‎<p>First edition. Barbier designed the sets and costumes for the Bouffes-Parisiens production of Maurice Rostand's Casanova in February 1919. The 24 fine costume plates here are coloured by Jacomet et compagnie.<br />The commission for Casanova was an important moment in Barbier's artistic career leading to commissions with theatres the Ballet Russes and the Folies Bergère. Other successes followed and for a time he was the most sought-after costume designer in Paris recognized as the theatrical artist 'who better than any other had captured the mood of the age' Gordon Ray.</p><p>4to 245 × 190 mm pp. 4 iv 2. 24 pochoir coloured plates some with gold and silver. Nijinsky is depicted here in Scheherazade Carnaval and L'Après-midi d'un Faune. <br /><br />'The designs although somewhat fantastic in treatment do convey the impression produced by Nijinsky in his famous characters' Beaumont.<br /><br />'In his brief time Nijinsky was the most famous male dancer in the world a pre-eminence due in part to his extraordinary virtuosity. But it was not his virtuosity alone that made him such a powerful stage presence. As contemporary reports make clear Nijinsky was a great and unusual actor. The ideal Fokine interpreter he was able to expand a simple choreographic design into a rich dramatic portrait using in keeping with Fokine's dicta the whole body as an expressive instrument. Nijinsky's influence as a dancer was immediate and huge. That ballet nearly extinguished artistically in western Europe was revived in this century is due to him and other great dancers of his generation such as Anna Pavlova and Karsavina as well as to Diaghilev. That male ballet utterly extinguished was also revived is due to him preeminently. Nijinsky was the first real ballet star of the male sex that Europe had seen since the retirement of Auguste Vestris nearly a century earlier. He initiated a renaissance.' Decorative pochoir title page 12 full page pochoir plates and front cover colour illustrations by George Barbier. Complete. Georges Barbier 1882-1932 was at the forefront of the Art Deco movement and his images have become icons of an era of unsurpassed glamour elegance and decadence. His Falbalas et Fanfreluches 1922-1926 graphically display the artist's intense interest in fashion both of his and earlier ages as well as his sharp sense of humour. The issue for 1923 features the essay 'Modes' by Colette; the remaining essays are by the Comtesse de Noailles Cécile Sorel Gérard d'Houville and the Baronne de Brimont. The poems of Verlaine's Fêtes galantes first published in 1869 took inspiration from the pastorals of Watteau as well as the sumptuous fantasies of Fragonard and Boucher while drawing characters from the Italian traditions of the commedia dell'arte. Barbier's sensibilities made him the perfect artist to reinterpret Verlaine for the 1920s.</p><p>Large 4to 300 × 230 mm pp. 4 100 4 plus 20 coloured pochoir plates. First edition. 4to. 6 original parts comprising January to June 1914 the second year of this periodical 61 hand-coloured lithograph plates en pochoir by Barbier and others later cream cloth lightly soiled.<br /> It may have been short-lived but the Gazette du Bon Ton was hugely influential reflecting all the latest developments in fashion and lifestyle at the beginning of the twentieth century at a time when styles changed dramatically in the space of a few years. The magazine was only available to subscribers at a price which equals $425 per year in today's money thereby creating a very exclusive image. Lucien Vogel the editor aimed to establish fashion as an art form and also to create 'good taste' for the Parisian elite. Publication was suspended in 1915 due to World War I and resumed in 1920 continuing through 1925. <br /><br />Contributing artists included all the greatest names of the day such as Dufy Bakst Barbier and Brunelleschi etc and these artists would depict the haute couture in a narrative and dramatic style using vivid colours and the pochoir technique on special handmade paper. Many of the designs were idealistic leisure scenes of the well-to-do illustrating the latest creations of Paris vintage fashion houses such as Worth Lanvin Doucet Poiret Callot Soeurs Paquin and Beers often without explanatory text. Illustrated with five in-text drawings and six splendid pochoir plates by George Barbier this fifth and last issue of "La Guirlande des Mois" contains a poem by René Boylesve Vers l'Absente and four short stories La Sphère Enchanté; La Guêpe; Madame Fleur; L'"Imbroïlle" de l'Opéra by respectively Albert Flament Gérard d'Houville René Bizet and George Barbier. The "Gazette du Bon Ton" was a leading fashion magazine published from 1912 to 1925 the highlight of which were 10 colored plates in each issue. The magazine signed exclusive contracts with seven of Paris's top couture houses Cheruit Doeuillet Doucet Paquin Poiret Redfern and Worth so that the designers' fashions were shown only in the pages of the Gazette. First edition first printing of this rare lady's almanac issued for the first American department store: Wanamaker's and illustrated by George Barbier 1882-1932 a painter and artist who produced many illustrations for fashion and theatre costumes and set. Uncommon the only copy listed institutionally is located by World Cat at the Morgan Library in New York. It features a calendar several blank pages for personal notes and a collection of poems including some by Ronsard La Fontaine and Voltaire. Sextodecimo. 4 plates coloured in pochoir and by hand in greys and white after Barbier and 3 lithographic plates. Original gilt paper-covered boards colour-printed art-déco pictorial silk onlays to boards and spine pink endpapers gilt edges. Housed in the publisher-issued slipcase with matching silk onlays. A hint of wear to extremities joints partially split at foot of spine the silk onlays otherwise bright and clean internally fresh and unmarked. A remarkably well-preserved copy in the original slipcase bottom panel expertly reattached slight wear to extremities a little rubbed else very good. hardcover‎

Size 24.5 x 19.0 cm. = A unique original aquarelle by the French artist Georges Augustin Barbier 1882-1932. Barbier was one of the foremost French Art Deco artists. "By epitomizing the more refined fantasies of the Parisian world of pleasure . he became the most haunting of Art Deco book artists" Ray. Barbier illustrated luxurious editions of several books including Les Liaisons Dangereuses Les Plus Belles Heures d'Amour de Casanova and l'Escapade. He also designed theatre costumes but he is perhaps best-known for his haute couture illustrations for such magazines as Journal des Dames et des Modes and Gazette de Bon Ton. The present drawing may well be made for publication in the Bon Ton as it features many illustrations by Barbier in the same style i.e. without a background in order to put emphasis on the model and her clothes. Signed: George as often Barbier 1924. A small blind-stamp of paper makers J. Whatman in the lower left corner and lower left edges a bit irregular for being uncut; some very weak toning but generally in excellent condition.
