BARBIER George; MIOMANDRE Francis de.
Designs on the Dances of Vaslav Nijinsky.
London C.W. Beaumont 1913. . First English edition number 131 from a limited edition of 400; 4to 33.5 x 28 cm; translated by C.W. Beaumont title 8pp. vignette 12 full-page coloured illustrations by Barbier on vellum printed on rectos only printer's leaf at end; original pictorial wrappers edges are slightly worn repairs to spine otherwise a good copy. Barbier's wonderful illustrations of the legendary dancer in Scheherazade Carnaval and l'Après-midi d'un Faune . 'The designs although somewhat fantastic in treatment do convey the impression produced by Nijinsky in his famous characters' Beaumont. 'In his brief time Nijinsky was the most famous male dancer in the world a pre-eminence due in part to his extraordinary virtuosity. But it was not his virtuosity alone that made him such a powerful stage presence. As contemporary reports make clear Nijinsky was a great and unusual actor. The ideal Fokine interpreter he was able to expand a simple choreographic design into a rich dramatic portrait using in keeping with Fokine's dicta the whole body as an expressive instrument. Nijinsky's influence as a dancer was immediate and huge. That ballet nearly extinguished artistically in western Europe was revived in this century is due to him and other great dancers of his generation such as Anna Pavlova and Karsavina as well as to Diaghilev. That male ballet utterly extinguished was also revived is due to him preeminently. Nijinsky was the first real ballet star of the male sex that Europe had seen since the retirement of Auguste Vestris nearly a century earlier. He initiated a renaissance.' Barbier George
Falbalas and Franfreluches
Paris: Meynial 1925. First Edition. George Barbier. A complete and excellent set of the five annual issues illustrated with a total of sixty beautiful pochoir plates complete with decorated pochoir title pages. 'Falbalas and Franfreluches' Frippery and Finery: Fashion Diaries represents a literary and artistic collaboration of unusual elegance and sophistication. French illustrator George Barbier 1882 - 1932 spared no effort in the making of this beautiful collection using the finest pigments and up to thirty stencils per print to create images of the highest quality reflecting fashionable themes of the day. The plates portray romance amidst exotic lands and ages past including a native American idyll on the Missouri a languid mistress cocooned in a hammock in the tropical Antilles high baroque debauchery and of course a myriad of lovers depicted in Paris at the height of the chic 1920s. Each annual includes twelve pages of fine writing by Barbier's contemporaries in the Parisian scene including work by the great French novelist Colette 1873 -1954 and the brilliant comic actress Cecile Sorel 1873 - 1966. . A famed designer with many celebrated works in his portfolio 'Falbalas and Franfreluches' was the one publication project George Barbier ever worked on that was entirely his own his playful masterpiece. Barbier retained creative control over the design and print-making production process; the result is a magnificent testament to pochoir printing and art deco design. Five annual issues bound in their original glassine decorated pochoir wrappers each issue comprising twelve letterpress pages with a separate decorated title page and twelve pochoir plates measuring 246 x 155 mm. All issues remain fine and fresh lovingly preserved in a felt-lined black cloth clamshell box with paper label to spine. All five volumes are in fine condition. An excellent set. <br/><br/> Meynial hardcover

