‎BARBIER, George (illus)‎

‎Journal des dames et des modes.‎

‎Paris: aux bureaux du Journal des dames 1912-13. First editions number 807 of 1250 copies. This journal which borrowed both the title and format of La Mésangère's periodical of a hundred years before was founded by Tom Antonginigini the secretary friend and biographer of the poet and collector Gabriele D'Annunzio 1863 - 1938 whom Antonginigini followed to Paris from Italy in 1910. It features colour pochoirs by Barbier Bakst Brunelleschi Dammy and Martin and was meant as a record of contemporary Parisian culture and fashion. Perhaps less deliberately it also documents the transition from the end of the Belle Époque to a radically different period in world history. The journal ceased publication in August 1914 due to the outbreak of the First World War. 2 vols octavo. With 1 facsimile plate 93 etched pochoir plates without advertisements. Contemporary red straight-grain boards smooth spines lettered and decorated in gilt. Original wrappers bound in. Spines slightly sunned and worn still excellent copies. hardcover‎

‎Journal des Dames et des Modes‎

‎1912. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION OF ALL 79 ISSUES WITH 186 HAND-COLORED PLATES by some of the most famous artists of the era. Number 884 each issue from the same set of only 1250 sets on Holland paper out of a total edition of 1279. IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS IN FINE CONDITION. "The Journal des Dames et des Modes lasted only two years the first issue appeared on 1 June 1912 and the last on 1 August 1914. This stylish periodical was issued regularly three times a month and ceased publication upon the outbreak of the First World War. With its expensive layout its society columns its poetic texts its colourful annotations and its fashion reports it represented the last brilliant refined impartial and aestheticizing impulse of a happy and optimistic society occupying the centre of the stage in the period that has aptly been called the 'belle époque'. It was essentially the testimony the history--illustrated or rather 'clothed' and narrated--of the customs ideas and ideals of a society and a period.

"Every issue carefully reviewed all the current novelties of fashion and every issue carried coloured stencil prints reproducing the latest conceptions of the fashion designers." For the text "the magazine could count on the collaboration of the best known writers and littérateurs of the time" including Henri Duvernois Marcel Boulenger Paul Margueritte Jean Cocteau and many others. The artistic contributions "included the works of some outstanding artists and many promising young ones. Most frequent in his appearance and outstanding for the quality of his illustrations was Georges Barbier." Other artists included Léon Bakst Bernard Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi H. Robert Dammy Paul Iribe Charles Martin and Fernand Siméon. Christina Nuzzi Parisian Fashion from the "Journal des Dames et des Modes". Note: all 186 plates are present numbered 1-184 with two unnumbered plates.

Paris: 1912-1914. Octavo each issue loose as issued in original wrappers inserted loosely into four half-yearly plus one supplemental original large wrappers. ‎Le Roman de la momie. Compositions de George Barbier gravees sur bois par Gasperini.‎

‎1929. Paris: A & G Mornay. 1929. 8vo. Original pictorial paper wrappers with fold-over flaps with glassine dust jacket; pp. 6 323 1 untrimmed with colour illustrations by Barbier wood-engraved by Emile Gasperini including frontispiece title page chapter headings tail pieces and illustrations in the text; light shelf wear to spine ends corners a little bumped spine and top edge of rear wrapper gently toned else a near-fine bright copy; printed publisher's note loosely inserted.8vo. Original pictorial wrappers by Gasperini after Barbier with fold-over flaps with glassine dust-jacket partially untrimmed; pp. vi 325 2 colophon blank; over 30 wood-engraved illustrations by Gasperini after Barbier including frontispiece title-page head- and tailpieces initials and in-text illustrations; spine lightly bumped at head and foot slight wear to corners spine and head of rear wrapper lightly toned; else a near-fine bright copy; printed bifolium quire 21 and printed publisher's note on green paper loosely inserted see below.Uncommon first edition of Gautier's novel - set partly in the nineteenth century and partly in ancient Egypt - to be illustrated by Georges Barbier no. 289 of 834 copies printed on Rives paper from a total edition of 1091.Le Roman de la momie follows a young English aristocrat and a German Egyptologist on an expedition to the Valley of the Kings where they uncover a sarcophagus containing the perfectly preserved mummy of Tahoser the beautiful daughter of a high priest. The narrative then unfolds her past life and lovers. This edition is beautifully illustrated by Georges Barbier 1882-1932 celebrated designer of stage costumes and one of the most renowned French Art Deco illustrators and was one of the last illustrative projects executed before his death. Theophile Gautier 1811-1872 was a prolific and influential author whose work became a touchstone for later literary movements including Parnassianism Symbolism Decadence and Modernism and was much admired by the likes of Charles Baudelaire T. S. Eliot and Marcel Proust. First serialised in Le Moniteur universel in 1857 and published in book form the following year by Hachette Le Roman de la momie remains one of the most successful literary products of nineteenth-century Egyptomania.Loosely inserted is a printed notice from the publishers apologising for the colophon's erroneous statement that this is the forty-seventh volume in their Beaux Livres series it was the forty-eighth along with a printed bifolium in which the error has been corrected. 'Four of the five titles which Barbier undertook between 1924 and 1931 for Mornay's series Les Beaux Livres are tales by Henri de Regnier also with 18th century settings . More attractive is Gautier's Le roman de la momie of 1929 thanks in large part to the harmonious engravings printed in color by which Gasperini rendered the artist's designs.

