Osburn Id 1930. Very good. Folding map 27 x 42 inches. A couple of short separations along folds. Several contemporary pencil manuscript annotations. Light tanning and dust soiling. Scarce map of tunnels and several surface constructions related to the Mineral Point mine in Osburn Idaho operated by the Coeur D'Alene Mines Corporation. The map dates to 1930 and illustrates the tunnel system and existing surface structures of the mine colored in several different shades. The Coeur D'Alene Corporation was organized in 1928 and still exists today as the global corporation Coeur Mining although it divested of its mining interests located near its namesake city in the early 2000s. This map therefore constitutes an important record of one of its earliest mining efforts. unknown books

With complete index.<br/><br/>Bookplate reveals that this book is from the collection of Dennis Wheatley 1897-1977 a best-selling English author of thrillers many with an occult or "black magic" theme e.g. The Devil Rides Out 1934. He was also a noted collector of antique books and nowadays there is a great deal of artistic appreciation directed towards his personal bookplate. It was illustrated by F.C. Papé as a tribute to Wheatley's mentor Gordon Eric Gordon-Tombe; in his design Gordon Eric is depicted as a satyr seated on a stump beside a bottle of champagne and a saxophone as he delivers some words of wisdom to a young man based on Wheatley himself. This book was the first digest of the London's laws and guide to its courts after the revisions of the city laws from 1647 and 1658. A useful work that gathered a great deal of disparate information it is a valuable resource today for students of seventeenth-century London and its legal system. First edition. </p> <p> First Printed Edition of the Patent for the the Electronic Digital Computer and the first comprehensive description of the first general purpose electronic computer the ENIAC. Because the U.S. version of the patent was not granted until 1964 the English version of the patent with text and illustrations virtually identical to the U.S. patent was published nearly ten years before the U.S. patent. Since no prior patent on an electronic computer existed the ENIAC patent was a general patent which included the first description in legal language of the design and operation of an electronic computer. The description was extremely thorough and illustrated on 65 remarkable diagrams many of which had multiple images. Extremely Rare—this is the first copy we have handled in our five-plus decades in the trade despite our strong interest in the history of computing.</p> <p> The ENIAC Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer commissioned by the U. S. Army's Ballistics Research Laboratory was designed by Pres Eckert and John Mauchly and constructed at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Engineering during the last years of World War II. The ENIAC came on line in the spring of 1945 just as the war was ending and for the next three years it remained the only operational electronic digital computer in the world. Eckert and Mauchly the machine's creators would go on to found the Electronic Control Company the world's first electronic computer manufacturing firm which produced the first electronic digital computers sold commercially in the United States.</p> <p> The ENIAC was not a stored-program machine but in January 1944 Eckert came up with what he later called his "big idea": "the idea of the stored instruction sequence or program using a single fast memory for both data and instruction with no distinction between registers used for many purposes" quoted in Origins of Cyberspace p. 535. In August 1944 while still working on the ENIAC Eckert and Mauchly proposed the construction of a stored-program machine the EDVAC based on Eckert's new design. In March 1946 just before construction began on the EDVAC Eckert and Mauchly parted ways with the Moore School over a dispute about intellectual property claims retaining patent rights to the ENIAC. The next year Eckert and Mauchly filed for a patent on the ENIAC that included the stored-program concept; this essentially represented "a general patent on the stored-program electronic digital computer" Origins of Cyberspace p. 55. </p> <p> The British patent on the ENIAC was granted on 26 May 1954 nearly a decade before the American patent issued on 4 February 1964. On 19 October 1973 after a six-year legal battle Judge Earl R. Lawson invalidated the ENIAC patent on the grounds that Eckert and Mauchly had derived their ideas from an earlier computer pioneer John Atanasoff who invented a special-purpose electronic computer in the 1930s. This landmark decision placed the concept of the electronic stored-program computer into the public domain with enormous positive consequences for the computer industry.</p> <p>. A very good copy.