‎"SIEDENTOPF, H. und R. (RICHARD) ZSIGMONDY. - THE INVENTION OF THE ULTRAMICROSCOPE.‎

‎Ueber Sichtbarmachung und Grössenbestimmung ultramikroskopischer Teilchen, mit besondrer Anwendung auf Goldrubingläser.‎

‎(Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1903). Without wrappers.. In ""Annalen der Physik. Vierte Folge. Bd. 10. No 1. (Entire issue offred). With halftitle to vol. 10. 224 pp. and 1 folded plate. Seidentopf & Zsigmondy's paper: pp. 1-39 a. textillustrations. The issue punched in inner margin after cords. 3 small stamps in the text.‎

‎First printing of the paper in which Zsigmondy describes his invention of the Ultramicroscope, by which is became possible to see the Brownian movements of molecules. His microscope is still of great importence in colloid studies, but in most fields where great magnification is required, it has been outdistanced by the electron microscope.""Zsigmondy was a figure of paramount importance on colloid chemistry during the first quarter of the twentieth century. His receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1925, for invention of the ultramicroscope and his work on colloids was the first time this fledgling science had been so honored. In 1926 work by J. B. Perrin and Theodor Svedberg that followed directly from Zsigmondy’s achievement was recognized by the Nobel Prizes in physics and in chemistry, respectively. No Nobel Prize since then has been awarded for work solely in colloid chemistry. (DSB).The offered issue contains another importent paper by MAX ABRAHAM ""Prinzipien der Dynamik des Elektrons. Pp. 105-179. In 1902 Abraham said ""It now becomes necessary to base the dynamics of the electrons from the outset on electromagnetic considerations"" In 1903 (the paper offered) he published his main detailed article on the rigid electron""(Pais in Subtle is the ord"" pp. 157 ff.""The ultramicroscope is form of microscope that reveals the presence of particles that cannot be seen with a normal optical microscope. Colloidal particles, smoke particles, etc., are suspended in a liquid or gas in a cell with a black background and illuminated by an intense cone of light that enters the cell from the side and has its apex in the field of view. The particles then produce diffraction-ring systems, appearing as bright specks on the dark background.‎

‎Extremely rare first printing of what is arguably the world's first facsimile, namely Mads Vingaard's 1576 reproduction of the first printing of the Law of Sealand, originally printed by Ghemen in 1505 and here re-issued in exact reproduction. This wonderful print is not merely a ""line to line, word to word""-reproduction, but a facsimile making use of the same types and exact reproductions of the woodcuts. It is generally believed that ""the first facsimile in the history of the book was a manuscript of Austrian provenance - the Goldene Bulle - reproduced in 1697 by the Frankfurt law historian Heinrich Günther Thülemeyer and Johann Friedrich Fleischer"" (from ""Imagination, Almanach"" 1986-1993, Sammelheft. 1993"" 2006). The present reproduction predates that work otherwise hailed as the first ""facsimile"" in the history of the book by more than a century! Some credit Plantin in the 17th century with being the first to produce a facsimile. This is also about a century after Mats Vingaard's facsimile of the Law of Sealand. Like the laws of Sealand and The Law of Scania, The Law of Jutland"" constitutes a law book (""Rechtsbuch"" in German) in the sense of a private collection of those common laws pertaining to inheritance, ownership, marriage, measurement of land, murder, theft, vandalism, etc. that were commonly applicable in the region. The medieval Danish regional laws possess an immense importance both linguistically and legally, and the influence is evident even today, both in the development of our legal system and of our written language. At the time of their foundation, the Danish kingdom was divided into jurisdictional areas, lands, that in turn were divided into townships. Each land had a county council, which also served as a judicial court. It quite quickly became standard for the township court to be able to refer verdicts and rulings to the county/land council. In the 13th century, there were three main lands, namely Jutland, Sealand and Skåne. With time, these three lands came to rule over all townships, and thus, we find three ruling legal books from the 13th century, namely the three earliest Danish law books - Jyske Lov, the Sealandic Laws, and Skånske Lov. They were all printed for the first time in 1505 and 1505 respectively. It is not until 1683 (with ""Danske Lov"") that Denmark gets a law that covers the entire kingdom. The 1576 facsimile is scarce and Thesaurus estimates that only ab. 10 copies still exist on private hands.‎

