‎Paris: aux bureaux du Journal des dames 1912-13. First editions number 807 of 1250 copies. This journal which borrowed both the title and format of La Mésangère's periodical of a hundred years before was founded by Tom Antonginigini the secretary friend and biographer of the poet and collector Gabriele D'Annunzio 1863 - 1938 whom Antonginigini followed to Paris from Italy in 1910. It features colour pochoirs by Barbier Bakst Brunelleschi Dammy and Martin and was meant as a record of contemporary Parisian culture and fashion. Perhaps less deliberately it also documents the transition from the end of the Belle Époque to a radically different period in world history. The journal ceased publication in August 1914 due to the outbreak of the First World War. 2 vols octavo. With 1 facsimile plate 93 etched pochoir plates without advertisements. Contemporary red straight-grain boards smooth spines lettered and decorated in gilt. Original wrappers bound in. Spines slightly sunned and worn still excellent copies. hardcover‎

Published by Jules Meynial between 1916 and 1921 "La Guirlande des Mois" was a delightful five-issue series of almanacs embellished with striking in-text drawings and pochoir plates by George Barbier. Filled with calendars poems articles and fiction by noted cultural figures of the period they evoke a privileged world of elegant splendor. Illustrated with five in-text drawings and six splendid pochoir plates by George Barbier this fifth and last issue of "La Guirlande des Mois" contains a poem by René Boylesve Vers l'Absente and four short stories La Sphère Enchanté; La Guêpe; Madame Fleur; L'"Imbroïlle" de l'Opéra by respectively Albert Flament Gérard d'Houville René Bizet and George Barbier. This volume is complete with its 12-page 1921 calendar at rear as well as its eight Note pages left blank. Age-toning to slipcase. Dust-jacket sunned along spine with minor offsetting to covers. The narrative then unfolds her past life and lovers. This edition is beautifully illustrated by Georges Barbier 1882-1932 celebrated designer of stage costumes and one of the most renowned French Art Deco illustrators and was one of the last illustrative projects executed before his death. Theophile Gautier 1811-1872 was a prolific and influential author whose work became a touchstone for later literary movements including Parnassianism Symbolism Decadence and Modernism and was much admired by the likes of Charles Baudelaire T. S. Eliot and Marcel Proust. First serialised in Le Moniteur universel in 1857 and published in book form the following year by Hachette Le Roman de la momie remains one of the most successful literary products of nineteenth-century Egyptomania.Loosely inserted is a printed notice from the publishers apologising for the colophon's erroneous statement that this is the forty-seventh volume in their Beaux Livres series it was the forty-eighth along with a printed bifolium in which the error has been corrected. 'Four of the five titles which Barbier undertook between 1924 and 1931 for Mornay's series Les Beaux Livres are tales by Henri de Regnier also with 18th century settings . More attractive is Gautier's Le roman de la momie of 1929 thanks in large part to the harmonious engravings printed in color by which Gasperini rendered the artist's designs. First edition first printing of this rare lady's almanac issued for the first American department store: Wanamaker's and illustrated by George Barbier 1882-1932 a painter and artist who produced many illustrations for fashion and theatre costumes and set. Uncommon the only copy listed institutionally is located by World Cat at the Morgan Library in New York. It features a calendar several blank pages for personal notes and a collection of poems including some by Ronsard La Fontaine and Voltaire. Sextodecimo. 4 plates coloured in pochoir and by hand in greys and white after Barbier and 3 lithographic plates. Original gilt paper-covered boards colour-printed art-déco pictorial silk onlays to boards and spine pink endpapers gilt edges. Housed in the publisher-issued slipcase with matching silk onlays. A hint of wear to extremities joints partially split at foot of spine the silk onlays otherwise bright and clean internally fresh and unmarked. A remarkably well-preserved copy in the original slipcase bottom panel expertly reattached slight wear to extremities a little rubbed else very good. hardcover‎

Size 24.5 x 19.0 cm. = A unique original aquarelle by the French artist Georges Augustin Barbier 1882-1932. Barbier was one of the foremost French Art Deco artists. "By epitomizing the more refined fantasies of the Parisian world of pleasure . he became the most haunting of Art Deco book artists" Ray. Barbier illustrated luxurious editions of several books including Les Liaisons Dangereuses Les Plus Belles Heures d'Amour de Casanova and l'Escapade. He also designed theatre costumes but he is perhaps best-known for his haute couture illustrations for such magazines as Journal des Dames et des Modes and Gazette de Bon Ton. The present drawing may well be made for publication in the Bon Ton as it features many illustrations by Barbier in the same style i.e. without a background in order to put emphasis on the model and her clothes. Signed: George as often Barbier 1924. A small blind-stamp of paper makers J. Whatman in the lower left corner and lower left edges a bit irregular for being uncut; some very weak toning but generally in excellent condition. But it was not his virtuosity alone that made him such a powerful stage presence. As contemporary reports make clear Nijinsky was a great and unusual actor. The ideal Fokine interpreter he was able to expand a simple choreographic design into a rich dramatic portrait using in keeping with Fokine's dicta the whole body as an expressive instrument. Nijinsky's influence as a dancer was immediate and huge. That ballet nearly extinguished artistically in western Europe was revived in this century is due to him and other great dancers of his generation such as Anna Pavlova and Karsavina as well as to Diaghilev. That male ballet utterly extinguished was also revived is due to him preeminently. Nijinsky was the first real ballet star of the male sex that Europe had seen since the retirement of Auguste Vestris nearly a century earlier. He initiated a renaissance.' One of the most important works by Barbier rivalled only by his Le bonheur du jour. Albert Flament's text of 1914 is a diffuse meditation half-waking and half-dreaming which takes as its point of departure the great roles of world theatre. Barbier's vignettes have a general relevance to the theme of acting but most of his plates at least one of which dates from 1916 are simply magnificent decorative compositions.