Journal des Dames et des Modes
1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION OF ALL 79 ISSUES WITH 186 HAND-COLORED PLATES by some of the most famous artists of the era. Number 884 each issue from the same set of only 1250 sets on Holland paper out of a total edition of 1279. IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS IN FINE CONDITION. "The Journal des Dames et des Modes lasted only two years the first issue appeared on 1 June 1912 and the last on 1 August 1914. This stylish periodical was issued regularly three times a month and ceased publication upon the outbreak of the First World War. With its expensive layout its society columns its poetic texts its colourful annotations and its fashion reports it represented the last brilliant refined impartial and aestheticizing impulse of a happy and optimistic society occupying the centre of the stage in the period that has aptly been called the 'belle poque'. It was essentially the testimony the history--illustrated or rather 'clothed' and narrated--of the customs ideas and ideals of a society and a period. "Every issue carefully reviewed all the current novelties of fashion and every issue carried coloured stencil prints reproducing the latest conceptions of the fashion designers." For the text "the magazine could count on the collaboration of the best known writers and littrateurs of the time" including Henri Duvernois Marcel Boulenger Paul Margueritte Jean Cocteau and many others. The artistic contributions "included the works of some outstanding artists and many promising young ones. Most frequent in his appearance and outstanding for the quality of his illustrations was Georges Barbier." Other artists included Lon Bakst Bernard Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi H. Robert Dammy Paul Iribe Charles Martin and Fernand Simon. Christina Nuzzi Parisian Fashion from the "Journal des Dames et des Modes". A fine complete set of this celebrated periodical which although published in a small format due to wartime austerity is nevertheless extremely luxurious. First edition royal 8vo 11 issues all published 60 full-page hors text colour pochoir lithographs by Jean Saudé colour illustrations in the text; original titled and illustrated wrappers. A rare complete set of this monthly periodical significant both for its text and its Art Deco imagery. George Barbier 1882-1932 was the supreme decorative designer of the Art Deco movement. His drawings were rendered into print by Jean Saudé the leading exponent of pochoir whose prints have a vibrancy of colour that has rarely been matched. Colas 1362; Hiler 403. BARBIER George illustrator; de LACLOS Choderlos.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
Paris Le Vasseur 1934. . Limited edition number 559 or 720 copies; 2 vols 4to 26.6 x 19.9 cm; 20 pochoir plates and illustrations; discreet embossed motto to each half-title fine; publisher's pictorial wrappers spines toned slight rubbed at ends otherwise a fine set board slip-case partial splits to one end but still serviceable in all an excellent set; half-title title v 219pp.; half-title title 217pp. Barbier's last major work. That Barbier would turn his attention to Choderlos de Laclos' great novel of sexual intrigue was inevitable; he was even prepared to illustrate the text rather than use it as a point of departure for his own decorative compositions as in other works. Though he did not neglect the opportunities for decorative treatment of setting and costume that the novel provided he stuck to the narrative and presented all the big scenes in its intricate plot. In doing so Barbier gives us the finest illustrations of the novel since Monnet and Gérard's 1796 edition. Paris, Le Vasseur, 1934. unknown

Barbier Georges. Preface by Edmond Jaloux. Frontis portrait of Barbier by Charles Martin
Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le Thtre
Paris: Bloch and Meynial 1927. Limited First Edition. Heavy Wrappers. . Very Good Plus/Good. No. 185 of 275 copies. 4to. 32 by 24 cm. 25 tipped-in pochoir costume plates by Barbier. Lettered tissue guards. Colas 218. The artwork is all dated to the early post-World War One period into the early 1920s. Captured here is the fantasy spun by the costuming so at odds with the parsimonious theatrical zeitgeist of the present when it seems so much of classic theater and opera is willfully updated to the unglamorous present day. Not that the costumes here are entirely unrelated to the then contemporary styles -- one can discern the cross-fertilization of costuming with fashion effortlessly though through Barbier's fluent presentation. Barbier focuses on the escapist element of theater and his renderings usher us on this excursion. The plays represented include works by Rostand and Hugo among others. Original pictorial wrappers. Closed tear of joints by extremities with the longer tear at the base about 6 cm in length. Glassine dust jacket mostly intact but with several tears and chips especially by the lower portion of the rear cover and then by the spine extremities and neighboring joints. Frontis portrait of Barbier has flattened cornered crease. Otherwise the plates most importantly are very clean and bright. <br/><br/> Bloch and Meynial unknown

This stylish periodical was issued regularly three times a month and ceased publication upon the outbreak of the First World War. With its expensive layout its society columns its poetic texts its colourful annotations and its fashion reports it represented the last brilliant refined impartial and aestheticizing impulse of a happy and optimistic society occupying the centre of the stage in the period that has aptly been called the 'belle époque'. The artistic contributions "included the works of some outstanding artists and many promising young ones. Most frequent in his appearance and outstanding for the quality of his illustrations was Georges Barbier." Other artists included Léon Bakst Bernard Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi H.