‎
First edition copy number 7 of 100 of this sumptuously illustrated version of the story of the Queen of Sheba combining illustrations by Barbier and the Abyssinian artist Michel Engueda-Work. French scholar traveller and diplomat Hughes Le Roux had transcribed parts of the Ethiopian chronicle Kebra Nagast in 1904 with the help of local scholars from a manuscript looted by the British at Maqdala and subsequently returned. The Kebra Nagast or 'The Glory of the Kings' is a fourteenth-century national epic of Ethiopia written in Geʽez by the nebure id Ishaq of Aksum. In its existing form the text is at least 700 years old and purports to trace the origins of the Solomonic dynasty a line of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian monarchs who ruled the country until 1974 to the biblical king Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.

The story of the text's survival is interesting. The Battle of Maqdala the last struggle in the British Expedition to Abyssinia led to significant looting by the victorious British forces who took Emperor Tewodros II's crown along with ceremonial crosses chalices weapons and the holy icon Kwer'ata Re'esu along with two fine manuscripts of the Kebra Nagast which found their way to the British Museum catalogued as Oriental MS 818 and 819 respectively. 819 was returned to Ethiopia in 1872 on the request of the Abyssinian king who identified it as a fundamental source of law. Hugues Le Roux a French envoy from the President of the French Republic to Menyelek II King of Ethiopia later went to Addis Alem in order to see this manuscript and to obtain his permission to translate it into French. He notes in his introduction here the inscription 'This volume was returned to the King of Ethiopia by order of the Trustees of the British Museum Dec. 14th 1872'. Of the artist Michel Engueda-Work who is referred to elsewhere as an 'Abyssinian artist' almost nothing else is known but his illustrations are of course far truer to the Ethiopian style than Barbier's highly exoticised and eroticised interpretations in which Sheba is portrayed following long tradition as a white woman.

Folio 328 × 250 mm 4 xiii 1 84 1 pages six plates one a frontispiece and one vignette illustration by Barbier all hand/pochoir coloured illustrations some colour six sepia plates uncoloured by Michel Engueda-Work numerous vignettes and ornaments by Louis Popineau decorative borders. All plates and illustrations with lighter paper guards with printed captions. Original pale blue wrappers preserved in early red morocco by Joly fils with onlaid interlace cornerpieces gilt borders and spine panels silk and marbled endpapers top edge gilt other uncut. Marbled slipcase. Upper joint very slightly tender at head spine just a little faded. A super copy.
Goupil & C[ompagn]ie, Manzi, Joyant & C[ompagn]ie.‎

‎Model wearing haute couture. Original drawing.‎

‎Paris not published 1924. Original black ink and watercolour drawing heightened with gold. On fine J. Whatman wove paper. Size 24.5 x 19.0 cm. = A unique original aquarelle by the French artist Georges Augustin Barbier 1882-1932. Barbier was one of the foremost French Art Deco artists. "By epitomizing the more refined fantasies of the Parisian world of pleasure . he became the most haunting of Art Deco book artists" Ray. Barbier illustrated luxurious editions of several books including Les Liaisons Dangereuses Les Plus Belles Heures d'Amour de Casanova and l'Escapade. He also designed theatre costumes but he is perhaps best-known for his haute couture illustrations for such magazines as Journal des Dames et des Modes and Gazette de Bon Ton. The present drawing may well be made for publication in the Bon Ton as it features many illustrations by Barbier in the same style i.e. without a background in order to put emphasis on the model and her clothes. Signed: George as often Barbier 1924. A small blind-stamp of paper makers J. Whatman in the lower left corner and lower left edges a bit irregular for being uncut; some very weak toning but generally in excellent condition. An archetypal Barbier: finely coloured and rich in detail. Ray G. N. The Art Deco Book in France p. 35. hardcover‎

Woodcut illustrations by Barbier printed by F. I Schmied in collaboration with Pierre Bouchet and Louis Bracons. Half-title with half-page coloured woodcut title printed in green and black with a coloured woodcut Harlequin vignette 12 full-page and 2 half-page woodcut colour plates some with gold printing 22 historiated coloured woodcut four-line initials decorative woodcut ornaments in the text of which many printed in gold a final colour woodcut vignette. Light wear to extremities of spine generally an excellent copy of this important collaboration between Barbier and Schmied from the edition limited to 150 copies signed by Barbier in pencil. One of the most important works by Barbier rivalled only by his Le bonheur du jour. Albert Flament's text of 1914 is a diffuse meditation half-waking and half-dreaming which takes as its point of departure the great roles of world theatre. Barbier's vignettes have a general relevance to the theme of acting but most of his plates at least one of which dates from 1916 are simply magnificent decorative compositions.
