KENT William
An Encyclopaedia of London. [Revised Edition]. '[Festival of Britain' edition]. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY OF THE 'FESTIVAL OF BRITAIN' EDITION
8vo., Best Edition, with a frontispiece and 15 plates, some moderate offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; red cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy in dustwrapper, the latter lightly frayed and creased at edges. First published in 1937, 'Kent' is the most detailed single-volume encyclopaedia of London and an invaluable period guide to places, institutions and infrastructure. This substantially revised edition was produced to coincide with the Festival of Britain, albeit that the major South Bank site (frontispiece) was still under construction. It also includes coverage of wartime depredations. Later editions suffered from the usual economies of scale and production. A very nice copy and uncommon in this condition.

Frances Mary Richarson Currer's copy in a fine morocco binding. A choice copy with a fine provenance and bound in a sumptuous full green morocco binding. "In 1656 King published in London The Vale-Royall of England, or, The County Palatine of Chester Illustrated, for which he wrote the preface. In it he printed for the first time two essays on Chester written by William Smith and William Webb more than forty years earlier, as well as an essay on the Isle of Man by James Chaloner. This book was illustrated with etchings mostly by Wenceslaus Hollar, which were unsigned and for this reason have often been attributed to King himself."?(Oxford DNB). Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861) was England's earliest female bibliophile and was described by Dibdin as the "head of all female book collectors in Europe.". Currer inherited both the library of her great grandfather, Richard Richardson (1663-1741) and her grandfather Mathew Wilson of Eshton Hall. With the additions added by Currer the library became of considerable importance, and in its day, it was surpassed only by those of Earl Spencer, the duke of Devonshire, and the duke of Buckingham. Most of the books in her library were auctioned at Sotheby's in 1862, realising ?6,000. A second sale took place in 1916 which raised more than ?3700, and the residue of her library was sold in 1979 and 1994. Provenance: Contemporary signature of Joseph Hopkinson to head of engraved title; The front pastedown has the armorial bookplates of Mathew Wilson and his grand-daughter Frances Mary Richardson Currer. Wing, K488; Upcott I, p.61; Cubbon I, p.461.

KING E.
Old Times Re-visited in the Borough and Parish of Lymington, Hants. Second Edition. FROM THE LIBRARY OF PROFESSOR BILES OF THE 'TITANIC' ENQUIRY
Roy. 8vo., Second and Best Edition, with portrait frontispiece, title in red and black, and 21 plates (one double-page); original buckram gilt, gilt back, bevelled edges, uncut, covers lightly age-marked else a very good, internally spotless copy. King's work, first published in 1879, immediately established itself as the standard popular reference on the ancient New Forest town; local interest generated the inevitable additions and corrections, but the planned second edition, incorporating the numerous addenda, was deferred by the author's death. This best edition, compiled and published by the author's son from his father's meticulous notes, benefits from much new material and many fresh illustrations. This copy was formerly in the library of Professor [Sir] J H Biles, the eminent naval architect [of 'Titanic' Enquiry fame], and bears his elegant blind-embossed art nouveau bookplate (with press-mark in manuscript) on front paste-down. John Harvard Biles (1854-1933) was apprenticed at Portsmouth Dockyard, studied at the Royal School of Naval Architecture and joined the Admiralty in 1877. His talents were quickly recognised and in 1880 (at the age of only 26) he was appointed chief designer to the major shipbuilder J&G Thomson on Clydebank where he created the revolutionary designs for the 'City of Paris' and 'City of New York'. In 1883 he left to join the foundling consultancy established by Sir Edward Reed, where he quickly became a driving force (the consultancy continues to the present day as Sir J H Biles & Co.). In 1891 he was awarded the Chair of Naval Architecture at Glasgow University (then perhaps the most prestigious such appointment in the world) where he devoted himself to teaching and consultancy on a world-wide scale. IN VIEW OF HIS EMINENCE IN THE FIELD OF SHIP DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, PROFESSOR BILES WAS AN ASSESSOR IN THE ENQUIRY INTO THE LOSS OF RMS 'TITANIC' AND SUBSEQUENTLY HE SERVED ON THE BOARD OF TRADE ENQUIRY INTO LIFEBOATS AND LIFE-SAVING APPLIANCES WHICH AROSE AS A RESULT OF THE TITANIC LOSS. For his services to the 'Titanic' Enquiry and naval architecture in general, Biles was knighted in 1913
