4to., Facsimile Re-issue, with a frontispiece and numerous illustrations; cloth, a very good, clean copy in the dustwrapper, the latter lightly chafed at extremities. First published in 1938, the author's first prose work is an entertaining survey (architectural, historical and social) of the Oxford he knew and adored as an undergraduate. BEVAN G. Phillips
Handbook to the County of Kent. Containing full Information concerning all its favourite Places of Resort, both on the Coast and Inland. Sixth Edition. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY OF THE SIXTH EDITION
8vo., Sixth Edition, with 2 plans (one folding) and large folding map, small neat contemporary signature on half-title; original brown cloth, sides with multiple frame border in blind enclosing title lettered in gilt, gilt back, backstrip a little faded (but all gilt wholly legible), a very good, bright, clean copy. With 32pp of trade advertisements (many illustrated) bound in at end. First published in 1876, 'Bevan' is probably the best of the later nineteenth century pocket or 'portmanteau' guides to the county. These were deliberately condensed, both in size and content, to provide ultimately portable information for those visiting by rail and road. A seventh and final edition appeared in 1891 by which time the larger and weightier guides were beginning to dominate. Bennett, p.204.
