hij zorgde ervoor dat elke tekst- en beeldbijdrage zijn eigen karakter behoudt. De teksten zijn amper geillustreerd, daartegenover staat dat de beelden van Vanfleteren en van Devriendt volledige pagina?s innemen. Vanfleteren maakte sfeerbeelden van Johan Tahon in het Turkse Iznik, waar de kunstenaar bij wijlen verblijft en werkt. Terwijl Mirjam Devriendt zijn werkruimte in Oudenaarde fotografeerde. Deze bijdragen vormen het middelste gedeelte van het boek. Voor de cover, het eerste en het laatste gedeelte selecteerde de kunstenaar eigen foto, werk- en schetsmateriaal. Vandaar dat dit boek je confronteert met een boek in een boek: een ?kunstboek? dat wil reflecteren over een oeuvre, in een ?kunstenaarsboek? dat als kunstwerk functioneert. Opmerkelijk is de aantrekkelijke witte cover die oogt als een dierenhuid. Met de rood geblokletterde titel Observatorium erop, vat deze cover bijzonder treffend de micro- en macrokosmos van Tahon samen: het lijfelijke, het tactiele, het dierlijke en het onmetelijke, het grootse, het immateriele komen er naast elkaar voor. Door het grote kunstenaarsboekgehalte reikt het boek een kijkervaring aan. Het enige nadeel daarvan is dat het zeer weinig gedetailleerde afbeeldingen van werken bevat. Het boek is geen platenboek. De oeuvrecatalogus vangt dit probleem maar deels op, omdat de werken daarin zoals gebruikelijk klein zijn afgebeeld. Welke inzichten bieden de teksten? De auteurs Paul DePondt en Wim Van Mulders plaatsen zijn werk voor het eerst in een breder kunsthistorisch discours. Paul Depondt vergeleek het atelier van Tahon met dat van toonaangevende kunstenaars als Giacometti en Bacon. Hij onderzocht welke meerwaarde het kunstwerk krijgt als het in zijn oorspronkelijke ontstaanscontext wordt bekeken. Wim Van Mulders kadert het oeuvre van Tahon niet alleen binnen de traditie van de klassieke beeldhouwkunst, maar hij plaatst het ook tegenover de dominante stromingen in de twintigste-eeuwse kunstgeschiedenis, waarin de readymades van Marcel Duchamp, het formalisme van de modernisten en de teloorgang van de grote thema?s en de fragmentatie van de postmodernisten sterk de huidige perceptie van de actuele kunst hebben bepaald. Hij stelt zijn eigen perceptie kritisch in vraag en kijkt met open blik naar een oeuvre dat de grote thema?s allesbehalve schuwt. Voorts zet hij Tahons werk op een lijn met de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van de klassieke beeldhouwkunst van de twintigste eeuw, zoals Rodin, Brancusi, Giacometti en Lehmbruck, die trouwens allen grote thema?s in hun werk behandelden. Het is een van de eerste pogingen om Tahons werk de plaats te geven die het toekomt. Verder wordt het boek nog verrijkt door het meeslepend gedicht De zoo van het denken van Peter Verhelst, die met zijn suggestieve, beeldend taalgebruik een verrukkelijke cocktail brouwt van de lichte en donkere kantjes van het denken, dat ongetwijfeld raakt aan het denken van Tahon. Autograph letter signed by the painter Johan Barthold Jongkind, to Pierre-Firmin Martin, known as "le père Martin", dealer of Impressionist paintings, having participated in the organisation of the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874. 3 pages on a sheet of paper, a lack of paper on the second part of the sheet. The painter wrote this letter to his merchant friend in 1861, from Parize-le-Châtel, situated about fifteen kilometres south of Nevers. Renowned for its healthy air, the village was one of Jongkind's favourite holiday and study spots. Jongkind describes his posing sessions in Saint-Parize, which gave rise to magnificent watercolours and oil paintings (La ferme à Saint Parize le Châtel, 1861, coll. part; Saint Parize le Châtel, 1869, Musée du Petit Palais): "[. ...] I wanted to tell you again that I wanted to draw oxen, but I assure you that these fellows are not easy to paint, my ideas are to place them in landscapes that I intend to paint". The painter envisages a stay in a spa town to calm his chronic nervous disorders, and evokes his providential patron, Madame Joséphine Fresser: "I will take the waters with the hope that it will do me good, fortunately I receive a lot of kindness from Madame Fresser, giving me the favour of living more economically". Le peintre écrit cette lettre à son ami marchand en 1861, depuis Parize-le-Châtel, situé à une quinzaine de kilomètres au sud de Nevers. Réputé pour son air sain, le village fut l'un des lieux de villégiature et d'étude favoris de Jongkind. Jongkind décrit ses séances de pose à Saint-Parize, qui donnèrent lieu à de magnifiques aquarelles et huiles sur toile (La ferme à Saint Parize le Châtel, 1861, coll. part. ; Saint Parize le Châtel, 1869, musée du Petit Palais) : "[...] je voulais encore vous dire que j'ai voulu dessiné [sic] des boeufs. mais je vous assure ces gaillards ne sont pas commodes pour les faire peindre mes idées sont de les placer dans des paysages que l'ai l'intention de vouloir peindre". Le peintre envisage un séjour dans une ville d'eaux pour calmer ses troubles nerveux chroniques, et évoque sa providentielle protectrice, Madame Joséphine Fresser : "Je prendrai les eaux avec l'espoir qu'ils [sic] me feront du bien, heureusement que je reçois tout plein de bontés de Madame Fresser, ce qui me donne fatalement la faveur de vivre plus économiquement. [...]".
