‎Berlin, G. Eichler, 1836. In ""Archiv für Anatomie, Physiologie und Wissenschaftliches Medicin Herausgegeben von Johannes Müller"". Jahrgang 1836. Pp. 66-89 a. pp. 90-139. The entire volume offered in its 6 parts (in 5), all 5 issues uncut with orig. printed warppers. (2),CCXXIV,390 pp. and 15 engraved plates. The 2 first issues with a faint dampstain to lower part of leaves and plates.‎

‎First appearance of an importent paper in the history of biology, in which Schwann describes his discovery and isolation of pepsin, the substance in the stomach that aids digestion of eggwhite. It is the FIRST KNOWN ANIMAL ENZYME. The paper appeared at the same time in ""Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff"".Theodor Schwann (1810-1882) was a great German physiologist, pathologist, and experimenter. One of the founders of the cell doctrine and of the idea of the living nature of yeast. Born at Neuss, near Düsseldorff. A catholic, educated in the Jesuit Gymnasium in Cologne. Intended for the church but took to medicine. He was a pupil of Johannes Müller and a collegueand lifelong friend of J. Henle, the anatomist. In Berlin Schwann was Johannes Müller's assistent for five years, and it was then that he discovered pepsin in 1836 (the paper offered).Parkinson ""Breakthroughs"" 1836 B. - Garrison & Morton no. 991.The first paper offered, written together with Johannes Müller records the preliminary investigaions leading to the discovery of Pepsin. - Garrison & Morton no. 990.The volume also contains another famous paper by ROBERT REMAK ""Vorläufige Mittheilung microscopischer Beobachtungen über den innern Bau der Cerebrospinalnerven und über die Entwicklung ihrer Formenelemente. The repelling force resulted from the caloric that a body possessed. When equilibrium is disturbed in a solid, a restoring force acts which is proportional to the change in distance between the particles.""(DSB, X, p. 4).""The equations are useful because they describe the physics of many things of academic and economic interest. ‎Beschreibung des neuen electrichen oder galvanischen Apparats Alexander Volta's, und einiger wichtigen damit angestellten Versuche.‎

‎Halle, Rengerschen Buchhandlung, 1800. Without wrappers as published in ""Annalen der Physik. Herausgegeben von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert"", Bd. 6, Drittes Stück. The entire issue offered (=Heft 3). Titlepage to vol. 6. Pp. 249-376. Nicholson's paper: pp. 340-359. Light browning. A faint dampstain to upper right corners on some leaves.‎

‎First German edition of Nicholson's famous paper in which he, together with his friend Anthony Carlisle, succeeded in breaking up molecules into the constituent atoms of hydrogen and oxygen. They thus established the usefulness of the converse of the voltaic cell, by using electricity to produce chemical actions.""On March 20 of that year (1820) Volta wrote to Banks, president ofthe Royal Society, informing him of his construction of an electric battery. Nicholson heard of this and with the aid of a friend built his own Voltaic pile by May 2. It was the first in England. Nicholson's great contribution was to place wires attached to the two ends of the pile in water. He found that with the current flowing, bubbles of gaz (hydrogen and oxygen) ere given off. He had ""electolyzed"" water, breaking up the molecules into the individual elements. He thus reversed the demonstration of Cavendish, that hydrogen and oxygen could unite to form water. This was the first demonstration that an electric current could bring about a chemical reaction - the reverse of olta's demonstration that a chemical action could bring about an electrical current.""(Asimov). Upon decomposing this salt by heat, as Marignac had done, he obtained some very pure ytterbia and, to his great surprise, an earth that was unknown to him.Upon thoroughly investigating this new earth, he found that it contained an element whose properties concided almost exactly with those Mendeléef had predicted for ekaboron. ‎"NOLLET, (JEAN ANTOINE). - THE THEORY OF THE ""DOUBLE FLUX"" IN ELECTRICITY.‎

‎Recherches sur les Causes Particulieres des Phénoménes Électriques, Et sur les effets nuisibles ou avantageux qu'on peut attendre. Troisieme Edition.‎

‎Paris, Freres Guerin, 1753. Small 8vo. Cont. full mottled calf. Top of spine with wear. Raised bands, richly gilt spine. Some wear to titlelabels. Small tear to hinges at upper compartment (hinges not loosening).. Spine a little rubbed. Small loss of leather at at lower right corner of frontcover. XXIII,444 pp. and 8 large folded engraved plates (showing apparatus and experiments with electricity). Internally clean, printed on good paper. From the library of le Comte de Caumia Baillenx, ""en son Chateau d'Andrain"" and with his mongram, blindtooled on both covers.‎