‎Scarce first German edition of this hugely influential textbook in optics.""Smith wrote on optics and harmonics. In 1738 he published A Compleat System of Optics in Four Books, viz. A Popular, at Mathematical, a Mechanical, and a Philosophical Treatise. Both comprehensive and reliable, the work became probably the most influential optical textbook of the eighteenth century. It was also published in Dutch in 1753, in German in 1755, and in two different French translations in 1767, In 1778 an abridged version was published in English. In turn, its popularity helped to establish the eighteenth-century conviction that light is particulate."" (DSB).‎

‎First German edition. ""His paper ""Teoria kinetyczna opalescencji gazów w stanie krytycznym"" (""kinetic Theory of Gas Opalescence at the Critical Stale"" 1907) - the paper offered in the German version - shows why the critical point plays such an important role and states that the opalescence of pure gas also should be observable under normal conditions: ""Each of us has observed it innumerable times when admiring the blue of the sky or the glow of the rising sun."" Smoluchowski combined the theory of fluctuations with the results of Lord Rayleigh’s researches on the blue of the sky" his finding (Einstein also took part in the discussion) was that the blueness of the sky was caused by fluctuations in the density of the air. Smoiuchowski’s laboratory production of sky blue closed the investigation to a certain extent.that pure air can opalesce in the laboratory under normal conditions.‎

(Sobrero)""Nitroglycerin was synthesized by the chemist Ascagne Sobrero in the middle of the nineteenth century. When he tasted it, as all good nineteenth century chemists did when they discovered a new compound, it gave him what he called a migraine, because of its vasodilatory effect, which was later harnessed in the treatment of angina by William Murrell (1879), following the experience of a distinguished British clinician, Lauder Brunton, using amyl nitrite (1867) Later in the nineteenth century, Alfred Nobel discovered how to stabilize nitroglycerin, using kieselguhr (diatomite) clay"" this led to highly successful industrial applications of dynamite and created the fortune that eventually funded the eponymous prizes. For medical purposes nitroglycerin was subsequently renamed glyceryl trinitrate, to hide the fact that it was literally dynamite as well as metaphorically.""‎

‎First appearance of these 5 important papers in which Stark describes his researches on the effects of the electrical field on the spectral lines of hydrogen, thus discovering the splitting of the spectral lines, THE STARK-EFFECT. This effect was incorporated into quantum mexhanics by Paul Epstein in 1916, and it was shown to be consistent with wave mechanics by Schrödinger in 1926. In 1919 Stark was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics for his discovery of the Doppler effect in canal rays and of the splitting of spectral lines inan electric field (the papers offered). ""At the beginning of July 1913, several months before Stark’s discovery, Niels Bohr published his concept of a quantum-mechanical model of the atom. This provided, in principle, the possibility of understanding the reason for the Stark effect, which the classical theory was powerless to explain. Stark therefore had an opportunity to be doubly gratified, having also been one of the first, after Max Planck and Einstein, to stress the “fundamental significance” of Planck’s elementary law (since 1907). which he had championed in many polemical discussions. Yet, almost incomprehensibly, Stark denied himself the satisfaction of seeing his own experiments confirm a theory for which he had helped prepare the way conceptually, even if he had not directly participated in its creation. Apparently he always had to oppose the accepted point of view. Thus, as Bohr’s theory continued to gain adherents in 1914-1916."" (DSB)‎

This publication led Marignac to doubt the universality of the law of definite proportions. In three papers collectively entitled ""Nouvelles recherches sur les lois des proportions chimiques, sur les poids atomiques et leurs rapports mutuels"" (1865), Stas presented the results of an extensive series of experiments devoted to the new demonstration. By painstaking and accurate measurements he established that atomic weights were incommensurable, thereby disproving the facile conclusion that discrepancies with whole-number values were due merely to experimental errors. Prout’s hypothesis was thus discredited.""(DSB).‎

