Journal des Dames et des Modes
1912. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION OF ALL 79 ISSUES WITH 186 HAND-COLORED PLATES by some of the most famous artists of the era. Number 884 each issue from the same set of only 1250 sets on Holland paper out of a total edition of 1279. IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS IN FINE CONDITION. "The Journal des Dames et des Modes lasted only two years the first issue appeared on 1 June 1912 and the last on 1 August 1914. This stylish periodical was issued regularly three times a month and ceased publication upon the outbreak of the First World War. With its expensive layout its society columns its poetic texts its colourful annotations and its fashion reports it represented the last brilliant refined impartial and aestheticizing impulse of a happy and optimistic society occupying the centre of the stage in the period that has aptly been called the 'belle époque'. It was essentially the testimony the history--illustrated or rather 'clothed' and narrated--of the customs ideas and ideals of a society and a period.

"Every issue carefully reviewed all the current novelties of fashion and every issue carried coloured stencil prints reproducing the latest conceptions of the fashion designers." For the text "the magazine could count on the collaboration of the best known writers and littérateurs of the time" including Henri Duvernois Marcel Boulenger Paul Margueritte Jean Cocteau and many others. The artistic contributions "included the works of some outstanding artists and many promising young ones. Most frequent in his appearance and outstanding for the quality of his illustrations was Georges Barbier." Other artists included Léon Bakst Bernard Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi H. Robert Dammy Paul Iribe Charles Martin and Fernand Siméon. Christina Nuzzi Parisian Fashion from the "Journal des Dames et des Modes". Note: all 186 plates are present numbered 1-184 with two unnumbered plates.

Paris: 1912-1914. Octavo each issue loose as issued in original wrappers inserted loosely into four half-yearly plus one supplemental original large wrappers. A few plates with spots but generally exceptionally clean dampstaining to edges of five issue wrappers. A nearly immaculate set exceedingly scarce in original wrappers. unknown books

Civil War Folk Art Barber Alexander
A Civil War Soldier's Carved Wooden Folk Art Memorial to his Service in the Union Army c. 1863
N.p. 1863. Dark carved wood 11 ½ x 11 ½ x 1 inches with bone border and star inlays in corners an inlaid tree with carved names of Civil War battles as leaves. During the Civil War wounded or captured soldiers would often pass their time waiting to return to duty carving relics. The practice was fairly common with pipes being the most commonly carved object and the quality of the relics varied wildly depending on the talent of the soldier. A.H. Barber from Wisconsin was wounded at Antietam and most likely carved this memorial piece while recovering from his wounds. Each leaf notes a different battle during the 1861-1862 campaigns. Barber enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Wisconsin in 1861 and was discharged in 1863 following wounds suffered at Antietam. The trunk reads Battles for the Union and the four branches read Dept. of the South Army of Virginia & of the Potomac and Dept. of the West with twenty-nine leaves naming battles.

The resultant plaque is exceptional in timeliness craftsmanship and overall aesthetic beauty. Barber's metaphorically growing tree is particularly timely for the Union cause as the 1863 failure of the Maryland Campaign would serve as inspiration to Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Wonderfully preserved in excellent condition with no notable flaws. From the collection of Norm Flaydernman the noted Americana dealer who personally collected carved Civil War pipes and had been planning to write a book on the subject at the time of his death. unknown books

These have no cardstock wrapper though the outermost leaf credits one Alan Blackman for "cover" presumably for cover artwork. A peculiar format possibly a cheap pre-publication trial balloon; this outermost leaf does double-duty as Table of Contents and gives mailing address volume number and price as well as Blackman's credit-line. FYI all later issues are printed on alkaline stock and have decorated cardstock cover-wrappers. Bound in green publisher's cloth gilt decoration of the author on front board blind tooled decorated cloth; binding showing some wear and discoloration. Owners signature of Rufus Munyan Co. D. 18. C.V. Company D 18th Connecticut Volunteers. First edition. Comical narrative by a delusionary "adviser" to Lincoln whose letters pointedly featured the absurdities of war and the madness of the public administration during the 1860's. Barber's view is reflective of many New York writers whose view of Lincoln and the war was decidedly Democratic challenging the ferocity of the Radical Republicans who controlled Washington. Written by the satirist Joseph Barber who also published Crumbs from the Round Table 1866 and The American Book of Ready Made Speeches 1866. The anonymous illustration which introduces the text captures the manic nature of the author with a statue of Lincoln looming over his shoulder Wright Fiction II 210.
