Joliet IL 1893. One and one-half pages in ink on recto and verso of quarto sheet of pictorial letterhead of THE LITERARY NORTHWEST with return address and printed portion crossed through. Tiny filing spindle hole; partial splitting at center mailing fold with no loss scrawled pencil docket and light soiling; about very good. Carpenter writes "To Mr. Herbert S. Stone" of the Chicago publishing firm of Stone & Kimball reporting that "All the drawings for the set of books you are getting out for Mr. Garland have been turned in & have proofs of all with the exception of the last two or three . They seem to have Mr. Garland's approval . I have tried to do good work on them and I think they will come out very strong and black. I have made many more than I had expected to but I am of course anxious to make a good showing from purely a selfish reason." Carpenter continues: "I should be very glad indeed to have you give me a chance when opportunity presents itself to do some artistic and decorative work quaint initials and the like or illustrating of any kind. While I have been very glad to have the opportunity of doing some realistic illustrating I think I would make a creditable showing in other directions. I mentioned to Mr. Garland the other day the payment of the $100 . I should very much appreciate the remittance if convenient as this season's experience has not left me in good financial shape." Horace Thompson Carpenter 1857-1947 was an American illustrator artist and art writer and served as Manager of THE LITERARY NORTHWEST AN ILLUSTRATED MONTHLY MAGAZINE which was published briefly in St. Paul by the D.D. Merrill Company from March 1892 until July 1893 -- no doubt its demise was among the causes of Carpenter's financial concerns. He studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. "Hamlin Garland's books were the rock on which the firm of Stone & Kimball was securely founded . . . The firm published Garland's PRAIRIE SONGS the essays CRUMBLING IDOLS and the novel ROSE OF DUTCHER'S COOLLY. Another volume of stories PRAIRIE FOLKS was published by Stone & Kimball in 1895 from the types of an earlier edition. The author was extravagantly pleased with the appearance of these books; especially with the designs of H.T. Carpenter for MAIN TRAVELLED ROADS reprinted by Stone & Kimball and PRAIRIE SONGS and with the symbolic design of three cornstalks the publishers gave their bindings. ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT ACCOUNT BOOK FOR PHILADELPHIA CARPENTERS JOHN AND W.H. MARTIN RECORDING DAILY WORK SUPPLIES AND EARNINGS 1835 - 1866
Philadelphia 1866. 15316pp. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards. Binding worn and rubbed. Very good. An interesting carpenter's account book from 19th century Philadelphia containing a voluminous amount of entries listing client names types of carpentry work done and the costs thereof. Internal evidence his name on pages 52 114 suggests that this belonged to Philadelphia carpenters John and W.H. Martin. The accounts start on July 22 1835 exactly one month after the 1835 Philadelphia general strike ended. Workers' rights and formative unions owe much to this strike in Philadelphia the first general strike by wage workers in North America. The strike helped alleviate long hours and low pay by involving some 20000 workers who demanded a ten- hour work day and increased wages. The strike was very successful ending in an almost complete victory for the workers. About half of the ledger deals with work done in the first five years in which it was kept 1835-1840. There are no entries from June 1847 to June 1849 and only sporadic entries from 1857 to the final entries in 1866; most of the rest of the accounts are from 1840-1855 except the two year hiatus. The account book lists a wide assortment of different types of work accomplished by carpenters including framing putting up awnings "repairing a privey seat" hanging doors and windows putting up lightning rods making shutters mending floors and much more. In addition Martin seemed to also occasionally make furniture specifically benches and tables for which there are some entries here. It also contains important information on the prices paid by tradesmen for supplies in Philadelphia at the time mostly lumber and nails in this case. Although there is no explicit ownership signature both internal evidence and other material purchased from the same estate suggest John Martin as the principal craftsperson and W.H. Martin as an employee or other principal of the business. The ledger offers much insight into American trade in one of its most important cities at a time of immense growth. A facinating account book with much detail on the development of Philadelphia private homes in the middle of the 19th century. hardcover

Np 1950. 345314513791028 leaves plus numerous unnumbered inserted leaves. Quarto. Original typescript with frequent revisions and alterations throughout in pencil and occasionally in ink with a few inserts in carbon typescript. Punched and enclosed in leatherette binder. Generally very good to fine. An original working typescript for this evidently unproduced musical adaptation with text and lyrics by Rosen to be accompanied by music by Carleton Carpenter. The undertaking was quite ambitious and this draft stems from a point of ongoing substantive revision. Evidently plans proceeded to a further stage as tipped in front is a clipping from an unidentified trade paper indicating that Cyril Ritchard had been signed for the lead and negotiations were ongoing for a Broadway run produced by Kermit Bloomgarden. However IBDB records no such production though Rosen's and Carpenter's other Broadway accomplishments are represented. Rosen is there credited with staging the 1938-9 WPA Production of Shaw's ANDROCLES AND THE LION at the Lafayette Theatre in New York which ran 104 performances and featured an all African American cast. hardcover

Lausanne: M. Ducloux 1841. First edition. This is a classic work on the phenomenon of erratic blocks and the function of glaciers in transporting them. Charpentier's theory delivered in a paper in 1834 was met with disbelief and scorn. "Undismayed Charpentier continued his observations and invited the incredulous to visit him and see the evidence for themselves. Among his visitors was Louis Agassiz who was soon carried away with such enthusiasm for the theory of the Ice Age that he visited a number of glaciers and blocks and rushed into print ahead of Charpentier with his �tudes sur les Glaciers 1840.Charpentier received Agassiz' book on 28 October 1840 three days before he finished his own Essai sur les Glaciers which was published in February 1841. The scrupulous care with which he weighed the evidence and described the phenomenon of erratic blocks and the function of glaciers in transporting them makes this book a classic."-D.S.B. III p. 211. While Agassiz is generally credited with the origin of the theory of the Ice Age the theory had in fact been developed long before by Charpentier.