To this phenomenon the name 'flourencence' was given by Stoken in 1852 (the paper offered), in a famous paper disclosing its true nature.""(Whittaker in ""A History of the Theores of Aether and Electricity"" Vol. I.p. 262).""However, long before the discovery of the electron made the compositeness of atoms explicit, the clearest signals that structure was called for came from spectra. Already in 1852, Stokes, in the importent memoir ""On the Change of Refrangibility of Ligh"" (to which Kelvin referred) had written. ""In all probability...the molecular vibrations by which...light is produced are not vibrations i which the molecules move among one another, but vibrations aming the constituent parts of the molecules themselves, performed by virtue of the internal forces which hold the parts of molecules together"". Please notice...at that time, the term 'molecule' often meant what we call 'atom'.""(Pais in""Inward Bound"", p. 175).‎

‎First appearance of Strohmeyer's account of his discovery of Cadmium. The history of its discovery was very complicated as some other laid claim to its discovery.Stromeyer was inspector general of apothecaries in Hannover. ""In 1817, fulfilling the duties of his office, he came across an apothecary's shop in which a bottle labeled zinc oxide contained zinc carbonate. Following this up, Stromeyer found himself interested in zinc carbonate, which turned yellow on strong heating as though it contained iron as an impurity, yet it contained no iron. He traced the yellow to an oxide not of zinc but of a hitherto unknown metal rather like it chemically. He named it cadmium for a zinc ore in which it is usually found accompanying the zinc.""(Asimov).Weeks ""Discovery of the Elements"", pp. 135-39.‎

A dampstain in upper part of inner margins throughout, otherwise clean and wide-margined. The plates with some browning.‎

‎Scarce first edition of Swedenborg's main scientific work. The volume also form part one of his ""Opera Philosophica et Mineralia"".""In his Principia rerum naturalium (Leipzig, 1734), probably conceived as a counterpart to Newton’s Principia, he sought a comprehensive physical explanation of the world based on mathematical and mechanical principles. While remaining faithful to the general principles of Cartesian natural philosophy, which he had learned while studying at Uppsala, Swedenborg elaborated upon them. According to his cosmogony the physical reality has developed from the mathematical point, which was an entity between infinite and finite. Through a vortical movement implanted on the point, a series of material particles developed (the ""first finiata, ""the second finita"",and so on) that eventually led to the cosmos in its present state. In contrast to Descartes, Swedenborg believed that the planets had developed from the chaotic solar mass through expansion of its surrounding shell, which finally joined to form a belt along the equatorial plane of the sun. It then exploded, forming the planets and the satellites. Although the basic construction of Swedenborg’s thought heralded the later planetary theories of Buffon, Kant, and Laplace, there is nothing to indicate that it exerted any direct influence on posterity."" (DSB).In 1738, Swedenborg's magnum opus was placed on the ""Index Librorum Prohibitorum"".‎

Sylvester took the functions of the coefficients that serve to decide the reality of the roots, and treated them as coordinates of a point in n-dimensional space. A point is or is not ""facultative"" according to whether there correspons, or fail to correspond, an equation with real coefficients. The character of the roots depends on the bounding surface or surfaces of the facultative regions, and on a single surface depending on the ""discriminant.""(DSB XIII, p. 219).‎

‎First German translation of ""Danish Law"" which became a prototype and inspiration for other European codexes. The English envoy to Denmark at the time, Robert Molesworth, praises the Danish Code in his otherwise highly negative text: ""An account of Denmark as it was in the year 1692"". He states that in justice, brevity and clarity, the Code surpasses all other legal texts he knows of. It is so clear and simple to understand, that any literate person can understand his case and is able to represent himself in Court if he so wishes. Thesaurus II: 431.‎