<br/><br/>The frontispiece is a folding photographically produced chart; there are five original mounted photographs approximately 4 x 5 inches or the reverse. A very early prospectus or annual report for the purpose of a public stock offering by Fairchild following the founding of the firm in 1924. The frontispiece is a chart of the various divisions of Fairchild and a portion of this report is devoted to the Fairchild Aerial Camera Corporation which was among the most significant pioneers of aerial photography; several of their planes were designed specifically for use in aerial photography. The photographs illustrate the "K-8" aerial mapping camera and the manufacturing facilities. This collection of proceedings by the Bunhill Fields Preservation Committee documents the Corporation of London's efforts to ensure the safety of the Bunhill Fields Burial Ground as the Corporation's lease was nearing its end Christmas 1867. Bunhill had been a burying ground of Nonconformists and other denominations since the sixteenth century. With the work of the committee the Corporation obtained an Act of Parliament in 1867 preserving the burial ground as an open landscaped space with seating gardens and the restoration of some of it most noteworthy monuments including John Bunyan Daniel Defoe and William Blake. The appendix contains a reprint of a rare tract from 1717 "Inscription on the Tombs in the Dissenters' Burial Place near Bunhill Fields." Some wear to edges of binding else fine. unknown books

Fourteen 8 x 10 inch approximate photographs plus "title page" photograph. Boards. A loose leaf binder with photographs depicting testing of crates and the attendant necessary equipment. Photos show a "large revolving drum" construction shop a compression machine what looks like a drop test chassis with crate affixed two photos of several men in a laboratory using a microscope and several other instruments a blueprint in progress two closeup images of instruments including a mullen tester a very large press used to compress pieces of plywood together testing in action and several other images. No doubt used as a sales tool demonstrating how thoroughly the company could build and test crates for reliable performance.<br/><br/>The tenth edition of Industrial Research Laboratories of the United States 1956 locates the Atlas Plywood Corporation's Department of Research and Design at 431 Market Street Lawrence Mass. the same address as on the card cover of this folder hence our approximate dating. There are also US Navy submarine periscopic astrotrackers commercial photoelectric sextants star tracking systems etc. While there are some excellent images of some of the equipment but their very nature there are no specifications to be found. Minor soiling to covers generally bright and clean. Wraps. A sales brochure highlighting the six most important portions of this system designed for the Boeing RC-135A jet aircraft for advanced photographic mapping systems. Today's air reconaissance vehicles put this system to shame but the brochure is fairly technical with specifications and diagrams for each of the systems including the "Airborne Digital Computer" with it's 8448 word memory and 537.6 kc clock rate. Wikipedia notes that "The first RC-135 variant the RC-135A was ordered in 1962 by the United States Air Force to replace the Boeing RB-50 Superfortress.Four RC-135As 63-8058 through 8061 were photo mapping platforms utilized briefly by the Air Photographic & Charting Service based at Turner Air Force Base Georgia and later at Forbes Air Force Base Kansas as part of the 1370th Photographic Mapping Wing. The mission was soon assumed by satellites and the RC-135As were de-modified and used as staff transports. In the early 1980s they were further converted to tankers with the designation KC-135D of the same basic configuration as the KC-135E plus some remaining special mission equipment. Due to delays in reinstalling their original equipment the RC-135As were the last of the entire C-135 series delivered to the USAF. The Boeing model number for the RC-135A is 739-700."<br/><br/>As with many expensive military items the brochure is quite interesting visually - with excellent conceptual art detailing how the system was to be used. This system was never really used however as advancements in optics and satellite technology soon overshadowed airplane borne methods for this sort of work. It even has a layout for a combination kitchen laundry that will be most efficient.<br/><br/>A useful source for anyone interested in the state of the art in 1945 and what were the hot topics manufacturers felt necessary to address at the time. In 1967 NREC created an innovative program to automate design and analysis of Radial Turbomachinery and published the results in two volumes. Volume I was a theoretical treatment of the system "A Computing System for the Design and Analysis of Radial Turbomachinery Vol 1: Bases and Capabilities of the System". Volume II dealt with the computer program itself. In 1972 Volume 2 originally issued as a large format paperback was re-issued in 2 volumes IIA and IIB both in hardcover for ease of use. We offer here Volume IIB ONLY containing the sample program that illustrates the overall operation of the program.