‎In this work Nollet, the discoverer of the theory of double flux, describes, among other experiments, the famous experiments with the Leyden jar. ""The author lay down a theory, according to which the cause of electrical phenomena is the effluence and affluence of a subtile fluid which is everywhere present. Some interesting experiments are described with vacuum tubes also on the influence of electric charges on the growth of plants."" (Wheeler, 355, but not listing this edition). - Poggendorff II:296.""Nollet's system (effluence and affluence) was much superior to earlier theories of double flux. such as Moliere's or Hauksbee's. A cheif difficulty with them (as with the theory of pulsating atmospheres) had been to explain why attraction occurs first.follwed by contact and then repulsion. Nollet answered that the effluent and affluent flows differ not only in direction, but in velocity and spatial distribution as well. The effluent stream consists of many jets, each of which spreads out into a cone with apex at one of the scattered exit pores. The affluent current, being a hodgepodge of differently directed effluent streams, is approximately isotropic.""(Heilbron, p. 284)‎

‎"OLBERS, WILLIAM. - COMPUTING THE ORBIT OF COMETS.‎

‎An Essay on the easiest and most convenient Method of calculating the Orbit of a Comet from Observations. Weimar, 1797. Translated from the German. With Notes. (5 Parts).‎

‎(London, John Murray, 1820, 1821, 1822). Wirhout wrappers as ectracted from ""The Quarterly Journal of Science and the Arts. (The Royal Institution of Great Britain)"", vol. IX, X, XI, XII, XIII. Pp. 149-164, 416-426, 177-182, 137-151 a. 366-385, textillustr.‎

‎First English translation of Olber's famous work on the orbits of comets.""In 1796 Olbers discovered a Comet and calculated its parabolic orbit with a new method, simpler than that used by Laplace. In a letter to F.X. von Zach...Olbers asked whether his treatise on this method shouild be printed, and if so, how this could be done. After reading the tratise and using it with excellent results to compute the orbit of the comet of 1779, which had presented great difficulties to many astronomers, von Zach decided to see it through the press himself. It appeared in Weimar in 1797 under the title ""Über die leichteste und bequemste Methode, die Bahn eines Kometen aus einigen Beobachtungen zu berechnen"" This work immediately established Olbers among the formost astronomers of his time, and his method was used tyhroughout the nineteenth century.""(DSB X, p. 198).‎

In that first paper, dealing with the role of atmospheric oxygen in vinification, he sought to establish that the aging of wine resulted from the slow penetration of atmospheric oxygen through the porous wook casks into which new wine was decanted. By virtue of this slow oxidation, he claimed, new wine grows less harsh and acid to the taste as it becomes clearer and lighter from the to the taste as it becomes clearer and lighter from the precipation of dark coloring matters. In his second paper (January 1864) Pasteur examined the ""alterations"" or ""diseases of wine, especially wine from the Jura, his native department. Reviewing the familiar disease of ""turned,"" ""acid"" ""ropy"" or ""oily "" wine, he associated each with a microscopic organism. He summarized the results of his first two papers by nothing that ""wine, which is proudced by a cellular vegetation acting as a ferment [namely, yeast], is altered only by the influence of other vegetations of the same order"" and once removed from the effects of their parasitism, it is made or matured principally by the action of atmospheric oxygen penetrating slowly through the staves of the casks.""(DSB).‎

‎First edition of the first announcement of Pauli's Exclusion Principle which gives a criterion for the electronic structure of atoms, and explains the periodic table and the combining properties of the elements.Pauli first formulated his exclusion principle in this article in an attempt to explain the structure of the periodic table. By introducing an additional quantum number, namely the spin of an electron, to the already known three quantum numbers in Bohr's atom model, and by postulating that no two electrons can have the same four quantum numbers, Pauli could explain the number of electrons allowed in the outermost shell, e.g., explaining the varying lengths of successive periods in the table. The exclusion principle turned out to be applicable to all fermions, and thus plays a role in a variety of physical phenomena. For example it explains the formation of degenerate matter in white dwarfs and neutron stars. In 1945 Pauli received the Nobel Prize in physics ""for the discovery of the Exclusion Principle, also called the Pauli Principle"".This volume also contains a paper by Heisenberg: 'Über eine Anwendung des Korrespondenzprinzips auf die Frage der Polarisation des Floureszenzlichtes' , A. Einstein: ""Bemerkung zu P. Jordans Abhandlung ""Zur Theorie der Quantenstrahlung""and another paper by Pauli: 'Über den Einfluss der Geschwindigkeitsabhängigkeit der Elektronenmasse auf den Zeemaneffekt' (Zeeman-Effect and the Dependence of Electron-Mass on the Velocity).‎

A stamp to foot of a few leaves In: 'Zeitschrift für Physik', Volume 31. VIII,952 pp., textillustr. (Entire volume offered). Pauli's paper: pp.765-783. Internally clean and fine.‎

‎"PEANO, G. (GUISEPPE). - THE ""FORMULARIO-PROJECT""‎

‎Formulaire de Mathématiques.‎

‎Paris, Georges Carré et C. Naud, 1901. Royal8vo. Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt and with gilt lettering. Small stamp at foot of titlepage and last leaf. VIII,230,(2) pp. With the ownership-signature of the noted Danish logician Jørgen Jørgensen to front free endpaper. Clean and fine.‎

