‎First appearance of an importent paper in the history of biology, in which Schwann describes his discovery and isolation of pepsin, the substance in the stomach that aids digestion of eggwhite. It is the FIRST KNOWN ANIMAL ENZYME. The paper appeared at the same time in ""Archiv für Anatomie, Physiologie und Wissenschaftliches Medicin""Theodor Schwann (1810-1882) was a great German physiologist, pathologist, and experimenter. One of the founders of the cell doctrine and of the idea of the living nature of yeast. Born at Neuss, near Düsseldorff. A catholic, educated in the Jesuit Gymnasium in Cologne. Intended for the church but took to medicine. He was a pupil of Johannes Müller and a collegueand lifelong friend of J. Henle, the anatomist. ‎First French edition (the German paper issued simutaneously in Gilbert's Annalen) of this groundbreaking paper claiming to be the first to announce the isolation of pure morphine from opium. This process marks an importent step in the beginnings of alkaloid chemistry, and the isolation of morphine is the first isolation of an alkali of vegetable origin. In his paper Sertuerner coined the word ""morphine"" after Morpheus (the Greek God of sleep).The isolation of morphine from opium, the first isolation of a natural product, was a seminal event in the development of pharmacology as an independent discipline. The purification kick-started natural product chemistry and quickly led to the isolation of a host of other alkaloids. Within a few years, in 1827, Heinrich Emanuel Merck of Darmstadt began selling morphine, resulting in the development of the eponymous company. Sertürner reported his first observations on Opium in 1805, which was mainly concerned with the constituent of meconic acid, but ""it was only in 1817...(in the paper offered) that he unequivocally reported the isolation of pure morphine. He prepared it by extracting opium with hot water and precipitating morphine with ammonia. he obtained colorless crystals, poorly soluble in water, but soluble in acids and alcohol. In order to establish that his crystals carried the pharmacological activity of raw opium, Sertuerner tested them on himself and three boys, ""none older than seventeen."". It was a near-catastrophe."" (Ryan J. Huxtable a. K.W. Schwarz).DEROSNE (1803) made claim of priority in the discovery of opium, but he only ""prepared a crude extract of opium with alcohol and water, and obtained by potassium carbonate preciipitation, what he called ""sel de Derosne"". Derosne's alkaloidal fraction lacked narcotic properties, and was probably largely narcotine (also known as noscapine), perhaps with meconic acid, both abundant in opium."" ‎First printing of the paper in which Zsigmondy describes his invention of the Ultramicroscope, by which is became possible to see the Brownian movements of molecules. His microscope is still of great importence in colloid studies, but in most fields where great magnification is required, it has been outdistanced by the electron microscope.""Zsigmondy was a figure of paramount importance on colloid chemistry during the first quarter of the twentieth century. His receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1925, for invention of the ultramicroscope and his work on colloids was the first time this fledgling science had been so honored. In 1926 work by J. B. ‎Collection of 15 large lithographed maps relating to the battles during the Peninsula war. The maps are lithographed from the original Drawing(s) in the Qr Mr Genls Office, at the Top.l Dept of the War Office (by) H. James.‎

‎(London, War Office, 1860-70). All of the large maps are lithographed (one signed ""lith. James Ferguson"") with positions in colour. The measures given are paper sizes, comprising: 1. Movements of the two Armies after the Repulse of Marshal Massena's Attack upon the Position of Busaco. (68 x 82 cm.).- 2. Battle of Talevera de la Reyna fought on the 27th & 28th July 1809. (113 x 68 cm.). - 3. Battle of Busaco. General Position of the French and allied Armies on the 26th September 1810. (68 x 100 cm.). - 4-6. Battle of Fuentes D'Onoro, Fought on the 3rd and 5th May 1811. Map 1-3., each (68 x 100 cm.). - 7-15. all with the heading title Massena's Retreat No. 1-3 and 5-10 each around (51 x 67 cm.). At end one untitled map. Some foldings strenghtened with tape.‎

‎We have been unable to decide whether these maps are a part of a series or just published separately.The Peninsular War was a military conflict between Napoleon's empire and Bourbon Spain, for control of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars. The war began when the French and Spanish armies invaded and occupied Portugal in 1807, and escalated in 1808 when France turned on Spain, previously its ally. The war on the peninsula lasted until the Sixth Coalition defeated Napoleon in 1814, and is regarded as one of the first wars of national liberation, significant for the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare.‎

‎First German translation of ""Danish Law"" which became a prototype and inspiration for other European codexes. The English envoy to Denmark at the time, Robert Molesworth, praises the Danish Code in his otherwise highly negative text: ""An account of Denmark as it was in the year 1692"". He states that in justice, brevity and clarity, the Code surpasses all other legal texts he knows of. ‎First printing of these 5 papers accounting the observations of the comet. Bianchini and Maraldi discovered the comet in the morning sky on April 20, 1702. The comet was a short distance above the horizon and was said to resemble a ""nebulous star"".An independent discovery was made by Maria Margarethe Kirch (Berlin, Germany on April 21, 1702 and by Philippe de la Hire (Paris, France) on April 24. The last observation of the comet was made by Bianchini and Maraldi on May 5, 1702.‎

‎First appearance of these two historical papers in chemistry in which Thomson and Wollaston, independently, presents experimental proofs of John Dalton's ""Law of Multiple Proportions"", and thereby laying the foundations of the Atomic Theory. - These demonstrations went far to influence chemists favorably toward Dalton's atomic theory. ""In January 1808 Thomson was the first to submit an experimental illustration of the law of multiple proportions, doing so at least four months before the publication of Dalton's ""New System of Chemistry Philosophy"" (1808). This paper, ""On Oxalic Acid"" also established a usefull method of determining empirical formulas.""(DSB XIII, p. 373).""This paper is also importent as he here introduces quantified chemical symbolism for compounds, a compound with, for instance, two parts oxygen (w) and one part carbon (c) being denoted by 2w + c."" Lord kelvin used this integrator -devised for a planimeter in the 1860s by his brother, James Thomson - on two new kinds of analog computers: a harmonic analyzer and a tide predictor. he later specified a more general machine - a differential analyzer.""(Eames in ""A Computer Perspective"").""The harmonic analyzer was used in conjunction with Thomson's tide predictor...The present paper (""Harmonic Analyzer"") contains the first full description of the harmoniz analyzer, which was ""designed rudimentally"" (p. 371) in Thomson's ""On an integrating machine having a new kinematic principle""(also offered here),,,,James Thomson's integrator - ""one of the first really workable integrating devices"" (Williams 1985, 207) - served as the basis for other analog machines designed by William Thomson for solving simultaneous linear equations and integrating differential equations.