‎First edition of Peano's third version - the third volume - of his Formulario-project aiming at presenting all mathematical axioms and results in a clear form always using his five axioms and thereby rewrites all known mathematics in a symbolic form and thus provide a key to a satisfactory solution to the questions of the foundations of mathematics. The logical notations used by Peano were used and developed by Whitehead and Russell in their ""Principia Mathematica"" of 1910.""In 1892 he announced in the Rivista the Formulario project, which was to take much of his mathematical and editorial energies for the next sixteen years. He hoped that the result of this project would be the publication of a collection of all known theorems in the various branches of mathematics. The notations of his mathematical logic were to be used, and proofs of the theorems were to be given. There were five editions of the Formulario (the offered item being the third). The first appeared in 1895"" the last was completed in 1908, and contained some 4,200 theorems (the item offered). But Peano was less interested in logic as a science per se than in logic as used in mathematics. (For this reason he called his system ""mathematical logic."") Thus the last two editions of the Formulario introduce sections on logic only as it is needed in the proofs of mathematical theorems."" (DSB).The famous Italian mathematician, logical philosopher, pioneer of symbolic logic, and a founder of mathematical logic and set theory, Giuseppe Peano (1858 -1932) studied mathematics at the University of Turin, where he was employed just after graduating (1880), and where he stayed almost all of his life, devoting this to mathematics. After having graduated with honours, he was employed to assist first Enrico D'Ovidio, and then the renowned Angelo Genocchi, who possessed the chair of Infinitesimal calculus. In 1890 Peano became extraordinary professor, and in 1895 ordinary professor, of infinitesimal calculus at the Unversity of Turin.‎

‎Mémoire sur L'Hydraulique.‎

‎(Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1750). 4to. Extract from ""Mémoires de Mathematique et de Physique, Présentés à l'Academie des Sciences par divers Savans"", Tome I. Pp. 261-282 and 2 engraved plates. A small tear to lower margin of first leaf, no loss.‎

‎First printing of an importent memoir in hydraulics in which Petit-Vandin demonstrated that - contrary to the long held belief that float-boards on water-mills ought to be so proportioned, that when one of them was in vertical position, or at the middle of its immersion, the next one should be just entering the water - the more float-boards such a wheel has, the greater and more uniform will be the effects.‎

(Entire issues offered). Pelletier & Caventou's papers: pp. 323-324 (tome 8) and pp. 142-176 (tome 10). A few scattered brownspots.‎

‎First printing of these classic papers in chemistry in which the authors announced their discovery of Strychnine. This was the first alkali of vegetable origin to be discovered after morphine. This discovery (and their discovery of chlorophyll) brought them international fame. The first small paper contains the announcement of the discovery and the second long memoir contains the elaborate exposition of the discovery.""Strychnine was only the second alkaloid to be extracted, the first was morphine. Pelletier and Caventou wanted to name their new alkaloid vauqueline after Nicolas Vauquelin, one of their associates who had refined the technique of ether extraction for use in isolating alkaloids. However, the officers of the Académe des Sciences in Paris rejected the idea on the grounds that a respected scientist’s name should not be paired with a deadly poison. In addition to strychnine the pair isolated other important compounds from plants including caffeine, chlorophyll and the anti-malaria drug quinine. (Paul L. Burnham).Parkinson:""Breakthroughs"", 1818 C. - Garrison & Morton: 1846.The first issue also contains their importent memoir ""Examen chimique de la Cochenillee et de sa matière colorante"", pp. 250-287 which describes how they obtained crotonic acid from croton oil and analyzed carmine in the cochineal.‎

‎First printing of the paper in which Peltier describes his discovery of the ""Peltier-Effect"", the thermo-electric cooling and heating of an electrical junction dependent on the direction of the current.""Stimulated by the work of Nobili, Peltier constructed a sensitive galvanometer to measure the conductivities of antimony and bismuth for small currents. Peltier's use of small samples of these nonductile materials was fortunate because the anomalous behavior of these materials led him to construct a thermoelectric thermoscope and to measure the temperature distribution along a series of thermocouple circuits. He discovered that a cooling effect can take place at one junction and an excessive heating at the other. He then confirmed this discovery by using an air thermometer in place of the thermoscope. Peltier did not pursue the effect he had discovered, and its importence was not fully recognized until after the thermodynamic work of William Thomson twenty years later.""(DSB X, p. 500).Wheeler Gift no 2684. - Ronald's Library, p. 389. - Parkinson ""Breakthroughs"" 1834 P.‎

‎First appearance of the statistical paper in which the authors introduced the conceptS of 'Multiple Correlation' and 'Partial Correlation'. ""Pearson did not pursue the theory of multiple and partial correlation beyond the point to which he had carried it in his basic memoir on correlation (1896). The general theory of multiple and partial correlation and regression was developed by his mathematical assistant, G. Udny Yule, in two papers published in 1897. Yule was the first to give mathematical expressions for what are now called partial correlation coefficients, whcih he termed ""net correlation coefficients."" What Pearson had called coefficients of double regression, Yule renamed net regressions"" they are now called partial regression coefficients. The expressions ""multiple correlation"" and ""partial correlation"" stem from the paper written Alice Lee and read to the Royal Society in 1897.""(DSB).‎
